Newton Abbot Racecard - Monday 30th September

Page 1

ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR SIXTEENTH FIXTURE OF THE SEASON.

The Racing Industry continue to have many challenges. Summer has been under the microscope. Other challenges are small fields. For so long there have been discussions and disagreements about racecourses are putting enough money in. Most of us can prove we are making a very good contribution towards it.

Newton Abbot have been very productive with Prize Money each season, with good fields on most racedays. We will continue to invest as much executive prize money as we will try to maintain these in the coming years.

We hope all our Owners will continue to support Newton Abbot Racecourse this year and our exciting race programme. We will continue to support grass roots racing. We have increased all race values in Class 5 Hurdles, maiden, novices and mares.

Max prize money £9,000. Other class 5 hurdles prize money £9,500- £12,500.

Class 4 hurdles and Chases

Class 3 Hurdles and Chases

Class 2 Hurdles and Chases

£10,000 - £15,000

£18,000

£25,000 - £30,000

Newton Abbot Racecourse hold Antiques & Collectables Fairs regularly throughout the year. We have 45 stalls inside offering a wide range of goods from silver, China andvintage items. Our next fairs are on Saturday 12 October and Saturday 9 November 2024. Following the success of the Tuesday Flea Markets in the summer we are introducing our first Saturday Flea Market on 16th November where you can have a table inside or sell from your car or van outside. We are asking people to pre book online in advance, as we have a set quantity of stalls and pitches, so be sure to book if you are interested.

Our big Christmas Fayre is growing annually and takes place on Saturday 30 November 2024. This year in addition to our 71 inside stalls and 20 outside stalls we will also be opening our 40 stable Christmas Village with a wider range of crafts and gifts available for you to buy in time for Christmas. Newton Abbot Flower Club are returning with their Wreath Making sessions and we will have Choir 86 to serenade us with their Christmas carols, a face painter, snow globe, mulled wine and of course Humaryn return with their “Rein ponies”, with rides for the little ones on their Shetland ponies.

Our café is open for all our events for you to enjoy breakfast or lunch in between browsing. We look forward to welcoming you.

Newton Abbot has 2 meetings left for the season: Saturday 19 October Wednesday 30 October

We want to extend our heartfelt thank you to our incredible racegoer. Your support and enthusiasm drive everything we do.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Race preview from Weatherbys

The opening race on today’s card is the Weatherbys Stallion Book ConditionalJockeys’SellingHandicap Hurdle, staged over an extended 2m2f.

The Paul Nicholls-trained Silent Revolution heads the weights and the eight-year-old reverts to hurdles havingrunoverfencesoneachofhis past three starts. Whilst a lot of his form has come on better ground, he won a soft ground bumper and the ground was similar when he finished thirdatNewburyinlate-December.He wasrated128thenandifrecapturing thatsortofform, hewouldhavetobe ofinterestoffjust115.

Formerly trained by John Joseph Murphy, Brazos ran three times for Alexandra Dunn in the spring of 2023 andreturnsfromabreakof536days. His maiden hurdle win did come on heavy ground, although that was backinJanuary2021anditisdifficult to be too positive about the 10-yearoldfollowingsuchalengthylay-off.

Dan Skelton runs the mare Presenting Nelly and she, too, was a soft ground winner, at Ayr in April. Disappointing at Worcester earlier this month, she is still quite lightly-raced and was a heavyground winner at this track a year ago, beating a subsequent Listed winnerintheprocess.Skeltonhashis horses in good order and if you can forgive that latest run, the sevenyear-old is probably the one to beat,

in first time cheek-pieces and with conditionslikelytosuit.

Afta Party was a winner on this card 12 months ago

AftaParty was a winner on this card 12 months ago, causing a 50-1 shock in the 2m1f novices’ hurdle, on what washisfirststartforMarkGillard. That win came on soft ground, whilst it was good when he won a Worcester handicap during the summer, off a markof97.Notinthesameformsince, it remains to be seen as to whether or not the grey wants the ground as testingasitisforecasttobe.

Another ex-Flat performer is David Pipe’s Kintaro, who has yet to win in five starts over hurdles. The fouryear-oldranquitewellatWorcesterin June, but thatcame ongood ground andagain, therewouldbeaquestion mark about him acting under very testingconditions.Hegetsa3lbsage allowance which results in him being 1lboutofthehandicap.

Tip Top Tonto is 3lbs ‘wrong’ at the weights.Awinnerongoodgroundfor DrRichardNewlandandJamieInsole at Fakenham in April, the eight-yearold has run twice for Rhys and John Flint, latterly at Worcester where he was a long way behind Kintaro. The remaining trio are much further out ofthehandicapsolookupagainstit.

He may not have finished progressing yet on that evidence and earns the vote to come out on top once more. Investment Manager has built up a fine record at this track and he’s next best ahead of Fantastikas, who’s an intriguing contender on return to action with his yard going great guns.
