WELCOME

Merry Christmas & welcome to our final raceday of 2022.

It feels like such a long road to have gotten here, but if you are reading this then it must have been one worth travelling down! Not only have we not raced since 14th November, losing a really good fixture on the 12th after getting the frost covers over the entire track was galling, but the operation to get them up was a really tough one as with the snow settling on top and it makes them incredibly heavy. Then we’ve had to wait for the frost & snow to thaw and then move the rail to deal with the rain – we really do have to doff our caps to Marcus and the groundstaff team for this one. However, it is Christmas and we should celebrate accordingly! There’s mince pies and mulled wine for the first 300 through the door as well as Christmas hats all around, music all day in the Paddock Bar, plenty of Christmas decorations and we are hoping to see plenty of Christmas attire. It feels like it has been a long year and I hope people can have some enjoyment with us with friends, colleagues and fellow racing enthusiast’s today.

Speaking of racing enthusiasts, it is great to welcome back some of our sponsors today who we have had great relationships with for many years including Gary White and his team, The Hunnisett Family, Crystal Cleaning Services & the Corrigan Family, Strong Flavours Catering and Michael O’Shea and Family who owned Theo’s Charm who won at Plumpton twice before tackling some loftier heights in higher rated races. We thank you for your continued support and hope you have fantastic days.

Moving swiftly to other fantastic days, it would be great to see you back here at Plumpton on Monday 2nd January (Bank Holiday) for one of our biggest days of the year – our Sussex National Raceday. Surely there are few better ways to start the year? Or so we think here anyway!

But for now, have a fantastic day with us and an even better Christmas with your families and friends. Here’s to a superb 2023 and lets hope we see you here a few times during it!

Best Wishes, Dan

Horse Care at Plumpton

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted. On-Course Bookmakers at Plumpton – Late

BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suffi cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confi rmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefi xed by the letter h.

BETTING INFORMATION

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

1. Pick your winner!

Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. Where to place your bet

– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3. Place your bet

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

– Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

– Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; (b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; (c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; (d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; (e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; (f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and (g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

LAST MEETING REVIEW

Brief Times ran home a comfortable winner of our opener under Sam TwistonDavies. The David Bridgewater trained Dom Of Mary was giving gallant chase when falling two out and he will be entitled to come on for that run after a long layoff.

Our second race saw Nick Gifford spring a bit of a surprise with Northern Poet. James Davies opted to keep the seven-year-old prominent throughout the race and emerged from the chasing pack turning for home. He would need every yard of the extended two-mile four-furlong trip but ran down the front running Tea And Chats on the run to the line.

When Charles Byrnes sends one over from his base in Limerick, they rarely go unnoticed and Wajaaha was no different. Ridden by 5lb claimer Philip Byrnes, he ran home the uncontested leader to win by 10 lengths. It was a nice performance from a horse with some very nice hurdle form already in the book.

Tap Tap Boom fairly scooted away from his rivals in our fourth race. Jay Tidball opted to hold the Alastair Ralph trained eight-year-old at the rear but made steady progress down the back straight to take up the running turning for home. The first time tongue tie clearly had the desired effect and he has since won again on his next start.

Baddesley made it third time lucky at Plumpton after a second and sixth placed efforts next to his name at the track. He looked to appreciate the drop back in trip and the better ground almost certainly played to his strengths.

Out penultimate race of the day went to Blade Runner, who picked up nicely to run away from his opponents coming down to the last. He stayed on strongly under Tom Cannon to give Chris Gordon a quick-fire double on the day. The first-time visor clearly helped and he may prove even better next time out if improving his jumping.

Our finale presented an almighty shock as 100/1 shot El Hageb Rose rallied strongly to win by just over two lengths. It was a fine training performance by Paddy Butler as El Hageb Rose clearly isn’t the most straight forward of horses.

The Neil Mulholland-trained Brief Times made all in the feature contest under Sam Twiston-Davies.

Paul Nicholls boasts an impressive 47% strike-rate (+£13.86 level stakes profit) with his hurdle runners at this venue over the last five seasons. The Ditcheat handler saddles Killaloan (2.00) over the smaller obstacles this afternoon.

In this fascinating contest it may pay dividends to side with OUR CHAMP, who has shown plenty of promise on his two outings over hurdles and rates a big player with improvement forthcoming. Peace Of Rome is another to consider for a powerful stable as he shaped encouragingly in bumpers and is likely to have been well schooled ahead of his hurdles bow. Tea And Chats is also of interest.

WIN: OUR CHAMP; DANGER: Peace Of Rome

Despite failing to justify favouritism at Huntingdon last time, it would be no surprise to see ART OF ILLUSION bounce back off 1lb lower. The Warren Greatrex-trained gelding remains unexposed over fences and he may relish this step back in trip. Old Painless cost 50,000 pounds last year and may be able to take a step forward after a respectable effort over hurdles at Market Rasen on his latest outing, while Stanley Pincombe completes the shortlist.

WIN: ART OF ILLUSION; DANGER: Old Painless

WILL VICTORY emphatically dismissed her rivals at Sedgefield last time, putting seven lengths between herself and her next best rival. Despite making a mistake at the final obstacle, the Harry Fry-trained mare comfortably got the better of her opponents and can continue her ascendancy off 9lb higher. Sashenka gave a good account to finish second when last seen over hurdles and warrants interest, while Midnight Mary is another to consider.

WIN: WILL VICTORY; DANGER: Sashenka

Ebonello landed a mares’ contest at Wincanton last month and, with improvement likely, she ranks amongst the leading contenders here. However, preference is for GETAWAY DRUMLEE. Ben Pauling’s charge struggled in Graded company last time, but he won well at Hereford on his penultimate outing and rates the one to beat under a penalty. Diamond Egg landed a bumper at Huntingdon in May and is an interesting contender on his first start over timber.

WIN: GETAWAY DRUMLEE; DANGER: Ebonello

BADDESLEY was a comfortable winner over C&D last month and, raised just 4lb in the handicap, Chris Gordon’s charge could repeat the dose. Northern Poet defied a 624-day absence to score here last time and a similar performance would bring the son of Yeats firmly into the reckoning, along with recent Hereford scorer Zestful Hope. Le Patron struck over hurdles when trained in France and he’s an interesting recruit to the Gary Moore team.

WIN: BADDESLEY; DANGER: Northern Poet

Local trainer Gary Moore won this race in 2013 and 2020 and will hope to strike again with OZZIE MAN. He has won both chase starts to date and a further 6lb rise might not be enough to anchor him. Poldark Cross, who was in the process of running a decent race when falling two out at Ffos Las, heads the list of dangers from Enormouse, who is unexposed over fences.

WIN: OZZIE MAN; DANGER: Poldark Cross

He Knows Better ran a promising race when coming home third last month at Chepstow and if he can build on that then he may well get involved in the finish. Batwomen caught the eye when third in a Ballingarry point-to-point in May and could be a useful recruit, along with CAPTAIN TEAGUE, an easy eight-length winner at Knockanard in February and all set to go well on his first start for Paul Nicholls.

WIN: CAPTAIN TEAGUE; DANGER: He Knows Better

Hurdles debutante Fortuna Ligna rates the danger, along with Filanderer. Peace of Rome also commands a second look. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: DISTANCE

It was encouraging to see POLDARK CROSS travel so well throughout the race on his reappearance at Ffos Las where he held every chance when falling at the second-last. His jumping was otherwise on point that day and he could be the answer, provided the first-time visor has the desired effect. Ozzie Man is 2-2 over fences and has to be feared given that he remains open to improvement.
