ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR TONIGHTS MEETING.
The start of the 2024 season has been a challenge to say the least for our dedicated grounds team here at Newton Abbot. Since the closing meeting of last season, until the middle of April this year conditions have been so bad that they could only get machinery on the track once. However, after the abandonment of our first three fixtures due to waterlogging, and after much hard work from the guys on the ground, things are starting to look up. Over the past few weeks we have enjoyed three very successful meetings, and are looking forward to our remaining 12 cards with great excitement.
Between meetings work never stops for the lads. The track will be mown directly after racing and the days between meetings are taken up with watering (a slight irony considering the deluge we have experienced over the past seven months), repairing the surface, rolling, moving running rail, fertilizing, verti-draining, repairing the obstacles, strimming, even more mowing, and countless other jobs which all go into putting a meeting on.
We are exceptionally lucky with the team we have here at Newton Abbot who are very ably led by Head Groundsman Wayne Hockley. We thank them for their continued hard work and great spirit even through the tough times early this year. The track is their labour of love and we are grateful for the surfaces they provide which give us the entertaining racing that Newton Abbot is well known for.
We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated. We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here tonight every success.
Best wishes,

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Having caught the eye on her recent reappearance at this course, KARANNELLE could be the answer She should be spot-on with that run under her belt, she’s on a good mark and clearly goes well round here. Grivetana is a much-respected main danger following her successful debut for this yard at Southwell, while Mermaids Cave has to be taken seriously in her bid for the four-timer
