Perth Racecard - Thursday 26th September

Page 1

WELCOME TO DAY 2 OF THE GLORIOUS FINALE

We are delighted to welcome you all back to Perth Racecourse on our final two-day meeting of the season with our Glorious Finale, as we enter the final furlong in our racing season.

We are delighted to welcome todays sponsors, Racing TV, Lord Mansfield and Weatherbys, without their support, this prize money on offer would be harder to sustain.

Weatherbys will be represented by Paul Ferguson, who is back for his annual trip to Perth to promote the latest addition of his book, Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers to Follow. Now in its 18th year of publication, Jumpers To Follow is not only an essential tool to help guide you through the upcoming season but can be used a reference point for seasons beyond. You’ll find him near the parade ring, so pop over for a chat and maybe you’ll find some gems for the National Hunt season.

Today’s eight race programme is highly competitive with 60 runners across the card. The feature race, The Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap Hurdle, takes place at 3.02pm and is worth £20,000. We also pay tribute to Tim Hardie in the 1:52pm Novice Handicap Chase, who brought a great deal to Perth Racecourse.

We’d also like to thank the connections of all the runners today, we are grateful that you have chosen to come and run your horses at Perth, and we are looking forward to some terrific action on the track.

Finally, we’d like to extend a warm welcome to all our racegoers, we are delighted you are here. Good luck and may the winners be a plenty.

Horse’s

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

HANDICAPS

Once a horse’s ability has been assessed by the Official BHA Handicapper it is given an official rating. This is an assessment that determines how much weight it shall carry compared to the other runners. In simple terms a horse rated 100 carries 2lbs less than a horse rated 102. A rating over 130 is well above average and the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is normally rated over 160 Most handicap races have an upper rating limit to encourage runners of similar ability to take part and make a competitive race e.g 0-110, and a 28lb weight-range

HURDLE RACES

One Fit Padded Hurdle: The ‘One Fit’ design is a modified hurdle frame with a custom fitting close-cell foam pad replacing the traditional birch. The hurdle was developed with the objective of reducing both the faller rate and the risk of injury as the result of a fall. They are 3ft high and placed in the ground at an attractive angle to encourage horses to jump them fluently

At Perth there are five flights of Hurdles on the course Eight are jumped in a two mile race, nine in a race over two miles and five furlongs and eleven in a race over three miles.

STEEPLE CHASE

Steeplechase fences are made from hardwood frames stuffed tightly with birch When making a fence the birch is packed in at a height of approximately 6ft, then cut down to a maximum height of 4ft 6”. There are five ‘plain fences’ on the course at Perth and two ‘open ditches’ An Open Ditch is the same height as a plain fence but has a small ditch in front of the fence to make them a bigger test for the horse and rider

At Perth there are two open ditches on the course, the first fence in the straight and the first down the back straight. Perth is one of the last remaining racecourses to have a Water Jump, this is situated in front of the main Grandstand and is much smaller than the other fences, with a 6ft wide water jump behind a small birch fence. There are eight steeplechase fences on the course Twelve are jumped in a race over two miles, fifteen over two miles and four furlongs and nineteen in races over three miles.

WEIGHT FOR AGE RACES

These races are designed to provide a fair and competitive contest before a horse is allocated a weight, according to his ability, to run in a Handicap These races are therefore normally for young horses aged from 3 to 5-y-o. As a 5-y-o is deemed to be stronger than a 3-y-o he/she will be made a to carry a little more weight. Once a horse has won a weight for age race he/she will be asked to carry a ‘penalty’; this is normally an additional 7lbs. Once a horse has won or run three times in a Weight for Age race he can be assessed and given a weight in a Handicap Race.

HORSE WELFARE

Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life, both during their racing career and afterwards. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected round any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse

Race preview from Weatherbys

Today’s Jumpers To Follow sponsored raceistheopeningcontest,a2m4fmares’ National Hunt novices’ hurdle, which was won in impressive fashion last year by El Elefante. She represented the Lucinda Russell stable and having also won the race in 2021 with Clearly Crazy, the local trainerisdoubly-representedhere.

BishopHillhasyettowinaracein10starts under Rules (she is 0-7 over hurdles) and herlastfivestartshavecomeovertoday’s course-and-distance. The daughter of Malinas certainly has the ability to win a race of this nature – as her official rating of105wouldsuggest–andherexperience is likely to help, but she could again be vulnerabletoanimprovingopponent.

Golden Point is bred to be useful and is a very interesting runner.

Stable-mate Golden Point is out of a sister to dual Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo and came from off the pace when finishing runner-up in an Ayr bumper in February. She was earlier ridden more positively and going up in distance looks suretosuitthedaughterofBathyrhon, sire ofseveralpromisingyoungstersincluding Valgrand, whofinishedfourthintheGrade 2 bumper at Aintree before winning twice over hurdles. The five-year-old hails from astablewholikestotargetthisfixture.

Another hurdling newcomer is former Irish Points winner Mobile Mamma, who represents trainer Ruth Jefferson, who kindly penned the Foreword in this year’s JumpersToFollowpublication.TheMahler five-year-old won at the third attempt for trainer Paul Martin Pierce and cost her new connections £32,000 when changing hands in May. Jefferson does well with maressoitwouldn’tbeashocktoseeher gowellonRulesdebut.

The two penalised runners today are Cabra Lady and Scarlet O’Tara. The former won a bumper at Uttoxeter on her penultimate start, before staying-on well when winning at this track over 2m on hurdling debut. The Irish raider ought to relish the longer trip, although she will probablyneedtoimproveagaintodefya 7lbspenalty.

Scarlet O’Tara is officially rated 108, so has a bit to find with Bishop Hill at the weights but probably just about sets the standard on what she has achieved to date as a hurdler. She actually finished in front of Bishop Hill when runner-up to last year’s winner El Elefante in a Musselburgh bumper and after getting off the mark at Bangor-on-DeeinJune,shebumpedinto a useful mare at Worcester last month. The Newland/Insole stable has been a littlequietoflate, whichisaminorconcern, otherwiseIwouldexpectaboldshow.

HORSE WELFARE

Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care.

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse
