Today is our All About the Horse Family Fun Day so should be plenty of fun for everyone this afternoon. We are delighted to be able to welcome Gold Cup hero Native River to the Racecourse this afternoon and we encourage everyone to pop along and see him in our portable stable or when he parades with us here today. It’s amazing to have the chance to get up close to an equine superstar We’re please to welcome Retraining of Racehorses as well today and they’re here and free to talk about their outstanding work across our industry, please do go and have a chat with them.

There’s plenty of children’s fun as well with inflatables, face painting, play area in the course enclosure, whilst our popular mascot Blaze will be making regular jaunts in and around the racecourse, make sure you give Blaze a friendly hello.

On the Racing theme, please do stay with us after Racing has finished where up in the Paddock Bar we have a Question of Racing based on the popular TV show a question of sport two teams of racing personalities clash for the Chris Wills Trophy under the guidance of host David Fitzgerald Star names appearing include Paul Nicholls, Johnson White and Tom Malone. The event is free to everyone to attend so do get yourselves along there, the bar will be staying open and pork baps will be available to purchase from the carvery. We’ll get everything under way as soon as we can after the last race. Our thanks go to Wollens for supporting the event.

We also have Autism in Racing with us today for the first time with their sensory room located in the course enclosure.

We have an exciting season ahead here at Newton Abbot with plenty happening on and off course. Please have a look at our Fixture List with its new themes elsewhere in this official programme. June will soon be on us when we have three race meetings including our two evening fixtures of the year on Friday 13th and our ever-popular Ladies Evening on 24th June Our Family Fun Day looking further ahead to July this year features a mascot race to add to the fun before racing on Sunday 20th July, whilst the Family Fun Series continues to the end of the season with dates on Thursday 21st August and Wednesday 29th October, the final one with a Halloween theme.

We don’t have long to wait for our next fixture too, which is this time next week on Wednesday 4th June.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Finally thank you to you all for supporting us through thick and thin, it is hugely valued and here’s to a memorable and successful season for all. Have a great day.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

NATIVE RIVER

In a career that spanned seven years, he won 14 of his 32 races, 10 of which came at Graded level. The highlight came in 2018 when he virtually made all to land the Blue Ribbon Cheltenham Gold Cup.

In addition to his Festival success he also took the honours in the Hennessy Gold Cup and Welsh Grand National in 2016, three Denman Chases (2017, 2018 & 2020), the Many Clouds Chase in 2019 and Cotswold Chase in 2021.

Native River will be appearing in our new portable stable, alongside the ROR team and parading before Racing today.

Everyone is welcome and invited to come along and see him and get close up and meet a great champion!

TELLAIRSUE arrives in decent form and has the size to make a chaser, so is taken to make a winning start over fences Daring Plan took a big step back in the right direction following a breathing operation when a close third at Fontwell 2 weeks ago so rates the main threat ahead of Illogical Logic, who’s on a workable mark.

HORSE WELFARE AT NEWTON ABBOT

At all race meetings held at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are three specially qualified Veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. One vet will attend the start and follow the race in his/her vehicle and attend fallen, lame or pulled up horses Another vet will observe the finishing straight from the small stand beside the last fence in the final straight. They will immediately attend fallen or lame horses at this last fence or flight of hurdles.

If directed, they may be required to attend other incidents in the final straight. The third vet will be available to complete the treatment of urgent cases within the stable yard. This third vet will, if not otherwise occupied, observe the race from the bank at the outside of the track by the ‘in-line’ steward’s box and be available to attend horses finishing the race

In the event of two vets being occupied treating an emergency case, the SVS will follow horses. Whenever possible, one of the Veterinary Surgeons should be present in the Unsaddling Enclosure after each race

USE OF SCREENS

It is now standard practise for screens to be erected around any horses when receiving veterinary attention. This does not reflect the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not therefore assume the worst if you see the screen erected around a fallen horse.

In Memory of Chris Wills

Chris Wills was a lifelong supporter of Newton Abbot Racecourse and liked nothing better than a day out here followed by a few beers in the Teign Cellars and a curry at the Eastern Eye.

His wake was held at the racecourse in 2024 and on that occasion family, friends and former colleagues agreed that they would honour and celebrate him with a race in his name every year onwards.

Today his mother Catherine and brother Nick supported by family and close friends will be here to present the prize to the winning owner Chris himself had shares in some horses with Jimmy Frost and had many near misses.

He also loved a good Quiz and will no doubt be smiling down on tonight’s A Question of Racing which will be played for the Chris Wills Trophy.

Get yourself along to see A Question of Racing tonight for that Chris Wills Trophy - it’s free to attend and is in the Paddock Bar after Racing this evening.
