OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. NEWTON ABBOT TO REWARD STABLE STAFF
Newton Abbot, the increasingly popular Devon summer jumping track, is to reward stable staff over the 2026 season which starts on Easter Saturday, April 4th.
CEO John Baker said:
“We were thrilled with the support last season from so many trainers up and down the land The work and dedication of stable staff in producing their runners so beautifully turned out has persuaded us to offer a cash prize of £5,000 to the yard achieving the most best turned out horse awards throughout the season.”
Continued Baker “We have a best turned out award (£60 to the groom) in every race and to keep it nice and simple one point will be awarded to the yard winning each award.
We will publish a table in the following meetings’racecard and at the end of the season we will present £5,000 to the yard with the most points.”
“Newton Abbot feel that the effort and professionalism of stable staff should be recognised.”
Fourteen times Champion Jumps Trainer Paul Nicholls and leading Trained at Newton Abbot last season said:
“Newton Abbot provides a terrific service during the summer and offers excellent prize money. This Best Turned Out award is a great idea and if the Ditcheat team can win it my staff will enjoy sharing the £5,000.”

HORSE WELFARE AT NEWTON ABBOT
At every race meeting held at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are three veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. All three veterinary surgeons have specific expertise in the treatment of thoroughbreds and racing injuries
One vet will attend the Start and then follow the race in his/her vehicle in order to attend, fallen, lame or pulled up horses. A second vet will watch the horses in the Parade Ring and as they leave for the Start. This vet will then also follow the race in his/her vehicle to attend to any further incidents of fallen, lame or pulled up horses. The third vet will be on duty to attend to any incidents in the Stable Yard, or to treat injuries from previous races that have returned to the Stables. If the third vet is not required in the Stables during a race he/she will view the race from the steps to the “Old Press Box”, where they have a good view of the whole track, and are on hand as the horses pull up after the race
If all three vets are occupied treating horses, the BHA Veterinary Officer(s) on duty can be called upon to aid.
Whenever possible, at least one of the veterinary surgeons should be present in the Unsaddling Enclosure after each race
USE OF SCREENS
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse when receiving veterinary attention. This does not reflect the severity of any injury but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calm environment in which to make a recovery.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around an injured/fallen horse.
