ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR THIS AFTERNOON’S MEETING.
Although racing is our main income here at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are many other elements to the business including conferencing and events.
The office team work closely together headed up by Jenny Paton our Business Development Manager who is organising 14 events this year. Our Craft, Gift and Food Fair is a growing event that takes place in the Spring, the Wellbeing Show which this year offered 14 free workshops took place in June and our really big event the Country Show takes place in August. This is a great family day out with entertainment all day and lots to see and do. This year we are delighted that the Sheep Show will be coming along to entertain the crowds.
We also have our annual Christmas Fayre which is hugely successful and this year this takes place a little earlier at the end of November. This year we are extending the event to include a Christmas shopping village in our stables.
In between these events we have our regular Antiques and Collectables Fair. At the beginning of June we also added a Classic Car Show to the event and we had over 60 cars in attendance. New in 2024 we are offering three Flea Markets on Tuesdays through the summer holidays - a great way to off load pre loved items or to just enjoy a wander to grab some bargains and enjoy some refreshments and food.
On top of our own organised events we also host many other major events including the South West Quilt Show, Dartmoor Classic, Stitch Fest and Funtasia Circus - all well established and successful events.
Newton Abbot Racecourse is also the perfect venue to host a meeting, conference or training event and we host these all year round in between events and racing. We cater for small groups of 12 up to large conferences catering for up to 150 people. We also have weddings and wakes on site and offer a wealth of versatile spaces to hire.
We wish all Owners and Trainer with a runner here today every success.
Best wishes,

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

AMERICAN GERRY was a fair winner in the spring and looks the way to go here given he can race off the same mark as when a clear C&D second last time out. Icare Grandchamp appeals as the main danger to Hughie Morrison’s 8-y-o on the back of his good Southwell second. Fontwell-victor Belgarum and the consistent Magic Dancer can both have a say too.

This stamina test promises to suit LALLYGAG, who was no match for the resurgent Bucko’s Boy at Worcester recently but that was a solid effort nonetheless and, down another 2lb, he’s lurking on an attractive mark. Mr Yeats wasn’t far behind the selection in third in the same race and he will be a threat back up in trip here, while Townhill may well have more to offer as a stayer and is also feared.
