HANDICAPS

Once a horse’s ability has been assessed by the Official BHA Handicapper it is given an official rating This is an assessment that determines how much weight it shall carry compared to the other runners. In simple terms a horse rated 100 carries 2lbs less than a horse rated 102. A rating over 130 is well above average and the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is normally rated over 160 Most handicap races have an upper rating limit to encourage runners of similar ability to take part and make a competitive race e.g 0-110, and a 28lb weight-range

HURDLE RACES

One Fit Padded Hurdle: The ‘One Fit’ design is a modified hurdle frame with a custom fitting close-cell foam pad replacing the traditional birch. The hurdle was developed with the objective of reducing both the faller rate and the risk of injury as the result of a fall. They are 3ft high and placed in the ground at an attractive angle to encourage horses to jump them fluently At Perth there are five flights of Hurdles on the course Eight are jumped in a two mile race, nine in a race over two miles and five furlongs and eleven in a race over three miles.

STEEPLE CHASE

Steeplechase fences are made from hardwood frames stuffed tightly with birch. When making a fence the birch is packed in at a height of approximately 6ft, then cut down to a maximum height of 4ft 6”. There are five ‘plain fences’ on the course at Perth and two ‘open ditches’. An Open Ditch is the same height as a plain fence but has a small ditch in front of the fence to make them a bigger test for the horse and rider

At Perth there are two open ditches on the course, the first fence in the straight and the first down the back straight. Perth is one of the last remaining racecourses to have a Water Jump, this is situated in front of the main Grandstand and is much smaller than the other fences, with a 6ft wide water jump behind a small birch fence. There are eight steeplechase fences on the course. Twelve are jumped in a race over two miles, fifteen over two miles and four furlongs and nineteen in races over three miles.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

WEIGHT FOR AGE RACES

These races are designed to provide a fair and competitive contest before a horse is allocated a weight, according to his ability, to run in a Handicap These races are therefore normally for young horses aged from 3 to 5-y-o. As a 5-y-o is deemed to be stronger than a 3-y-o he/she will be made a to carry a little more weight. Once a horse has won a weight for age race he/she will be asked to carry a ‘penalty’; this is normally an additional 7lbs. Once a horse has won or run three times in a Weight for Age race he can be assessed and given a weight in a Handicap Race.

HORSE WELFARE

Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life, both during their racing career and afterwards. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected round any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse

KARTON PLEIN impressed with some fluent jumping when making all in a Southwell maiden back in February and representing a trainer and jockey combination with an outstanding record at this track, he could well find the further improvement needed to defy his opening handicap mark. Pure Gold seems sure to remain competitive, while 4-y-o Johnny Ringo has unlikely shown all he can as a hurdler after just 4 starts in this code

Race preview from Weatherbys

Today’s feature is, of course, the Jumpers To Follow-sponsored David Whitaker Handicap Chase and I am personally delighted to be up at Perth for both days of the Glorious Finale, a meeting which once signified the end of the year at Scone Palace but also hints that the core jumps season is just aroundthecorner.

Five horses will face the starter and they include 2023 winner Wasdell Dundalk, who flourished once moving to Lisa Harrison. Now a 10-year-old, he won three races in a row over today’s course-and-distance that summer and was a winner again here at the early September fixture in 2024, before finishing fourth in this race. A winner at Carlisle the following month, he is now 2lb below that last winning mark but failedtoshineherejust16daysago.

The weights are headed by Gordon Elliott’sMarsHarper, whodefiedoddsof 100/1 when finishing fourth (beaten less than 6 lengths by Jagwar) in the ‘Plate’ at Cheltenham. The nine-year-old has struggled to make an impact since but his three subsequent runs were in the Topham at Aintree and in valuable handicapsatPunchestownandGalway. He takes a drop in class and continues tofallbackdownthehandicap.

Elliott also saddles Yeats Star, last seen being carried out over hurdles at Galway, having earlier won one of his threechasestartstodate.Theyoungest runner in the field, he is open to any

amount of improvement and won at Listowelthistimelastyear.Aninteresting runnerandDannyGilliganrides.

Statuario is another 10-year-old and onewhorepresentsthestableofMickey Bowen. Since taking over the licence fromhisfatherPeter, thetrainer–ashis dad did – has enjoyed great success here at Perth, saddling three winners fromhissevenrunnersthisterm.

Winner of the Perth Gold Cup back in June, the son of Helmet is now just 1lb higher and will appreciate the drying ground.

Last of five in this race in 2024, he is a five-time winner here over fences, with three of those victories coming over this course-and-distance. With the stable continuing in fine form and the championjockeyinthesaddle, another bigruncouldbeonthecards.

The lightly-raced Whistle Stop Tour is another who is open to lots of improvement but does have plenty of ground to make up on Statuario from theirclashhereinApril.Heisalsoworse offattheweightswithWasdellDundalk when beating that rival at Ayr, so for all that he is probably the one to take fromtheraceinthelong-term,hecould improve for the run and will certainly improve once meeting softer ground laterintheyear.Blinkersareappliedfor thefirsttimetoday.

HORSE WELFARE

Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care.

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse
