WELCOME Welcome to The Racehorse Sanctuary Raceday Our fifth fixture of the season and I would like to welcome you to The BetGoodwin Christmas Raceday. It’s December and it’s really starting to ‘feel a bit like Christmas’ so I wish you all an enjoyable day. We have already had a great start to the season welcoming many thousands of people and seeing some fantastic horses and close finishes. We are sure today will be equally as exciting and I thank you for your continued support. I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support for the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Weatherbys and Michael O’Shea. We wish you all have a tremendous day. We have a cracking 7 race card today, with 59 runners declared worth over £90,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track is our fifth race the £27,000 Class 3 weatherbysshop.co.uk Mares Handicap Hurdle Race run over 2m 4f. The renewal this year looks strong with 8 going to post. We also have the £15,000 BetGoodwin Supports UK Racing Novices’ Handicap Steeple Chase and £13,500 BetGoodwin Handicap Steeple Chase to really whet the appetite. Since the last raceday I have some tremendous news to celebrate with you as the Groundstaff Team of Craig French, Ross Craig, Mac Cornford and Lewis Edmond led by Marcus Waters, Clerk Of The Course won the coveted prize of being named the best Groundstaff Team across all British Racecourses by the RCA. This is a fantastic and amazing reward for all their hard work and dedication, and I am sure you will congratulate them on this success. Today we have Baron Alco, nickname ‘Barry’ in our Retired Racehorse Stable. He is our Retraining Of Racehorses (ROR) ‘Horses for Courses’ and we are delighted to welcome him to Plumpton. During his career he won a pair of Cheltenham bonus series races in the 2016/17 season for owner John Stone and defeated Frodon in the BetVictor Gold Cup. Make sure you pop over and give him a polo and a pat. Our next fixture, Festive Fun Raceday, 18th December will be our final raceday before Christmas, so we hope to see many of you back here then. It is always such a great atmosphere both on and off the track, with the Christmas jumpers, live music, hot chestnuts, free candy cain for everyone and competitive racing. This year we will also be singing Christmas carols in and around the Parade Ring after racing so make sure you put this into your diary. Our first raceday of 2024 will be our new Premier Raceday featuring not only the Sussex National won last year by Atakan but also three new races headlined with the Sussex Stayers Hurdle worth £75,000. This day will have a total prize fund of £195,000, an amazing £90,000 more than last year. This is a day that is always high in demand, so if you are thinking of booking admission tickets or hospitality make sure you book now. Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community. Best wishes Craig Staddon Chief Executive

CUSTOMER INFORMATION Horse Care at Plumpton At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. BETTING INFORMATION A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling. 1.

Pick your winner! There are many ways that you can pick your selection: - Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. - Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. - Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2.

Where to place your bet – In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. – With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. – At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3.

Place your bet Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet: – Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off . – Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings – Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g)

for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4? Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price. If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner. The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA rating

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE 1

BOB BOB RICARD confirmed promise shown in bumpers when a pleasing second on his hurdling/seasonal debut at Wetherby in October and, with improvement likely, he is fancied to get off the mark. Hurricane Danny left his comeback run well behind when runner-up at Chepstow 10 days ago and there should be plenty more to come from him, while Bentley’s Return can also make the frame. SELECTION - Bob Bob Ricard toteeachway: Hurricane Danny

RACE 2

SCENE ONE justified strong market support when making a winning debut over fences at Fakenham three weeks ago and a 3lb rise for that effort is deemed lenient. The seven-yearold remains open to plenty of further improvement and he makes slightly more appeal than Heros, who also struck on his chasing bow at Taunton last month. The consistent Aviles is unlikely to be far away either. SELECTION - Scene One toteeachway: Heros

RACE 3

CLASSIC LORD’s Ludlow third is strong form and he built on that when a 14-length winner at Fontwell subsequently. The Tim Vaughan-trained five-year-old is seemingly learning all the time and he looks capable of defying a penalty. Onewayortother wasn’t disgraced behind the exciting Willmount at Newbury last month and he demands respect. Goodwin, Avada Kedavra and Pyrotechnic add further spice to the race. SELECTION - Classic Lord toteeachway: Onewayortother

RACE 4

MIDNIGHT MARY posted a solid third on her reappearance over C&D last month and any improvement, racing off the same mark, could result in the seven-year-old landing the spoils. Gold Clermont wasn’t disgraced when making the frame over hurdles at Lingfield and she warrants respect as a dual track-and-trip winner. Tip Top Mountain could also have a say on his return to a class 4 contest. SELECTION - Midnight Mary toteeachway: Gold Clermont

RACE 5

A first-time tongue-tie appeared to work it’s magic for THE HEIGHT OF FAME, who ran out a comfortable winner at Wincanton in October. A 7lb rise for Keiran Burke’s mare doesn’t look insurmountable and a brace could be in the offing. Ilovethenightlife, who picked up Grade 2 honours at Newbury back in the spring, performed too badly to be true when pulling up on her seasonal debut at Wincanton and she’s feared most if near her best, ahead of A Tickatickatiming. SELECTION - The Height Of Fame toteeachway: Ilovethenightlife

RACE 6

BALTRAY improved from his first to second jumping start when an easy winner at Hereford, and the step up in trip can help him progress further as he makes his handicap debut off a workable mark. Clongowes was in command at Newton Abbot when falling at the last in May and he must enter calculations on his first run for Neil King. C&D winner Stanley Pincombe and Kansas Du Berlais are capable of being in the shake-up as well. SELECTION - Baltray toteeachway: Clongowes

RACE 7

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

Nicky Henderson has an excellent record around here and he may about to unleash a smart sort in Irish point-to-point winner WESTERN HARMONY, who was a costly purchase at the Goffs UK Spring sale. He is related to multiple winners and may have too much for Electric Mason, who ran a highly encouraging race on his Rules debut when third at Ascot. Mount Gay Run should come on for a satisfactory effort first time out at Chepstow. SELECTION - Western Harmony toteeachway: Electric Mason

LAST MEETING REVIEW

The days action began with a novices’ hurdle which went the way of the Nicky Henderson trained Shanagh Bob who rode out a comfortable seven lengths winner. The gelding was a strong favourite in the betting, going off at just 2/9 and absolutely justified that support on just the second start of his racing career (the first being a strong win in an Irish point). Despite looking a tad green, he rode well under James Bowen and it was a comprehensive win. He looks to be one to watch going forward for new trainer Nicky Henderson. We had a short-priced favourite clutching the win in the second too as Saligo Bay looked every bit the star that the market made him out to be. Gary Moore’s gelding took a keen hold of the race early on before pushing on to take the lead from just before 2 out. He stormed clear of his rivals and was even able to ease off inside the final furlong. No other horse came close as he finished a massive 20 lengths clear of the remainder with big-price outsider Canford Light taking second. Five went to post for our third race and it was the Paul Nicholls and Bryony Frost combination that came in clutch as Brave Kingdom took the win. Going off at 11/4, the lightly-races sevenyear-old jumped well in his first go at a handicap and looked strong throughout. He took the lead late on kept on well to score the win. The market leader General Medrano looked to be finishing strongly but ran out of steam inside the final furlong and could only manage second. Next up we had a 0-105 novice’s handicap hurdle which saw the Andy Irvine Birdman Bob clutch the first win of his career after a strong ride from Philip Armson in the saddle. The gelding started well and found himself prominent throughout the contest. He raced a little too wide midway through the race but did well to get back on track and ride out the winner over Ede’lffs Rock in second. Even money favourite Duhallow Tommy couldn’t justify the support and only managed third. The fifth saw Stanley Pincombe take the win in the Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle. Chris Gordon’s gelding raced well, Miss Molly Landau keeping him in touch with the leaders, biding her time as she waited for the opportunity to make her move. It was a tight finish however and he battled well to hold on to first as No Rematch made the challenge Evan Williams’ gelding could only manage second. The duo of Gary and Jamie Moore completed a double on the day as Kotmask stormed to victory in the sixth. Despite some early issues with his jumping, he looked a little awkward over the fences, he got back on track well to win by an impressive nine lengths ahead of Chris Gordon’s Red Windsor in second. Kotmask has looked bright so far this season and could be one to keep an eye on. Our finale went to Abbeyhill who did well after being held up in the rear early on. He had struggled when last seen at Fontwell but looked to have benefited from that run as he looked much improved here. Dylan Whelan kept his mount back early on before making strong headway late on in the race, he took the lead just before the second last, keeping on well to secure the win.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys This afternoon’s card gets underway with the Weatherbys & Birdie Calendars Maiden Hurdle, in which 13 go to post, over 2m4½f. Of those with hurdling form, Bentley’s Return, Bob Bob Ricard and Hurricane Danny probably set the standard, with the former finishing third at Fontwell, despite making a fairly serious error. Bob Bob Ricard boasts consistent form figures and he, too, made a serious mistake at the final flight, when runnerup at Wetherby. Hurricane Danny improved on his debut fifth, when chasing home stable-mate Isaac des Obeaux at Chepstow last month and Paul Nicholls has his horses in fine form at present. The longer trip looks sure to suit this son of No Risk At All.

Bentley’s Return, Bob Bob Ricard and Hurricane Danny probably set the standard Nelson Criq also showed ability at Warwick, whilst Hawaii du Mestivel and Village Master boast placed form from Irish Points. Jack Sparrow Grey ran on quite well in a Sandown bumper recently, so this has the making of a competitive contest. Weatherbys also sponsor race five, the 0-125 weatherbysshop.co.uk Mares’ Handicap Hurdle, which is staged over the same trip as the opening maiden. WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW

The weights are headed by Joe Tizzard’s Ilovethenightlife, a three-time winner last season as a novice, with her third success coming in a valuable Grade 2 handicap at Newbury. Now just 5lbs higher, she was pulled-up at Wincanton on her return, but shaped well for a long way and with that run under her belt, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her bounce right back to form. Wynn House won that corresponding Wincanton handicap in both 2021 and 2022, and she has been chasing since. A faller at Cheltenham when last seen in April, she reverts to the smaller obstacles on the very same mark from which she won those two Wincanton races and the drier the conditions, the better her chance. Given that she has won first time out in each of her four seasons, she warrants utmost respect, provided that the ground isn’t too soft. All The Glory has been in consistent form, including when runner-up over today’s course-and-distance last month (travelled well), whilst both The Height Of Fame and A Tickatickatiming arrive here on the back of a win. The former won a fairly weak race at Wincanton, so will need to improve in a stronger race and the latter won a decent maiden hurdle here last month. She tries a longer trip, whilst Iorens remains relatively lightly-raced.

USE OF SCREENS It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

HORSE CARE AT PLUMPTON At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
