A very warm welcome to you all from the team here at Newton Abbot Racecourse, your support is very much appreciated and valued and we hope you all have an enjoyable and successful afternoon’s racing with us on our Family Fun Day!

Our thanks go to our sponsors here today who are Stock Exe, Totnes & Bridgetown Races Company, Peninsula Finance (honouring our great former Chairman Hugh Michelmore), the friends and family of Chris Wills, the friends and family of Pamela Ann Dobbs plus the Racing Foundation supporting Autism In Racing. We hope that everyone enjoys their day’s racing with us.

Today is a Family Fun Day so lots of activities for the children in our Course enclosure (everyone welcome to pop along). We have bouncy castles and inflatables, our Mascot Blaze, the play park, face painting on the decking of Alfrescos, sweet stall, Hook A Duck and the Human Fruit Machine. In addition, in the racecard you will find a quiz for the kids to complete and if they get all questions right you can win a free ice cream just hand your sheet in to the ice cream van in the course enclosure. In the Course Bar this afternoon we also have clothes peg horse crafting!

We are delighted to welcome Autism In Racing here today and their sensory unit will be located near our pedestrian entrance. Please do find them online or chat to the team here today to find out about the brilliant work that they are doing across the UK’s racecourses.

Given the forecast temperature for today, please look out for a free water stations located around the racecourse today. Make sure you keep yourselves hydrated.

We have lots more exciting racing coming up too! Next month we have a revamped Ladies Night on 23rd June when after a great evening you can chose to watch local band Harbour in the Paddock Suite or watch England play Ghana on our big screen straight after racing finishes. That rounds off another busy month’s racing in June as we also race on the 3rd and in the evening of the 12th. Moving on to July which sees another three fixtures- the 3rd, 13th and then Sunday 19th July which is another great family day and features our Rowcroft Hospice Mascot Race, for which entries are now open.

Don’t forget too that Newton Abbot Racecourse is open all year round for events, special occasions, conferencing and much more, check out our events calendar on the website or drop us a line or give us a call if you have a specific enquiry or want to hold your event here.

Finally thank you again for all your support through thick and thin, it is hugely appreciated and valued and we hope to see you again soon (please see our full fixture list later in this racecard). Have a great day

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Hugh Michelmore

Chairman Newton Abbot Racecourse Ltd.

2013-2025

Today will be the first running of the Hugh Michelmore Memorial Handicap Chase, run in memory of our late former Chairman and fellow Director.

Hugh’s professional background was as a Solicitor, qualifying in 1977 and becoming a senior partner at Gill Akaster (GA) Solicitors in 2002. While Hugh retired from legal practise in 2016 he remained fully engaged in his many business interests, in particular Newton Abbot Racecourse, where he had served as non executive Director since 1985.

During fifty years of service to Newton Abbot Racecourse Hugh showed exemplary leadership and business acumen, always underpinned by a genuine love of jump racing and loyalty to the racecourse in particular.

Hugh attended nearly every race meeting held at Newton Abbot, and was usually to be found chatting to shareholders, race goers and box holders during the day, always charming and alert for ways to improve their Raceday experience.

Hugh is greatly missed by the Shareholders, Directors and staff at Newton Abbot Racecourse and we welcome his wife Janine together with his colleagues from Peninsula to today’s special raceday.

In Memory of Chris Wills

This is the third year of the race in honour of Chris who sadly passed away in May 2024.

He was a great supporter not just of the racecourse but of sport in general across South Devon throughout a very successful legal and corporate career Today his family , friends and former colleagues are here in his honour and will likely follow his regular path afterward for a beer in the town and a curry at the Eastern Eye.

Although enticed to London for a few trips to see West Ham United, he would have been devastated by their form this season, the fulcrum of his life was undoubtedly this wonderful part of the world.

A passionate supporter of local charities, especially the Paignton Picturehouse for whom he was heavily involved Chris enjoyed nothing better than spending his time with friends having fun in a convivial atmosphere.

This racecourse was very much a part of that and this race is an annual way we can toast him as his memory will live forever.

Reel Orange is sure to be popular having won over C&D a fortnight ago but at the likely prices it could be worth chancing ST LUKES CHELSEA, who needs to put a lesser effort behind him but ran his best race from this mark on penultimate start. Ocean Heights represents a trainer/jockey combination in red-hot form and he can fight out minor honours with Scoresby.

HORSE WELFARE AT NEWTON ABBOT

At every race meeting held at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are three veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. All three veterinary surgeons have specific expertise in the treatment of thoroughbreds and racing injuries

One vet will attend the Start and then follow the race in his/her vehicle in order to attend, fallen, lame or pulled up horses. A second vet will watch the horses in the Parade Ring and as they leave for the Start. This vet will then also follow the race in his/her vehicle to attend to any further incidents of fallen, lame or pulled up horses. The third vet will be on duty to attend to any incidents in the Stable Yard, or to treat injuries from previous races that have returned to the Stables. If the third vet is not required in the Stables during a race he/she will view the race from the steps to the “Old Press Box”, where they have a good view of the whole track, and are on hand as the horses pull up after the race

If all three vets are occupied treating horses, the BHA Veterinary Officer(s) on duty can be called upon to aid.

Whenever possible, at least one of the veterinary surgeons should be present in the Unsaddling Enclosure after each race

USE OF SCREENS

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse when receiving veterinary attention. This does not reflect the severity of any injury but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around an injured/fallen horse.
