WELCOME

Welcome to the second day of our Easter Festival

It was a great day yesterday and today looks equally as good.

Welcome to the Easter Monday, we are excited to see you all on what is set to be a tremendous day and we do hope you had an enjoyable Easter Sunday.

Today we have 61 runners going to post over 7 races with £115,299 of prize-money on offer. Our feature on the track today is the £50,000 BetGoodwin Champion Chase where 7 closely matched runners head to post for what looks a fantastic renewal of one of the season’s features. Last year this race was won by Tamaroc Du Mathan, owned by the de la Hey’s, trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Lorcan Williams, who defeated Mercian Prince and Mahler’s Promise in a thrilling finish and this year we hope for something similar. Both War Lord and Lord Baddesley, have won previously at Plumpton, with the latter already winning this year, and between the 7 horses, they have accumulated total earnings of over £600,000. It is set to be a great tussle.

BetGoodwin have been a great partner this season at Plumpton, sponsoring on a variety of days and sponsors the £50,000 Sussex Champion Chase and so we thank them for the support. Similarly, Extech, Howden, Gillian Todd and Jane Ashford, Peter Savill and family, Sam Chouhan and family and Strong Flavours (our catering Partners), are a big part of the day too and so we hope they and their guests have a great time.

Our Retired Racehorse Stable continues to be very popular and today we are lucky to have Ding Ding. Ding Ding ran an amazing 34 times at Plumpton, winning 6 races between the years of 2016 – 2019. Pop down and give her a polo and a pat.

It is a busy day, and both of our enclosures are open, with all of our Family Entertainment located in the Centre Course so all ticket types have access to these rides and features. We have a map detailing all our activities in the centre pages of the racecard so please take a look. There is plenty going on for all the family besides the 7 fantastic races on course and so all fingers point towards an exciting day.

Looking ahead, we still have two further racedays, Sussex Day, 23rd April as well as our Season Finale, Ladies Day on 14th May. General admission tickets start from £15 with hospitality starting from £75 and can be booked or enquired by visiting www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk

We hope you enjoy the last day of the mini-Easter holiday and choose some winners!

Best wishes

CUSTOMER INFORMATION

Horse Care at Plumpton

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:

Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

On-Course Bookmakers at Plumpton – Late Pay Service

If you need to claim winnings from an on-course bookmaker after a raceday, please send your ticket and covering letter to the following address:

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suffi cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confi rmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefi xed by the letter h.

brighton mini-bus

Racegoers are advised that Plumpton Racecourse operates a return mini-bus service from Brighton Train Station on feature and Bank Holiday racedays. The silver, Chariots mini-bus will depart from the designated Coach parking area at the rear of Brighton Station 1½ hours before the scheduled off time of the first race. The return service will depart from the racecourse rear public car park half an hour after the last race. As space is limited, and to avoid disappointment, we recommend that tickets are purchased in advance from our website. Return Fare: £10

BETTING INFORMATION

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

1. Pick your winner!

Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. Where to place your bet

– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3. Place your bet

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;

(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;

(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;

(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;

(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;

(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and

(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Chris Gordon won the Harry And Betty Savill Memorial Novices’ Handicap Hurdle 12 months ago with Sami Bear and he saddles Invictus De Brion in this year’s renewal at 3.33.

COPSHILL LAD has shown some ability in this discipline and may improve for today’s slight drop in trip. He sets the standard on the official ratings and may be able to put his previous experience to good use. Honneur De Sivola is entitled to be wiser after his debut under Rules at Market Rasen last month, while Bar Thyme is a half-brother to a couple of winners over timber and is worth noting in the betting.

WIN: COPSHILL LAD;

DANGER: Honneur De Sivola

With just two previous chase starts to his name, NOAHTHIRTYTWORED is open to progression and looks worth following having made a winning start at Newton Abbot last September before posting a respectable effort at Cheltenham the following month. By contrast, Rose Sea Has is a more wily character and is highly respected given he has experience of these obstacles. Glajou is also considered given that a recent outing should have blown the cobwebs away.

WIN: NOAHTHIRTYTWORED;

DANGER: Rose Sea

BIG JIMBO has been in good form on the all-weather since the turn of the year and the versatile gelding could be hard to peg back now he reverts to hurdles. He’s shown ability in four previous starts in this discipline and offers strong appeal. Hunting Brook is unexposed and could have more to offer, while Invictus De Brion has previous course experience and is another to bear in mind. Ohnodonttakemehome completes the shortlist.

WIN: BIG JIMBO;

DANGER: Hunting Brook

BLACK GERRY returned to form with a comfortable success at Ascot last Sunday when benefiting from a drop back in trip, having been pulled up at Kempton over 3m the time before. He carries a 7lb penalty on this occasion and it would be no surprise to see him back up that recent victory. Flic Ou Voyou just held on at Wincanton on his latest outing and is likely to enter calculations along with War Lord, who should find this easier than the Plate at Cheltenham Festival.

WIN: BLACK GERRY;

DANGER: Flic Ou Voyou

FLEMEN’S TIPPLE produced his best effort to date when runner-up over C&D last month and this appears to be an excellent chance for him to go one better, especially with the handicapper not changing his mark. One For The Wall also finished second here when last seen in February and the seven-year-old is expected to uphold that form against the fourth, Hilltown, who may have more to offer on his second start over this distance.

WIN: FLEMEN’S TIPPLE;

DANGER: One For The Wall

River Tyne filled the runner-up berth for a fourth-consecutive time when finishing second at Exeter recently and a 4lb rise in the ratings will only make life tougher for Nick Gifford’s mare. With that in mind, it may pay to take a chance on DELGANY MONARCH, who arrives in good heart and found only a progressive rival too good over C&D last month. Who Is That and My Bad Lucy also warrant consideration.

WIN: DELGANY MONARCH;

DANGER: River Tyne

HIGHWAY ONE O FIVE made an encouraging start to his racing career when weakening late on into third in a bumper at Kempton in February and, with the runner-up subsequently bolting up at Wetherby on Thursday, compensation could await Chris Gordon’s charge today. 3m pointto-point winner Carrigmoorna Rowan likely found the extended 2m at Exeter on the sharp side and Harry Fry’s charge is feared most now faced with a stiffer test, while Ikalimix and Country Lady are also open to improvement.

WIN: HIGHWAY ONE O FIVE;

Arthur Ashford was a successful and well loved local vet but his true passion lay in racing. He was an owner and breeder and enjoyed his racing here at Plumpton.

Arthur owned and bred Carly Bay who frequently raced here, winning three times, twice over hurdles and once over fences.

Arthur also owned and bred several other horses that raced here including Polly Major, Polly Minor and Bonnie Major. His horses were trained by Gerry Enright with whom Arthur had a great rapport.

Arthur’s daughters Jane and Gilly are here today to celebrate their father’s racing life in this special way

PLAY SMARTER

OHNODONTTAKEMEHOME seemed to gradually get the hang of hurdling in his qualifying runs and has a lenient mark based on bumper ability so he’s the suggestion. Big Jimbo arrives in form from AW Flat and rates an obvious danger back hurdling for the Gary Moore team. Hunting Brook is another who could take a step forward now handicapping for the first time in this sphere and also makes the shortlist.
