newtonabbotracing.com

A very warm welcome to you all from the team here at Newton Abbot Racecourse, your support is very much appreciated and valued and we hope you all have an enjoyable and successful afternoon’s racing with us. Our thanks go to our sponsors here today who are the friends and family of Philip Wilson, the friends and family of John Lane SMC Construction, the Torbay Weekly/Clearsky Publishing, the friends and family of Aubrey Loze and Sun Racing. We hope that everyone has a great day. As well as the competitive racing today, we are featuring National Racehorse Week, please go to nationalracehorseweek.uk for lots of information about the way the sport of Horse Racing is coming together to celebrate the amazing stars of our sport. It will be a big crowd here today and we have put additional facilities in place as a result, please refer to the map and the where to eat and drink pages later in this racecard for further details. We hope you were able to take advantage of our free pint of Tribute voucher for early arrivals. We have a courtesy bus running back to the train station after racing, look for the Country Bus service on the main drive. The fun doesn’t stop at the last race today; we have the excellent Sam & The Strings performing after racing in the Paddock Suite Bar which is on the first floor of the main grandstand. Everyone is welcome to come along, but bear in mind the room does have a capacity limit, and it is first come first served. Today sees the start of the second half of our summer season. We have again managed to stage all racedays so far despite all the vagaries and challenges of the Devon weather! After today’s fixture we quickly move on to our brand-new Abba Night raceday on Thursday evening 27th August when there’s loads of fun and prizes on offer as well as a great post racing performance by Abba tribute band Take A Chance On Us! Make sure you get your glad rags out for that one! Friday 18th September once again sees us play host to the finale of the Sun Racing Summer Jumps Championships so lots of stories from across the summer all coming together to culminate in an exciting finale not to be missed. Our ever-popular Autumn Saturday fixture is on 17th October, featuring the high-quality Intermediate Chase and we round of with the Halloween Family Fun Day on Wednesday 28th October with the legendary pumpkin carving making its return. Don’t forget too that Newton Abbot Racecourse is open all year round for events, special occasions, conferencing and much more, check out our events calendar on the website or drop us a line or give us a call if you have a specific enquiry or want to hold your event here. Finally thank you again for all your support through thick and thin, it is hugely appreciated and valued, and we hope to see you again soon (please see our full fixture list later in this racecard). STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

THE AUBREY LOZE MEMORIAL HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

Chairman here from 2002-2013, Aubrey Loze was a dynamic leader at the racecourse with a profound love for the sport. His racing colours were carried to great success by horses with local trainers and no winner gave him greater pleasure than winning here at Newton Abbot! Those Newton Abbot winners included the classy Native Fling. Trained by Philip Hobbs, the gelding was a massive 11-length winner here in 1998. They would go on to have great success together, even making the trip over to Ireland to score at Punchestown in 1999. Aubrey would go on to be named Honorary President of Newton Abbot Races in 2017 and 2018 and this race is run to honour his memory.
