A very warm welcome to you all from the team here at Newton Abbot Racecourse, your support is very much appreciated and valued and we hope you all have an enjoyable and successful day’s racing with us.
Our thanks go to our sponsors here today who are the Par Inn, Sky Sports Racing and our own Newton Abbot Racecourse Business Club members. We hope that all enjoy their day’s racing with us. Our thanks also go to the connections of Kauto the King for bringing the popular equine hero back to Newton Abbot today. We look forward to seeing him parade before the first race today and then please do go and see him close up in the stable adjacent to the annual members facility at the back of the main grandstand. We are also delighted to welcome Racing to School today who are working with a number of local schools throughout our racing season.
In our Course enclosure this afternoon we welcome the Invades initiative as they bring along hundreds of students from our local universities, building our racegoers of the present and future, we are pleased to work with the Invades team and also look forward to their return for the Saturday fixture in October.
Looking ahead we have an evening meeting here next Wednesday when we will have a Queen tribute performing post racing in the Paddock Suite upstairs, everyone is welcome to join in the fun. We race for a third time this month on the 27th May during half term when we stage another of our popular family days when there are lots of activities for the family to enjoy. We have a revamped Ladies Night on 23rd June when after a great evening you can chose to watch local band Harbour in the Paddock Suite or watch England play Ghana on our big screen straight after racing finishes. That rounds off another busy month’s racing in June as we also race on the 3rd and in the evening of the 12th. July sees another three fixtures the 3rd, 13th and then Sunday 19th July which is another great family day and features our Rowcroft Hospice Mascot Race, for which entries are now open.
Don’t forget too that Newton Abbot Racecourse is open all year round for events, special occasions, conferencing and much more, check out our events calendar on the website or drop us a line or give us a call if you have a specific enquiry or want to hold your event here.
Finally thank you again for all your support through thick and thin, it is hugely appreciated and valued and we hope to see you again soon (please see our full fixture list later in this racecourse).
Have a great day.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

KAUTO THE KING
Course specialist Kauto The King returns to his beloved Newton Abbot today after being retired in November 2024.
Kauto the King will be parading before the first race in the Parade Ring today. He will then be based in the stable adjacent to our annual members room.
Trained by Colin Tizzard and then son Joe, the Jenny Perry and Celia Goaman owned bay began his racing career in February of 2018. While running well in defeat, his first success didn’t come until two years later, where he won nicely at Wincanton.
That win really kick started his career and in 2021 he won three races on the bounce, including his first at Newton Abbot in May of 2021, where he beat Huntsman Son by a short head It would be a whole year until he returned to Devon but when he did he made it two from two, when running home strongly to beat Mercian Prince While it had been a year between his two wins, it took only 11 days for him to win his third, as he bolted up at short odds by seven lengths over his favoured intermediate trip.
Three more placed efforts the following summer were complimented by a victory in September 2023, where he once again scored by a short head
As he entered his twilight years, winning wasn’t always the easiest of tasks but in August of 2024 he picked up his tenth and final win at none other than Newton Abbot, showing his usual resilient attitude to claim Bagheera Ginge on the line and win by a neck
That would be his thirteenth and final visit to the track in his racing career, where he notched up an impressive five wins and never finished outside the top four, a testament to his impeccable attitude as a racehorse.
Following retirement, the loveable Twelve-year-old now spends his time in the care of Sara Scudamore, “Since I’ve had him in December 2024 he’s been leading our young horses in their early education, being a great tutor to all of the next generations. As well as being great company to my daughter’s Shetland pony. He has also competed in dressage and behaved impeccably. It never fails to amaze how intelligent and quick to adapt to a new life the vast majority of thoroughbreds are. It has been a pleasure to be involved with him.” This year he will be aimed mainly at dressage but potentially some RoR show classes towards the year ime ce en ” t dressage ses

HORSE WELFARE AT NEWTON ABBOT
At every race meeting held at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are three veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. All three veterinary surgeons have specific expertise in the treatment of thoroughbreds and racing injuries
One vet will attend the Start and then follow the race in his/her vehicle in order to attend, fallen, lame or pulled up horses. A second vet will watch the horses in the Parade Ring and as they leave for the Start. This vet will then also follow the race in his/her vehicle to attend to any further incidents of fallen, lame or pulled up horses. The third vet will be on duty to attend to any incidents in the Stable Yard, or to treat injuries from previous races that have returned to the Stables. If the third vet is not required in the Stables during a race he/she will view the race from the steps to the “Old Press Box”, where they have a good view of the whole track, and are on hand as the horses pull up after the race
If all three vets are occupied treating horses, the BHA Veterinary Officer(s) on duty can be called upon to aid.
Whenever possible, at least one of the veterinary surgeons should be present in the Unsaddling Enclosure after each race
USE OF SCREENS
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse when receiving veterinary attention. This does not reflect the severity of any injury but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around an injured/fallen horse.
