44 Plumpton Racecourse would like to thank SUMMERTREE VALDA EMBIRICOS & FAMILY THE ALDANITI PARTNERSHIP MR IAN HUMPHRIES & FAMILY
Welcome to our annual Bob Champion Cancer Trust Raceday!
It’s been a month since our first fixture of the season, although it feels like 5 minutes to us at the track as the time has flown by! The season started in great fashion on September 18th with the ground riding beautifully despite the very dry summer and over 3,000 people joining us and seemingly having a great time. Since then we’ve had 69mm of rain as well as applying plenty of irrigation and so our going today is largely Good with some Good to Soft in the Hurdle course. Please also keep your eye on the two road crossings across the track we’ve replaced these between the first two fixtures with a waxed eco surface, which should be a great improvement for all runners.
Its superb to welcome back Bob, Lucy and all the committee for the annual Charity Day at Plumpton. It takes a huge amount of effort to put these events on and the time, effort and commitment of the team is testament to its success which was notable with around £75k being raised last year which is a cracking effort. However, we aren’t ones to rest on our laurels and we want to do more this year for such a worthy cause (and if you read the Aldaniti page and various Bob Champion adverts in this card, you’ll see some of the amazing things this Charity does) and so make sure you come along and have a look at the silent auction prizes and buy some raffle tickets. Any donation or bid helps and there are some fantastic prizes to have a look at (which are all shown on the middle pages of this racecard).
We must also pass on our sincere thanks to The Humphries Family, Valda Embiricos & The Embiricos Family, Mike Roberts & Summertree Stud, Southern Cranes & Access Ltd, Mrs Vicki Morgan, SIS & Recycled Products Ltd who very kindly support us through sponsorship and more importantly the Charity on such an important fund raising day.
With Chepstow now having been and gone, Cheltenham entries rolling in and those mornings turning markedly colder (we have had a leaf frost already!) it certainly feels like the National Hunt season is ready to take off. Our next fixture on the 31st October has a preview with Colin Brown before racing in Chasers Bar (Lewes Stand) and we have a £26k Handicap Hurdle to really whet the appetite for the season ahead too. We hope you’ll join us for the thrills and spills to come along the way. The world feels a bit fraught at the moment and we hope days with us can be some respite in all of the turmoil.
But for now to today, have an enjoyable day and let’s hope it’s a great days racing and do remember to donate to the Bob Champion Cancer Trust!

INFORMATION
Horse Care at Plumpton
At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.
During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.
The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
Use of Screens
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB
Unauthorised Bookmaking
It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Official BHA Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suffi cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confi rmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefi xed by the letter h.
brighton mini-bus train times

The return service will depart from the racecourse rear public car park half an hour after the last race. As space is limited, and to avoid disappointment, we recommend that tickets are purchased in advance from our website. Return Fare: £10

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.
1. Pick your winner!
Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
2. Where to place your bet
In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.
3. Place your bet
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:
Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings
Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.
PLACE TERMS
All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:
(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners all to win;
(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners 1/5 odds on place 1-2;
(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds on place 1-2; (d) for races with 8 or more runners 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; (e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; (f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and (g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.
WHAT IS RULE 4?
Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.
If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.
The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

LAST MEETING REVIEW
See The Sea pings the last to win the feature handicap hurdle, making the near 500 mile trip worth it!
The first of the seven race card at our last meeting saw three maidens take to the start of the 2m1f Maiden Hurdle race. Favourite Lusaka came from behind but made a mistake two from home. It is doubtful that it cost him the race because the winner, Mordred, made all from the get go and kept on strongly in the final stages.
Race two saw Special Buddy make all and get challenged by Agent Saonois until two out, and despite jumping right and losing a length or two from this he stayed on to take the victory.
Mr Freedom was held up until Marc Goldstein gave him the nudge and he made headway three out to come to the front. The gelding kept on well and Executive Pool, who finished second, seemed to be no match for him.
Sea The Sea rallied on to finish a length in front of Glimpse Of Gold who chased the leaders but despite his best efforts didn’t quite get there in the closing stages.
The next race caused a stir when the leader Trumps Benefit fell three fences out leaving Only Money clear to take the race providing Chris Gordan and Tom Cannon the first leg of their double.
Claiming jockey Lily Pinchin enjoyed success aboard Boomtime Banker who was prominent and led from two out. The pair kept on well and rallied to come home just short of two lengths in front of Cherry Cola.
The second leg of the Canon/ Gordan double came when landing the Open National Hunt Flat race. The eventual winner, Invictus De Brion, tracked Dannystory until the final 2 furlongs when he went into the lead. Alien Storm was on his heals when he made headway over 3 furlongs out but was outpaced and the favourite finished a length and a half be hind the winner.

KILFILUM WOODS was far from disgraced when second behind this year's Persian War runner-up Outlaw Peter at Kempton in May, and he's arguably the one to beat on that form. Alien Storm and Our Champ displayed a fair level ability in bumpers, however, and they could provide a stern challenge on their respective hurdling bows. Rewired struck over timber at Fakenham in March, has gone well fresh in the past and can't be ruled out on his seasonal reappearance.
WIN: KILFILUM WOODS; DANGER: Alien Storm
Who Is That took a step forward when making a successful reappearance at Fontwell earlier this month and he ought to remain competitive from 2lb higher, but prefer ence is for AGENT SAONOIS. Neil Mulholland's six-year-old finished a good second over C&D on his chasing bow and he looks sure to improve for that experience. Ozzie Man has not been sighted for the thick end of a year, but is dangerous to rule out for a stable that have been among the winners in recent days.
WIN: AGENT SAONOIS; DANGER: Who Is That
Well found in the market on each of his qualifying runs, HILL STATION makes plenty of appeal on his handicap debut and he's fancied to take a step forward for the Gary Moore team. Mordred arrives in search of a hat-trick having scored over fences at Sedgefield last month and he demands the utmost respect along with Martin Spirit, who ought to go close if building on his latest Fontwell second. Cornicello shouldn't be underestimated either.
WIN: HILL STATION; DANGER: Mordred
Chris Gordon and Tom Cannon do particularly well here and with the yard in good form, it may be best to side with PASVOLSKY. Lightly raced over fences, he won over C&D in December last year and is beginning to look well-handicapped. I See You Well has scored here five times and is hard to overlook, though he seems better over further. Al Roc is also noted now down in distance.
WIN: PASVOLSKY; DANGER: I See You Well
The Moore family rarely leave here without a winner and that points to the chances of MARK OF GOLD, who has won two of his four starts at Plumpton and may have even more to come as a five-year-old. He might be able to see off the interesting Overpriced Mixer, who returns from a wind operation following 18 months off and may have more to offer for a stable who don't send horses here that often. Glimpse Of Gold could prove best of the rest.
WIN: MARK OF GOLD; DANGER: Overpriced Mixer
If BLADE RUNNER is ready to roll after six months off the track then he could prove hard to beat having won both of his C&D starts over fences, the latest by 14 lengths in April. He shares top-weight here, but there is every chance there is a lot more to come from him. Art Of Illusion could be his biggest rival under Harry Bannister who rides this track as well as anyone, while Artemision is one to watch after moving to the Emma Lavelle stable.
WIN: BLADE RUNNER; DANGER: Art Of Illusion
MILANESE ROSE is unexposed at this trip and can be expected to be sharper after her seasonal return at Uttoxeter last month. Hana Collonges was badly hampered by a loose horse in that race and might get closer to the selection this now she's tried in cheekpieces. Makety completes the shorlist.
WIN: MILANESE ROSE; DANGER: Hana Collonges

AGENT SAONOIS showed enough on his chase debut here to suggest that he’s up to winning a race such as this off the same mark. He gets the nod ahead of Ozzie Man, who can be expected to step up on what he showed over hurdles now tackling the larger obstacles. There were positives to glean form CORNICELLO’s reappearance effort at Warwick and, entitled to come on for that, he’s appealing off a reduced mark returned to handicap company. The 3-y-o Hill Station has to be feared given his weight-for-age allowance and he is second choice ahead of the hat-trick seeking Mordred and Encashment.

ACCESSIBILITY AT PLUMPTON RACECOURSE
Plumpton Racecourse’s facilities provide an accessible environment for all our racegoers, including those with young children. We are happy to make alternative arrangements if necessary; if you have any queries or require assistance please phone 01273 890383, visit the Racecourse Office or ask any member of staff and we will be happy to assist you in any way we can.

ALDANITI
4... my Dad’s lucky number. At 4pm on the 4th day of the 4th month, in the 4th race carrying the saddle cloth number 4 ALDANITI and Bob Champion won the Grand National. The year was 1981, and to this day is one of the biggest fairytales in horse racing.
ALDANITI had injured his tendon early on in his career, then fractured his hock when placed 3rd in the Hennessey Gold Cup. Later on after coming 3rd in the Cheltenham Gold cup and 2nd in the Scottish National, he broke down so badly at Sandown the vet said he should be put to sleep. Mum and Dad had other ideas and said It was “absolutely out of the question” and Niti came home to Barkfold to begin his rehab.
Meanwhile, Bob was overcoming his greatest battle, to win his fight over testicular cancer. Both horse and jockey were on a long journey to win the world’s greatest horse race, a dream that Bob had had since the very first time he rode Niti in a race.
In the February of 1981 both horse and jockey made a winning return to the racecourse at Ascot in the Whitbread Trial beating Anaglogues Daughter.
Then, finally the day came, both the battle hardened warriors stepped onto the famous turf at Aintree and galloped and jumped and jumped and galloped all the way up the long run in to win a victory that resulted in the birth of The Bob Champion Cancer Trust.
This has raised over £16 million and has made leaps and bounds into research, for testing, treating and returning men back to full health. So this 4th day of the 4th month I am remembering and looking to the future for everyone with great determination and love.

In 2000 in conjunction with the Institute of Cancer Research, the Trust opened the Bob Champion Cancer Research Laboratories in Surrey, creating the first male dedicated research centre in Europe. The Trust’s second facility, the Bob Champion Research and Educational Building, was opened in February 2015 within the campus of the University of East Anglia It is within these facilities that their current research projects take place on prostate cancer. In the UK it has been estimated that one in every 9 men will develop prostate cancer The incidence of this disease is also increasing and, within the next decade, is set to overtake colon cancer and even lung cancer to become the most common cancer in men Prostate cancer, therefore, represents a major national health problem.
