The Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Colwick Cup Handicap is the feature race of this afternoon’s card and is named after the racecourse’s current site, Colwick Park. As well as the excellent racing this afternoon, we hope you will make the most of Nottingham’s many bars, food outlets, and restaurants in this relaxed and friendly setting.
A warm welcome to Nottingham Racecourse for Colwick Cup Day, an afternoon of competitive racing, featuring seven races. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors Weatherbys and British EBF for their generous support across this afternoon’s card.
The third of today’s races is a qualifier for our Jockey Club Grassroots Mile Series Final, which takes place back here on 28th September. The Series is aimed at offering enhanced prize money to horses who tend to do their racing at a notch or two below Group or Listed level. Looking ahead to this meeting, tickets are still available to purchase, either through the racecourse office or on our website, www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/nottingham. I hope that you have a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon here at Nottingham Racecourse and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck.

RACEDAY PREVIEW
Shaara runs in the Weatherbys Racing Bank Fillies’ Handicap
Whilst sponsoring one or two races at a particular fixture is common practice for Weatherbys, sponsoring an entire seven-race card is a unique occurrence, but that is the case at Nottingham this afternoon and we are delighted to do so.
DESPITE just four going to post, perhaps the Weatherbys Racing Bank Fillies’ Handicap a 0-95 class 3 contest over an extended 1m2f is the most intriguing race on the card. The weights are headed by the lightly-raced Shaara, who reappeared in the Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury and bounced back to winning form in a novice event at Haydock last month. She was a comfortable winner over a mile and the runner-up advertised the form when winning at Windsor recently. An opening mark of 91 looks fair and although not a certain stayer on breeding, she finished strongly at the Merseyside track, suggesting that she could actually improve for the extra quarter-mile Persist represents the powerful axis of William Haggas and Cheveley Park Stud, although she has twice been beaten off a lower mark in handicaps, whilst Terra Mitica and Qabilah complete the field, with all four runners being trained in Newmarket. The last-named won a novice contest over course-anddistance on her penultimate start, whilst the Sir Michael Stoute-trained filly looked ahead of her mark when winning a Salisbury handicap last month. The daughter of Ulysses didn’t seem to handle Chester the time before, so ought to relish the more galloping track this afternoon. Up 6lbs for that latest success, she should go well under Ryan Moore. The most valuable race on the card is the Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Colwick Cup Handicap, a class 4 event over 2m. Three of the eight strong field clashed at Sandown just

Based on his narrow defeat at the hands of First Ruler, Indemnify has the best form on offer in the second maiden on the card, the Weatherbys Hamilton Maiden Stakes, a class 5 for three-year-olds and upwards, over an extended mile Roger Varian’s Lope de Vega colt was beaten at short odds at Newcastle last time, but that form was franked on Saturday, when the third home won a handicap at Haydock. He cost 260,000gns as a foal and has shown enough to win a race of this nature at the very least. Enjoy the action.
Elsewhere on the card, the biggest field is assembled for the opening race, the Weatherbys Stallion Book EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, a class 5 over an extended six furlongs. Hi Clare who runs in the colours of owners Paul and Clare Rooney probably sets the standard, based on her second at Pontefract in early-June She was a non-runner (due to good-to-soft ground) at Haydock a month later and it will be interesting to see if she can build on her two placed efforts (third on debut at Wolverhampton) to date
Paul Ferguson, Weatherbys Indemnify (sky blue) was beaten at short odds at Newcastle last time and is expected to run well.
Roger Varian has three runners today at Nottingham.
16 days ago, with Rushford narrowly coming out on top over 1m6f Sir Mark Prescott’s runner came from last-to-first under Luke Morris, to defeat the front-running Pons Aelius by a head. The winner wore cheek pieces for the first time and having hit the front travelling best, appeared to idle in the closing stages. He should have little trouble with this longer trip and the handicapper has only raised him 4lbs for the victory The runner-up has a 2lbs pull at the weights for that head defeat and he, too, has yet to race beyond 1m6f. The Charlie and Mark Johnstontrained son of Galileo has been the model of consistency of late, although this will be his tenth start of the season and his sixth since mid-June Back in fourth was First Officer, who was staying-on on the climb to the line, suggesting that he is another who will appreciate this longer trip He was having his first start beyond 1m4f at Sandown and should again be involved. This is a competitive contest, as you would expect, but that piece of form would appear to be key and the threeyear-olds in receipt of a sizeable age-allowance (13lbs) might well dominate Interestingly, the fourth and final three-year-old in the lineup is I Have A Voice, who is having his first start for trainer Nigel Hawke, having moved from Jim Bolger.
