newtonabbotracing.com

A very warm welcome to you all from the team here at Newton Abbot Racecourse, your support is very much appreciated and valued and we hope you all have an enjoyable and successful day’s racing with us. Our thanks go to our sponsors here today who are Edmundson Electrical Cabletech Plymouth, Southlands Care Home, Devondale Electrical, Bayside Signs & Display, the family of Colin Willcocks, Atwell Martin and Sun Racing We have again managed to stage all racedays so far this year despite all the vagaries and challenges of the Devon weather! After today’s cracking fixture we quickly move on to our next one which is on Monday 28th September when we are delighted to welcome another true equine hero in Frodon. Frodon won 19 races in his career accumulating over £1m in prize money and winning at Grade One level three times – the Ryanair Chase, the King George and Down Royal’s Champion Chase. Our ever-popular Autumn Saturday fixture is on 17th October, featuring the high-quality Intermediate Chase, plus Bootlegger’s Turn bring the Party In The Paddock events to a close. We round off with the Halloween Family Fun Day on Wednesday 28th October with the legendary pumpkin carving making its return, amongst lots more family entertainment and fun. For today we see the finale to the Sun Racing Summer Jumps Series, for which a preview can be found later in this racecard with the potential winner of the small trainer award going right to the final race today! Straight after Racing we have a performance by the brilliant Rock Atlantic in the Paddock Suite, please feel free to join in the party, everyone is welcome (first floor bar in main grandstand). After racing you can catch the free Country Bus shuttle bus service to the train station and leaving from the main drive on a demand basis. Our race dates for 2027 have also been announced and they can be found later on in this racecard. Don’t forget too that Newton Abbot Racecourse is open all year round for events, special occasions, conferencing and much more, check out our events calendar on the website or drop us a line or give us a call if you have a specific enquiry or want to hold your event here. Finally thank you again for all your support through thick and thin, it is hugely appreciated and valued, and we hope to see you again soon (please see our full fixture list later in this racecard). STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

2026 SUN RACING SUMMER JUMPS CHAMPIONSHIP The Sun Racing Summer Jumps Championship rewards jockeys, trainers and owners through a points-based competition held across all jump races at RCA member racecourses. The Championship began at Worcester on Friday 22nd May and concludes with today’s finale at Newton Abbot. Points are awarded based on finishing positions according to the field size, as outlined below.

The Championship is separated into four categories. • • • •

Summer Champion Jockey Summer Champion Trainer Summer Champion Smaller Trainer Summer Champion Owner

There is a prize fund of £8,250 for each of the four categories, with winners in the Jockey and Owner categories claiming the winnings for their own personal use or donating them to a racing charity of their choice, while the winnings from the two Trainer categories will go to their stable staff. Presentations for all the Summer Jumps Champions will be made throughout the afternoon in the winners’ enclosure.

SUMMER CHAMPION JOCKEY Harry Skelton will be crowned Summer Champion Jockey at Newton Abbot this afternoon. Skelton has had excellent summer teaming up with his brother Dan who has accumulated a 111-point lead over last year’s defending champion Sean Bowen. Harry will donate his prize fund to the Harry Skelton Scholarship, a mentoring programme he established with the Pony Racing Authority to support young pony racing graduates on their journey to becoming professional jockeys.

1st Harry Skelton 578 2nd Sean Bowen 467 3rd James Bowen 176 SUMMER CHAMPION TRAINER Dan Skelton has been the dominant force in this category, with a 300-point lead over his nearest rival, Mickey Bowen, as he pursues Martin Pipe’s record for the most winners in a National Hunt season. Before today’s fixture, Skelton has already saddled 84 winners this season. He will be awarded the title of the 2026 Summer Champion Trainer this afternoon.

1st Dan Skelton 586 2nd Mickey Bowen 286 3rd Jonjo & AJ O’Neill 230 SUMMER CHAMPION OWNER The Hools & Forces Partnership who have all their horses with Dan Skelton are the Summer Champion Owners for 2026. With their familiar yellow and black silks they have had a strong summer with horses such as Kiwi de Cotte and Glenmalure Flyer winning on multiple occasions.

1st Hools & Forces Partnership 84 2nd JP McManus 57 3rd David Pipe Racing Club 52 SUMMER CHAMPION SMALLER TRAINER This category is open to trainers who recorded 30 winners or fewer during the 2025/26 National Hunt season. For the 2026 Championship, an additional ruling was introduced excluding any trainer who had won a Grade 1 race in either the UK or Ireland during the previous jumps season.

1st David Pipe 137 2nd Micky Hammond 135 3rd Nick Scholfield 134

IN FOCUS CHAMPION SMALLER TRAINER Throughout the summer period this category has been the hardest fought. Going into today’s meeting at Newton Abbot, just three points separate the top three trainers. David Pipe leads the standings with 137 points, followed by Micky Hammond on 135, while Nick Scholfield sits third on 134 points. With four runners at Newton Abbot today, Scholfield has a strong opportunity to overhaul Pipe. If he can gain at least three points on the current leader across today’s card, he will be crowned Summer Champion Smaller Trainer.

David Pipe However, the decisive moment could come in the final race of the afternoon, the 17:30 Sun Racing Summer Jumps Championship Finale Handicap Hurdle. This race is one of seven double points races in the Championship, which have spanned all levels of the race programme. Providing there are eight or more runners, the winner will receive 20 points, with 10 points awarded for second place and four points for finishing third. Both Pipe and Scholfield are represented in the finale, creating the possibility that the Summer Champion Smaller Trainer title will be decided in the very last race of the Championship.

Nick Scholfield
