It was a real varied day at our last meeting with a whole variety of trainers, jockeys and owners making their way into the winner’s enclosure. With 3 out of the 7 races being won by the favourite, I am sure a lot of people went home with a smile.

Kicking off what was another exciting day of racing here at Newton Abbot we had a very well fancied runner in the Jon Hearne Memorial Novices’ Hurdle. Chez Hans continued Paul Nicholls’ dominance here and extended his lead in the trainers championship and trained 13th winner of the season. A 20-length winner at odd of 1/7, amateur jockey Ben Bromley will not get many easier winners than this in his career as this horse continued his winning to make it 5 in a row and he looks a very progressive type. The second race on the card was the feature and Philip Hobbs teamed up with his usual suspect Tom O’Brien as Umndeni to land the Tzora Treble Up Handicap Hurdle. Despite not being found in the betting, he was another easy winner and stormed down the home straight to land the feature race in style by 10 lengths at 15/2. Litterale Ci was the one the market came for at 9/4 but he was no match for the 5 winner on the day who found a lot when shaken up round the home turn and has subsequently been raised 9lb for this impressive performance. We seemed to have a theme of horses winning with ease at the last meeting and the third race was the most extreme case for this. A 27-length winner, Diligent got the job done for favourite backers at 3/1 but that looked a massive price considering how easy he put the Paul Sherriff Happy Retirement Handicap Chase to bed. Buckley made full use of his 7lb claim and always kept this horse handy after taking the lead after the second fence and didn’t see another rival go past the whole race. He went further clear two from home and it will be interesting to see what he can deliver next time out. The Detroit Red Treble Up Handicap Hurdle shaped up to be a very competitive race won by the Kim Bailey-trained Shinobi aty 9/2. Another front runner who got the job done at the last meeting, David Bass made all on his mount but wasn’t given an easy time in the closing stages as Spredek came from the back to make a last-ditch effort to cause an upset but always looked held, despite the winner making a mistake at the last hurdle. A game winner who appreciated the drop back in trip. The fifth race on the card had only the five runners but only three of them made it home as the favourite Rooster

Cogburn was a faller and Tikkinthebox unseated his rider. This left the race wide-open and Casa Tall took full advantage to win by two lengths in the Easily Pleased What A Legend Handicap Chase. Held up in last and badly hampered by the faller at the first, Casa Tall always was travelling the strongest throughout the race and after being nudged along two out, he found plenty under pressure to go clear by 3-lengths on the run in and kept on gamely. Another winning favourite on the day, Ragamuffin got Sam Twiston-Davies on the scoresheet at 15/8. Like many of the other winning on the day, he was ridden prominently and led the start of the race before getting headed after the fourth. He didn’t look like the winner after 3 out but when Sam Twiston-Davies started pushing the emergency button, he responded well and went clear 2 out before stumbling at the last but won with ease to go and win by 10-lengths. Another comfortable victory on the day. The final race of what was another thrilling day of racing here was the Watcombe Heights Treble Up Novices’ Handicap Chase won by Mister Tickle from the Gary Moore stable. Given a confident ride by 5lb claimer Niall Houlihan, he made all after a sound jumping performance to go away and win by 7 lengths. Another winner from the front, so that could be the key to success again today.
