Y 13 AUGUST 2022 Raceday DESTINY STONE OF Complementary

Most handicap races have an upper rating limit to encourage runners of similar ability to take part and make a competitive race e.g 0-110, and a 28lb weight-range HURDLE RACES
These races are designed to provide a fair and competitive contest before a horse is allocated a weight, according to his ability, to run in a Handicap These races are therefore normally for young horses aged from 3 to 5-y-o. As a 5-y-o is deemed to be stronger than a 3-y-o he/she will be made a to carry a little more weight. Once a horse has won a weight for age race he/she will be asked to carry a ‘penalty’; this is normally an additional 7lbs. Once a horse has won or run three times in a Weight for Age race he can be assessed and given a weight in a Handicap Race. distance Has won over this distance at Was a beaten favourite

Hurdles are made of ash with a birch filling, with foam padding on all legs and top rails. They are 3ft high and placed in the ground at an attractive angle to encourage horses to jump them fluently At Perth there are five flights of Hurdles on the course Eight are jumped in a two mile race, nine in a race over two miles and five furlongs and eleven in a race over three miles.
Steeplechase fences are made from hardwood frames stuffed tightly with birch. When making a fence the birch is packed in at a height of approximately 6ft, then cut down to a maximum height of 3ft 6” There are five ‘plain fences’ on the course at Perth and two ‘open ditches’. An Open Ditch is the same height as a plain fence but has a small ditch in front of the fence to make them a bigger test for the horse and rider At Perth there are two open ditches on the course, the first fence in the straight and the first down the back straight. Perth is one of the last remaining racecourses to have a Water Jump, this is situated in front of the main Grandstand and is much smaller than the other fences, with a 6ft wide water jump behind a small birch fence. There are eight steeplechase fences on the course. Twelve are jumped in a race over two miles, fifteen over two miles and five furlongs and nineteen in races over three miles.
STEEPLE CHASE
Once a horse’s ability has been assessed by the Official BHA Handicapper it is given an official rating. This is a judgement that determines how much weight it shall carry compared to the other runners. In simple terms a horse rated 100 carries 2lbs less than a horse rated 102. A rating over 130 is well above average and the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is normally rated over 150

JOHN ELLIOT
John Elliot has been a racehorse owner for over 25 years and one of his favourite meetings is the Perth Festival in April. John has had several winners at Perth, some in partnerships and syndicates but his favourite, running in his colours, is Wyfield Rose who in 2016 won five times in total, two of the victories, coming at Perth, one by 17 lengths, eased down! Now resident in Langholm but brought up in Hawick, John had the great honour of being Chief Guest at Hawick Common Riding this year and as well as celebrating his 75th birthday today, he and Liz will celebrate their golden wedding in October, making 2022 a truly memorable year

Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse

THE STONE OF DESTINY
The original Stone of Destiny was used for centuries in the coronation of Scottish monarchs, until the famous stone was stolen from nearby Scone Abbey, by King Edward 1 of England in 1296, and used in the crowning ceremony of virtually every monarch since. However, to add intrigue, some doubt remains about whether or not the monks of Scone secretly substituted their ‘original’ crowning plinth for a lump of local stone; the revered rock was eventually returned to Scotland in 1996 and is currently on display in Edinburgh Castle Pictured above is our specially commissioned trophy modelled by local Scottish artist Gordon Muir, which is an exact miniature of the real thing. For this trophy, Gordon sourced the same seam of red sandstone as the “original” by kind permission of the Mansfield family from Scone Palace. The racecourse is delighted to celebrate the rich tapestry of Perthshire heritage via its race programme and thereby develop links with the wider community
Today our £30,000 Class 2 Handicap Hurdle, formerly known as The Summer Champion Hurdle, is being run as The Stone of Destiny Handicap Hurdle Race.
