POINT-TO-POINTING EXPLAINED Point-to-Point racing is fundamentally amateur horse racing over fences, which combine two traditions from Hunting and the Military.

Point-to-Point meetings are run by volunteers, but there is a formal national structure for the sport. This lays down the rules and regulations that govern the fixtures, jockeys and horses. This allows races to be framed to pit horses of a similar level against each other, providing competitive racing in a similar way to that of racing under rules, such as at Cheltenham or Aintree.

There is one major difference, the horses are only declared to run on the day. As a result, the actual runners are announced before each race along with any missing or amended information.

You, as a spectator, need to mark your card accordingly before placing your bet.

Once you know who’s running, you can choose who you think will win. Consider the form provided in the race card as well as taking a look at your fancied horse when they parade in the paddock. Many also look for inspiration in the horses’ names and jockey’s colours as well.

When you’ve made your choice, place your bet at the on-course bookies. They offer odds against each horse, normally a whole number. The bookies will give you that number in return for one of yours. For example, place a bet of £10 on at 6-1 – you’ll get £70 back.

This is £60 plus your original £10 stake. If it says 6-4, it means you get £60 for a £40 stake if your horse wins – a total of £100.

You’ll get a betting slip to confirm what you’ll get back if you win.

You can also place an each-way bet. Half your stake is going on the horse to win and the other half that it will get placed. his is when your horse is among the first three horses over the line. The latter odds will be divided by five, but you’ll get your money back as a whole. An each-way bet is generally only worth doing on longer odds to make it worthwhile.

Point-to-Points aren’t just about gambling though – it’s all about the thrill of the day, the food, picnics, spending time with friends and family as well as soaking up the atmosphere of live sport. Enjoy yourself.
