OFFICIAL PROGRAMME & FORM GUIDE FRIDAY 13TH JUNE 2025

A VERY WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL FROM ALL THE TEAM HERE AT NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE. YOUR SUPPORT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED AND VALUED AND WE HOPE YOU ALL HAVE AN ENJOYABLE AND SUCCESSFUL DAY’S RACING WITH US.

Our thanks very much go to our sponsors here today, Olympus Plant & Tool Hire, the friends of Ellie French, St Austell Brewery, PKF Francis Clark and WCT Tooling Solutions. We hope they and their guests have a great evening. Our best wishes also go to one of our shareholders Chris Camp who celebrated his 40th birthday yesterday having been coming racing here since he was four years old.

Today we have a band after racing in our Paddock Bar (upstairs in main grandstand) and local band The Shrine will be playing their hearts out with their set of floor filling anthems. They’ll begin straight after the last race and it’s free to everyone to attend so do get yourselves along there! The bar will be staying open and pork baps will be available to purchase from the carvery.

We have an exciting season ahead here at Newton Abbot , as we approach the halfway point in our season, with plenty happening on and off course. Please have a look at our Fixture List with its raceday themes elsewhere in this official programme. Next up is our ever-popular Ladies Evening on 24th June where there’s an array of fabulous prizes for our best dressed lady and gent, as well as for best hat, whilst our party season continues with DJ Hayley Blue performing after racing. Gates open at 4pm with the first race off at 5.57pm.

Our Family Fun Day, looking further ahead to 20th July this year, features a mascot race with a very strong and competitive field lining up and adding to all the usual family fun before racing. The Family Fun Series continues to the end of the season with dates on Thursday 21st August and Wednesday 29th October, the final one with a Halloween theme

We look forward to seeing you again soon, remember to book in advance online to get your Paddock tickets for £18 rather than the on the day £20.

Finally thank you to you all for supporting us through thick and thin, it is hugely valued and here’s to a memorable and successful season for all. Have a great day.

Best wishes

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

Wednesday June 4th was another in the long schedule of summer racedays at this thriving Devon track.

With 53 declared runners and with Nicholls, Moore, Snowden, Evan and Christian Williams, Tizzard and Twiston - Davies among those yards represented it promised to be an exciting day.

It was also a day for the youngsters and with a large contingent from Invades and Racing to Schools the atmosphere was rocking, which was not entirely due to the DJ banging out lively music!

The racing was extraordinary and in every race the cheers from the grandstands and course enclosure was deafening and for those that know Newton Abbot you need to be upsides at the last with the short run to the winning post

We opened with a masterly front running performance by Harry Cobden on Keel Strand and thereafter winning distances ranged from a nose, 2 x heads up to a maximum of 1 and a half lengths.

How Sam Twiston - Davies hurled himself and the willing Gore Point to get up on the line and win by a nose will remain a mystery!

The prize money at Newton Abbot is exceptional and well exceeds minimum values. Most races had prize funds of £9000 with a class three handicap hurdle won brilliantly by the Joe Tizzard

trained, Brendan Powell ridden, 7 year old American Land, having a fund of £15000. (he won by a head!)

Also in the news at the moment is the upgrading of weighing rooms and here again the Racecourse have excelled with adesignwhereladiesandmencanaccess their valet from a central area adjacent to both changing rooms and it is beautifully clean (as ex chair of the PJA I was able to have a tour before racing).

I should also point out that for those fortunate enough to own or have a share inaracehorse,NewtonAbbotalsoboasts a superb yet simple owners and trainers facility with a glass of bubbly to welcome you and free hot and cold food throughout the day.

On the way home my Sounds of the 60’s radio was interrupted on three occasions by the well put together GBR racing commercials. If the atmosphere and crowd reaction at Newton Abbot could have been bottled up and used as an example off exactly what these comm portraying would go al to proving point - racin is a great da out with fun for all the family
