WELCOME

Best Wishes, Dan

Dan Thompson Chief Executive

To honour her life we will be holding a 2 minute silence at 1.35pm, 15 minutes before the first race and so we ask everyone to please respect those moments. We will announce this over the Public Address system to give everyone warning and timings. As you are reading this you’ll have seen that we are also making her Majesty the front cover of the racecard, our raceday staff will be wearing black ties/neckerchiefs where possible and we will have a couple of condolence books around site for people to sign and we will be sending these to the Royal Family after the day.

Welcome back to Plumpton for the start of the 2022/23 Season!

Although it is incredibly sad to have lost the Queen, we very much hope you’ll be able to enjoy a fantastic return to Plumpton where we have a lot going on for you. Aside from the 7 great races on offer, we have lots of entertainment in the centre course including a dog competition, petting zoo, horse hoppers, magician, face painter and some inflatables including an assault course and a toddler play zone!

Which goes for us all Thank you for joining us and here’s to a great 2022/23 season.

4

However, we can only start in one place and that is with Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her very sad passing just over a week ago. While she was revered by much of the country, she had particular affection amongst racing fans as her love of the sport was regularly demonstrated. I genuinely hope it is true that the first dates that went into her engagement diary each year were the Derby and Royal Ascot! When Ryan Moore tipped his cap to the Queen at Royal Ascot in 2013 after riding the Queen’s horse Estimate to victory in the Ascot Gold Cup (one of the biggest races in the flat racing calendar) her beaming reaction was as pure and the most iconic sporting moment as you can get. Racing alongside the country will miss her greatly.

We’ve also made some changes over the summer and so you’ll see the one-pad fitted hurdles on course today ready to be jumped by the hurdlers and there is white vinyl (research shows these are better seen by the horses) on both the hurdles and fences too (which used to be orange). We’ve re-furbished the Paddock Bar and Lewes Stand toilets and there is some new walkways for the horses near the unloading bay and from the stables too.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suffi cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confi rmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefi xed by the letter h.

BETTING INFORMATION

Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

1. Pick your winner!

In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

3. Place your bet

Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

WHAT IS RULE 4?

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners all to win; (b) for races with 3 or 4 runners 1/5 odds on place 1-2; (c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds on place 1-2; (d) for races with 8 or more runners 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; (e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; (f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and (g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

MERRIJIG was nibbled at in the betting before finishing a narrow runner-up on his debut at Newton Abbot in July and the fact that both the first and third-placed horses have each won since bodes well for his chance of going one better here. Invictus De Brion showed similar promise when a runner-up at Southwell first time out and is likely to prove most troublesome, ahead of Alien Storm.

WIN: EASKEY LAD

DANGER: SEIGNEUR DES AS RACE

DANGER:

WIN: COAL STOCK

THIBAULT goes over timber once again after a few efforts on the Flat and a reproduction of the form of his latest hurdles effort, when a seven-length winner here over further in May, would see him take a fair amount of beating in this contest. Sergeant is respected after his win at Stratford and a 4lb rise doesn’t appear out of his reach, while Just The Man completes the shortlist having been consistent in this sphere earlier in the year.

DID YOU KNOW

Heronord is bound to be popular here, having finished runner-up on two of his last three outings, but he remains a maiden through 18 starts under Rules and preference instead is for EASKEY LAD. The son of Most Improved didn’t shape without promise on his chasing bow when fourth at Worcester last month and the form of that race has worked out well in the interim. Arbennig and Special Buddy are capable of being in the mix.

RACE 6

Despite there being just five runners, this is a competitive contest and the nod goes to COAL STOCK. Syd Hosie’s seven-year-old has been knocking on the door off this mark of 120 and this looks like a decent opportunity for him to get his head in front. Barest Of Margins runs off the same mark as his second over the extended 2m1f at Bangor last time but more is needed to score here, while Only Money shouldn’t be too far away.

DANGER: BAREST OF MARGINS

WIN: CADEAU D’OR

RACE

RACE 5

WIN: FREEDOM EXECUTIVE POOL 3

WIN: LUSAKA

Sheena West won the Jon & Pandora Wedding Week Juvenile Hurdle in 2018 and 2019 and the local handler saddles Mr Freedom in this year’s renewal at 2.50.

WIN: THIBAULT

MR FREEDOM showed significant improvement from first to second start when comfortably seeing off his rivals at Fontwell and he can overcome a 7lb penalty for his in-form connections here. Executive Pool has plenty of ground to find with the selection on that run and the more pressing threat may come from hurdling debutant Borntobealeader, who was a convincing winner on the level at Goodwood last month. Similar comments apply to Major Gatsby, who has been prolific on the Flat this year.

DANGER: BOOMTIME BANKER

WIN: MERRIJIG

DANGER: INVICTUS DE BRION

DANGER: HERONORD 2

MR

Narrowly denied at Fontwell last month, LUSAKA has been a steady improver since joining Olly Murphy and this looks to be an ideal opportunity to get off the mark over hurdles. 11lb clear of him on ratings is French recruit Seigneur Des As, who must be respected on his first run for the in-form Milton Harris team. Indigo Lake is another to note, despite being lightly campaigned over the past couple of years.

DANGER: SERGEANT RACE 4

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

This is perhaps a good opportunity CADEAU D’OR to get off the mark over hurdles at the fifth attempt following an improved post-wind surgery effort in a first-time tongue-tie at Newton Abbot last month. Boomtime Banker produced a much improved performance to land a gamble last time and is also of interest, as is Dante’s View, who won well at Fontwell when last seen, albeit a year ago.

An avid cricketer, huge Sunderland FC supporter as well as a fan of a pint or two - any reference to these pursuits in today’s runners will be heavily backed by his friends! Norman Sharpe died suddenly on the 6th July 2015. He was 54 years old. 2022 represents the fourth year that Norman’s friends and family have gathered at Plumpton racecourse to remember some really good times and enjoy a day that he would have just loved.

accountant, before finding his true career in sales within the building industry. Over some 30 years, he enjoyed extended times with both Taylor-Wimpey and Persimmon. Whether it was at work or at play, Norman was always at his best engaging with people.

Norman loved horse racing. He regularly attended Plumpton in his late teens before he moved to London. At that point, Ascot, Sandown, Kempton and Epsom became his racecourses of choice. In the years since 1984, he attended the Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp some 27 times. He did that because he loved horse racing but he also did it because he loved going horse racing with his friends.

For those of you reading this who didn’t know him, Norman was great company and if he was out for the day or night you wanted to be part of it. He was immensely generous, very loyal and had a wonderful sense of humour

Norman was a very good friend, and we miss him greatly.

Friends and Family of Norman Sharpe

Norman moved back to Partridge Green in Sussex in the early 1990s, where he lived happily with his wife and three daughters, until his untimely passing. So, why do we feel that Plumpton is the place for approaching 50 of Norman’s friends and family to get together and to sponsor a race in his name?

Norman studied at Kingston Polytechnic and then lived in South-West London for a few years after completing his degree. He worked in London, initially as an

N O R M A N SH AR PE

Norman may have been Scottish by birth, but he was also very much a man of Sussex indeed, his parents still live in Cuckfield. He was brought up in Haywards Heath, attending the local Grammar School. He represented the county and south of England at rugby, also playing regularly for Felbridge Juniors and London Scottish before an injury prevented further potential progression.

Norman (or Norm to many of his friends) was born in Edinburgh in 1961. He was a proud Scotsman and a very keen sportsman. The combination of being a Hibs supporter and a Scotsman meant the victory celebrations were few and far between but the (many) near misses were, strangely, still enjoyed.

Norman also played football for the local team, Franklands Village. Whilst he loved to play football with his mates, his ball playing talents were somewhat limited and he achieved much more success as a manager

BOOMTIME BANKER had something to spare when landing a gamble at Worcester a couple of months ago and she’s still on a very lowly mark, so a follow up seems likely if she’s strong in the betting. Dante’s View is an obvious danger if he’s ready to go back from a year off the track, while Cadeau d’Or looks interesting with few miles on the clock. I X T H RA CE
