Newton Abbot Racecard - Wednesday 13th May

Page 1

WEDNESDAY 13TH MAY 2026

A very warm welcome to you all from the team here at Newton Abbot Racecourse, your support is very much appreciated and valued and we hope you all have an enjoyable and successful day’s racing with us.

Our thanks go to our sponsors here today who are Totnes & Bridgetown Steeplechase Company, the friends and family of Terry Wheeler (happy birthday for tomorrow Terry), St Austell Brewery and William Hill, plus we are supporting Racing Welfare’s Mental Health Awareness Week We hope that everyone enjoys their evening’s racing with us.

After this evening’s seven race card you are welcome to join the party in the paddock suite on the first floor of the main grandstand where Freddie Mercury tribute act Andy John Bohemian Champion will be belting out all your Queen anthems. Get along there for a proper old singalong!

Looking ahead we have our third raceday this month on the 27th May. That’s during half term and we are staging another of our popular family days when there are lots of activities for the family to enjoy. Blaze the mascot will be out and about and we have our permanent play park. There will be inflatables, face painting, human fruit machine, hook a duck, sweets stall and clothes peg horse making! Next month we have a revamped Ladies Night on 23rd June when after a great evening you can chose to watch local band Harbour in the Paddock Suite or watch England play Ghana on our big screen straight after racing finishes. That rounds off another busy month’s racing in June as we also race on the 3rd and in the evening of the 12th. Moving on to July which sees another three fixtures- the 3rd, 13th and then Sunday 19th July which is another great family day and features our Rowcroft Hospice Mascot Race, for which entries are now open.

Don’t forget too that Newton Abbot Racecourse is open all year round for events, special occasions, conferencing and much more, check out our events calendar on the website or drop us a line or give us a call if you have a specific enquiry or want to hold your event here.

Finally thank you again for all your support through thick and thin, it is hugely appreciated and valued and we hope to see you again soon (please see our full fixture list later in this racecard). Have a great day

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

Stewards Note:

GONE AWAY MADAM: Following its run on 13/4/2024 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed

Probable S.P.’s: 9-4 Arbitration (IRE), 11-4 Arctic Voyage (GB), 3-1 Lirone du Seuil (FR), 20-1 Medina Blue (IRE), 25-1 Blue Siam (IRE), 28-1 Gone Away Madam (GB), 33-1 Jubertilee (IRE), Bontessony Doll (GB), 80-1 Louis des Landes (FR), 150-1 Keep Off The Sugar (GB)

Those with hurdle experience don’t set the bar that high so perhaps fairly useful Flat performer ARBITRATION can make a winning start to his hurdle career for Joe Tizzard. If first-time cheekpieces help Dan Skelton’s Lirone du Seuil to recapture the form he showed when second on his hurdle debut in France he may pose a bigger threat than last month’s penalised Hereford scorer Arctic Voyage

HORSE WELFARE AT NEWTON ABBOT

At every race meeting held at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are three veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. All three veterinary surgeons have specific expertise in the treatment of thoroughbreds and racing injuries

One vet will attend the Start and then follow the race in his/her vehicle in order to attend, fallen, lame or pulled up horses. A second vet will watch the horses in the Parade Ring and as they leave for the Start. This vet will then also follow the race in his/her vehicle to attend to any further incidents of fallen, lame or pulled up horses. The third vet will be on duty to attend to any incidents in the Stable Yard, or to treat injuries from previous races that have returned to the Stables. If the third vet is not required in the Stables during a race he/she will view the race from the steps to the “Old Press Box”, where they have a good view of the whole track, and are on hand as the horses pull up after the race

If all three vets are occupied treating horses, the BHA Veterinary Officer(s) on duty can be called upon to aid.

Whenever possible, at least one of the veterinary surgeons should be present in the Unsaddling Enclosure after each race

USE OF SCREENS

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse when receiving veterinary attention. This does not reflect the severity of any injury but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around an injured/fallen horse.

MIRABELLO left her low-key debut well behind when fourth in a 7-runner event at Plumpton last month and can put her experience to good use to make it third time lucky. Unflappable hails from a stable that has a good record with its bumper newcomers this season and would have to enter the reckoning if attracting market support. Flora Hobbs was an easy winner of her sole start in point bumpers and also merits consideration.
