STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

HANDICAPS

Derek Fox J

Lucinda Russell, Kinross T

Ian Macleod & Co Ltd

Once a horse’s ability has been assessed by the Official BHA Handicapper it is given an official rating This is an assessment that determines how much weight it shall carry compared to the other runners. In simple terms a horse rated 100 carries 2lbs less than a horse rated 102. A rating over 130 is well above average and the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is normally rated over 160 Most handicap races have an upper rating limit to encourage runners of similar ability to take part and make a competitive race e.g 0-110, and a 28lb weight-range

HURDLE RACES

One Fit Padded Hurdle: The ‘One Fit’ design is a modified hurdle frame with a custom fitting close-cell foam pad replacing the traditional birch. The hurdle was developed with the objective of reducing both the faller rate and the risk of injury as the result of a fall. They are 3ft high and placed in the ground at an attractive angle to encourage horses to jump them fluently

At Perth there are five flights of Hurdles on the course Eight are jumped in a two mile race, nine in a race over two miles and five furlongs and eleven in a race over three miles.

STEEPLE CHASE

Steeplechase fences are made from hardwood frames stuffed tightly with birch. When making a fence the birch is packed in at a height of approximately 6ft, then cut down to a maximum height of 3ft 6” There are five ‘plain fences’ on the course at Perth and two ‘open ditches’. An Open Ditch is the same height as a plain fence but has a small ditch in front of the fence to make them a

bigger test for the horse and rider

At Perth there are two open ditches on the course, the first fence in the straight and the first down the back straight. Perth is one of the last remaining racecourses to have a Water Jump, this is situated in front of the main Grandstand and is much smaller than the other fences, with a 6ft wide water jump behind a small birch fence. There are eight steeplechase fences on the course. Twelve are jumped in a race over two miles, fifteen over two miles and four furlongs and nineteen in races over three miles.

WEIGHT FOR AGE RACES

These races are designed to provide a fair and competitive contest before a horse is allocated a weight, according to his ability, to run in a Handicap These races are therefore normally for young horses aged from 3 to 5-y-o. As a 5-y-o is deemed to be stronger than a 3-y-o he/she will be made a to carry a little more weight. Once a horse has won a weight for age race he/she will be asked to carry a ‘penalty’; this is normally an additional 7lbs. Once a horse has won or run three times in a Weight for Age race he can be assessed and given a weight in a Handicap Race.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys

It is great to be back at Perth for the Glorious Finale meeting and we are delighted to be sponsoring two racesondayone.

Although the name of this fixture might suggest otherwise, itisoftenusedasa springboardtothenewseason ‘proper’andindeedthisyear’s GrandNationalwinnerCorach Rambler made his chasing debut at this meeting two yearsago.

El Elefante makes her hurdling debut under Derek Fox.

His trainer Lucinda Russell is represented in both Jumpers ToFollow-sponsoredcontests, starting in the opening mares’ novices’ hurdle, where ElElefantemakesherhurdling debutunderDerekFox.

Runner-upinanIrishPoint,she won both starts in bumpers last term – including at this track in April – and the fiveyear-old looks to be a bright prospect. In fact, she features prominently in this year’s publication and, therefore, is one who we are particularly excitedaboutseeinginaction.

RulesdebutanteDanganCloud also hails from the Russell stable, whilst the four previous winners ensure that this is a relatively competitive contest. The Gordon Elliott-trained pairing boast most experience and the trainer has won this race four times since 2015, whilst Stadium Talk is sure to be the pace angle – dropping back from 3m – and Condesa won smoothly on debut atthis trackduringthesummer

A smart bumper performer, shebeliedalay-offof809days whenscoringinJulyandDaryl JacobtravelsNorthtotakethe mountforhisemployers,Simon MunirandIsaacSouede.

ThesecondJumpersToFollowsponsored race is the feature, the David Whitaker Handicap Chase, inwhichsixgotopost.

Lucinda Russell and Derek Fox combine with the mare Haute Estime, who remains lightly-raced over fences. A Listed novices’ hurdle winner, she got off the mark as a chaser at Warwick in March and begins the season 7lbs lower than she did last term. The daughter of Walk In The Park could have plenty more tooffer.

The hat-trick seeking Wasdell Dundalk is one of two inform runners and represents the Cumbrian stable of Lisa Harrison, having been previously trained by Jonjo O’Neill. His last two wins have come over today’s courseand-distance and he made a bad mistake four out, when well-beaten behind BornFamoushereinJuly.

The hat-trick seeking Wasdell Dundalk is one of two in-form runners.

The last named then won Market Rasen’s Summer Plate – under an inspired Harry Cobden ride – and reverted to hurdles to win a shade cosily at this track in August. The mare has since moved back to her original stable (Iain Jardine to Claire O’Connell) and Harry Cobden maintains the partnership. Clearly on the up, she is fully 15lbs higher than when successful at Market Rasen, so will need to take another step forward, although the daughter of Famous Name is 4-4atPerthandhasnowwon herlastsixstarts.

If SPUTNIK is the same form as when last seen in the spring he might prove the answer to this handicap chase A Place Apart is second choice returned to the scene of his reappearance second. The fact Lucinda Russell has won this 3 times since 2018 also earns Thunder In Milan a place on the shortlist. TIMEFORM

HORSE WELFARE

Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care.

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse

Fixture Update

Change is afoot in 2024 with significant changes to the fixture list, predominantly due to Premierisation and an extended Jump Jockeys summer break. We will be hosting 13 fixtures from April to October with the loss of June Saturday and the two-day meeting at the beginning of August and in return a new afternoon raceday on Tuesday 22 October will instead close off Perth’s racing calendar for the year

Premier and Core racing is part of a two-year trial by the BHA and in 2024 there will be a significant change to the funding of racing.

Fixtures have been divided into two tiers: Premier and Core racing, with £1.9 million of Core racing funding being diverted to fund Premier racing, mainly the cards broadcast live on ITV. Unfortunately for Perth, we will not stage any Premier racing due to being a Summer Jumps course. Perth will endeavour to maintain prize money levels. Time will tell if the BHA strategy is the right decision for British Racing.

WASDELL DUNDALK has looked rejuvenated lately and he gets the marginal vote as he bids for a quick-fire C&D hat-trick. The seven-timer seeking Born Famous is an obvious danger for all that she’s left Iain Jardine since her latest success, and Haute Estime is likely to feature if tuned up for this first outing in five months.
