Newton Abbot Racecard - Saturday 4th April

Page 1

A VERY WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL FROM THE TEAM HERE AT NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE ON WHAT IS OUR FIRST RACEDAY OF 2026 STARTING IT WITH A BANG WITH OUR EVER POPULAR EASTER SATURDAY! YOUR SUPPORT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED AND VALUED, AND WE HOPE YOU ALL HAVE AN ENJOYABLE AND SUCCESSFUL DAY’S RACING WITH US.

Today we embark on a racing season that follows on from us having completed all 18 fixtures last year, which was a great testament to all the team here. As an independent racecourse it is crucial that we maximise the fixtures that we have as well as build and diversify outside of the Racing. The support of all our customers is so important and we thank all of you for your support. A full list of our fixtures this year can be found later in this programme.

Our thanks very much go to our sponsors here today, who are South West Rail Solutions Ltd, our On-Course Bookmakers and the friends and families of Les Drew and Andy Hurtley. We hope they and their guests have a great day with us today.

Look out today for our inflatables and play area for the families, along with our mascot Blaze who will distribute crème eggs to the children whilst stocks last. Hopefuly you will have been able to take advantage of the free pint of Tibute we offered for those arriving between 12 noon and 1pm today. The hugely popular local band The Shrine return after a successful performance last year and they will be finishing off today’s party by performing in the Paddock Suite for an hour or so after the last race. Get yourselves along there, bearing in mind that it will be popular and there is a limited capacity. After Racing you can catch the free Country Bus service back to the train station, take yourself on to the main drive – the service operates on a loop so please be patient and courteous

It’s not long to wait for our next fixture which is on Tuesday 14th April so with the kids still off school we have made it our first Family Fun Day of the season and will boast Bouncy castles, Inflatables, Face Painting, Colouring competition, Human Fruit Machine, Hook A Duck, Blaze will be on patrol and magician Ozzie Dee will be making his first appearance here.

Don’t forget that Newton Abbot Racecourse is open for business all year round for events, occasions, conferencing and much more.

Finally thank you again to you all for supporting us through thick and thin, it is hugely appreciated and valued and we hope to see you again soon. Have a great day.

Best wishes

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

NEWTON ABBOT TO REWARD STABLE STAFF

Newton Abbot, the increasingly popular Devon summer jumping track, is to reward stable staff over the 2026 season which starts on Easter Saturday, April 4th.

CEO John Baker said:

“We were thrilled with the support last season from so many trainers up and down the land The work and dedication of stable staff in producing their runners so beautifully turned out has persuaded us to offer a cash prize of £5,000 to the yard achieving the most best turned out horse awards throughout the season.”

Continued Baker “We have a best turned out award (£60 to the groom) in every race and to keep it nice and simple one point will be awarded to the yard winning each award.

We will publish a table in the following meetings’racecard and at the end of the season we will present £5,000 to the yard with the most points.”

“Newton Abbot feel that the effort and professionalism of stable staff should be recognised.”

Fourteen times Champion Jumps Trainer Paul Nicholls and leading Trained at Newton Abbot last season said:

“Newton Abbot provides a terrific service during the summer and offers excellent prize money. This Best Turned Out award is a great idea and if the Ditcheat team can win it my staff will enjoy sharing the £5,000.”

GENERAL FACILITIES

HORSE WELFARE AT NEWTON ABBOT

At every race meeting held at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are three veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. All three veterinary surgeons have specific expertise in the treatment of thoroughbreds and racing injuries

One vet will attend the Start and then follow the race in his/her vehicle in order to attend, fallen, lame or pulled up horses. A second vet will watch the horses in the Parade Ring and as they leave for the Start. This vet will then also follow the race in his/her vehicle to attend to any further incidents of fallen, lame or pulled up horses. The third vet will be on duty to attend to any incidents in the Stable Yard, or to treat injuries from previous races that have returned to the Stables. If the third vet is not required in the Stables during a race he/she will view the race from the steps to the “Old Press Box”, where they have a good view of the whole track, and are on hand as the horses pull up after the race

If all three vets are occupied treating horses, the BHA Veterinary Officer(s) on duty can be called upon to aid.

Whenever possible, at least one of the veterinary surgeons should be present in the Unsaddling Enclosure after each race

USE OF SCREENS

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse when receiving veterinary attention. This does not reflect the severity of any injury but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around an injured/fallen horse.

PLAY SMARTER

AGREYMIRACLESEEKER has a cracking pedigree being from the same family as Champion Hurdle winner Katchit, so she’s given the tentative vote before market clues for a yard whose bumper horses have generally been performing with credit Numero Ventotto is another noteworthy newcomer given she’s out of a bumper winner, while Guste’s Dance is comfortably the pick of those with experience.
