ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE FOR OUR FIRST MEETING OF THE 2024 SEASON FOLLOWING THE ABANDONMENT OF OUR FIRST THREE MEETINGS DUE TO THE WEATHER. IT WAS PARTICULARLY DISAPPOINTING TO LOSE EASTER SATURDAY, OUR BIGGEST FIXTURE EACH YEAR.

We would like to thank today’s sponsors - Matt Bailey, Hazel Rogers, and Totnes and Bridgetown Races. We hope they have a great day with us.

Following the end of last season, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements. We have purchased a screen which we intend to utilise for other events at the racecourse. The weighing room has been re-configured and upgraded to comply with new safeguarding regulations. This includes an enlarged valets space, a physio room and warm-up area with bikes and gym equipment, and improved facilities for the jockeys.

We have a new Clerk of the Course in training. We are fortunate to still have the services of Jason Loosemore who will Clerk on racedays and assist Ben Robarts during some of his training. We also welcome Tom Phillips to the groundstaff team.

We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.

We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success. Best wishes,

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Provided his late tumble at Bangor last month hasn’t left a mark, NO TACKLE is fancied to regain the winning thread stepping up to this sort of trip for the first time over fences. The main threat may emerge from Danton, who deserves credit for keeping the winner honest all the way to the line when runner-up at Chepstow recently and now heads over the larger obstacles. Puddlesinthepark can edge out Lightonthewing for third.

This represents a good opportunity for WINTERWATCH to open his account over hurdles. The 6-y-o shaped as though this step back up in trip would be in his favour when fourth in a big field at Taunton and is appealing with a capable amateur booked and first-time cheekpieces enlisted. Handicap debutants Lost In The Mist and Hour Star appear the most likely to make a race of it with the selection, given that Light Em Up Nigel is returning from a 17-month absence.
