WELCOME Welcome to The Southern Cranes Raceday Our third fixture of the season and I would like to welcome you to The Southern Cranes Raceday.

We have already had a great start to the season, welcoming many thousands of people and seeing some fantastic horses and close finishes. We are sure today will be equally as exciting and I thank you for your continued support.

I would like to thank our Partner Southern Cranes and Access Ltd who are sponsoring six of the seven races and Roger and Jenny who are celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. We appreciate all the support and wish you all a tremendous day.

We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 76 runners declared across 7 great races worth a total of £118,000 of prize money, the most valuable Jumps race meeting in the UK today. Our feature on the track today is our fourth race the £35,000 Class 3 Mannok Build (GB) Ltd Handicap Hurdle which was won last year by Lord Baddesley, trained by Chris Gordon and ridden by Harry Cobden. The renewal this year looks strong with 9 going to post. We also have a £28,000 Class 3 Littlehampton Welding Ltd Handicap Chase with 13 going to post.

Before the action begins, do get yourselves down to the Chasers Bar in the Lewes Stand for 11.45am where Colin Brown will take you through a Jumps Season Preview with some jockeys and trainers who have runners here today.

Our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very well received and today we are lucky to have De Barley Basket, who ran 18 times during his career winning 5 races and being placed a further 5 times. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat.

Our next fixture is Monday 20th November, Racehorse Sanctuary Raceday and then we have our two Christmas fixtures on Monday 4th and Monday 18th December, so we hope to see many of you back here for the Christmas Parties as there is always such a great atmosphere both on and off the track, with the Christmas jumpers, live music, hot chestnuts, free candy cane for everyone and competitive racing. Christmas is always in high demand, so if you are thinking of booking hospitality for either the 4th or 18th December make sure you contact our team now, not to miss out.

CUSTOMER INFORMATION Horse Care at Plumpton At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

BETTING INFORMATION A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

Pick your winner!

There are many ways that you can pick your selection: - Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses.

- Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper.

- Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

Where to place your bet – In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

Place your bet Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place.

Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet: – Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off .

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings – Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g)

for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE 1

An interesting race where Paul Nicholls sends course bumper winner Country Lady over hurdles for the first time, looking to put her Plumpton knowledge to good use. She can go well, but Nicky Henderson has decided to rely on BRAVE JEN here, following her wind surgery. She is related to plenty of winners over hurdles and is bred to do better in this sphere, so we may see her come home in front. Goodtimecrew and Fortuitous Favour are others to consider in what may prove an informative renewal. totewin: Brave Jen toteeachway: Country Lady

RACE 2

Sadler’s Bay remains a maiden but he ran his best race yet when third over hurdles at Warwick, beaten less than two lengths over three miles despite his saddle slipping. If he takes to fences then he could go well, but he might struggle to cope with THEONLYWAYISWESSEX. The selection ran on to be beaten a neck in a 2m hurdle at Bangor and should only improve for the step up in trip, though his ability to jump fences has to be taken on trust. RACE 3

Avada Kedavra was a well-beaten fourth in a point-to-point at Quakerstown in April but he makes his debut over hurdles here and looks the sort to improve as he matures and strengthens. Emailandy was third in his second bumper and is worth watching on his first start following wind surgery, but GOODWIN is readily preferred in this field. He won a Fontwell bumper by eight lengths in February and looks set for a rewarding campaign over hurdles this season for the Chris Gordon stable. totewin: Goodwin toteeachway: Emailandy

RACE 4

Pyramid Place went in by just over three lengths at Chepstow last month and has to be considered off 7lb higher, but conditions could be very different this time around. Therefore, the vote goes to MR FREEDOM, who put in a bold display to finish second in a class 2 event at Fontwell last time and the four-year-old ought to go close off only a 2lb higher mark now eased in grade. Lord Baddesley looks the best of the rest after his third at Plumpton. totewin: Mr Freedom toteeachway: Pyramid Place

RACE 5

KAYF HERNANDO took care of his nearest rival by over two lengths when scoring at Southwell in April and he was given a 5lb rise for that victory. The seven-year-old makes his return to action after undergoing wind surgery and he could be the one to beat. Wouldubewell was an easy 12-length winner at Wincanton in the spring and she should have her say off a 3lb higher rating, while Blade Runner is another to consider after his success at Chepstow. totewin: Kayf Hernando toteeachway: Wouldubewell

RACE 6

WEST END BOY took a big step forward when winning easily on his handicap debut at Wincanton eight days ago and the son of Westerner is extremely hard to oppose as he does not have to carry a penalty for that conditional jockeys’ handicap success. Western Soldier also arrives here on the back of an impressive victory and he should not be discounted, while Parc d’Amour is another to note. totewin: West End Boy toteeachway: Western Soldier

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

The hat-trick seeking Godot has to be of interest on his return to action but marginal preference is for COPSHILL LAD. Milton Harris’ gelding caught the eye when staying on over 2m2f at Exeter last month and he should benefit from this extra couple of furlongs. Beat The Heat is another with strong form claims in a race of this nature, while Dylan’s Double should not be discounted on his handicap bow. totewin: Copshill Lad toteeachway: Godot

LAST MEETING REVIEW

Our second meeting of the 2023-24 season was an exciting card featuring seven races.

The opening contest of the day saw the Milton Harris trained Western Soldier justify his heavy support in the betting, easily winning the Novice’s Hurdle. The five-year-old gelding had been very successful over in Germany before switching to the Harris stable last month and it didn’t take him long to notch his first win for his new yard. He looked fair too good for the rest of the field, finishing seven lengths ahead of Flidais in second.

The second of the day saw Lucy Wadham’s Kadex bounce back from his rather modest showing at Warwick the prior to score in good style here. A confident ride from jockey Tom Cannon kept the gelding in second early before taking the lead just before 2 out. The gelding went clear late on, comfortable ahead of well-backed favourite Ya Know Yaseff in second.

This was fast becoming a good day for the favourites as King Otis won the third with ease for trainer James Owen. It was a dominant win for the seven-year-old as he belatedly scored the first win of his career. He was clear of the field from before the second to last hurdle and Lilly Pinchin was able to ease of the throttle as they approached the line.

Embolden ran well in second but was just no match for the winner.

Dan Skelton’s Sacre Coeur won the days feature race. The mare had plenty of support in the market, but Harry Fry’s Deeper Blue made her work for it at the end. Sacre Coeur was three lengths clear going after the last but Deeper Blue fought back hard to put her under pressure. It wasn’t to be however, and Sacre Coeur was always doing enough to score the win.

Small Bad Bob took the win in the next for trainer Chris Gordon. The gelding had been racing prominently throughout the contest before taking control of proceedings in the final goings. Amy Murphy’s Kaleb was a big-priced second. Going off at 18/1 the gelding finished strongly but just couldn’t catch Small Bad Bob. It was another favourite taking the win in the sixth as Evan Williams’ Ideallko took the win comfortably. Adam Wedge raced the gelding in third before switching right from two out. He finished well, going clear and winning comfortably. King Of The Story took second while Guguss Collonges, who was prominent throughout, rounded out the podium positions.

Dave Roberts’ Stamina Chope managed to break the streak of favourites in the last.

The mare going clear over the last and keeping on strongly to win without issue.

Shewearsthewellies was well-backed in the market but proved no match for her rival in the end.
