ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR THE SEVENTEENTH FIXTURE OF OUR SEASON

We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with us-. Aubrey Loze Memorial, The Par Inn Cornwall, Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers to Follow, Weatherby’s nhstallions.co.uk, Weatherby’s Stallion Book, Weatherbysshop.co.uk, Weatherby’s Handicap.

As part of British racing’s industry strategy, fundamental changes to how the fixture list will be structured, promoted and presented from 2024 have been agreed.

At the heart of this is the creation of a segmented fixture list comprising two clearly defined tiers of fixtures:

Premier fixtures will provide a more readily identifiable top end of the sport and seek to ensure that racing’s best events are positioned and presented to drive increased customer engagement.

Core fixtures comprise the bulk of the fixture list and aim to produce a consistently competitive product, designed to appeal to racegoers and bettors.

Scheduling will be closely linked to recent changes in betting including growth in the proportion of bets placed via digital platforms, whilst also acknowledging the continued importance of retail bettors to the sport.

It is anticipated that, with improved customer insight, there will be further enhancements in future years and therefore this should be viewed as the beginning of an iterative process.

Premier fixtures will be staged in two distinct seasons, programmed on the flat between mid-April and October, and over jumps between November and mid-April. The Premier fixture list will comprise a maximum of two such fixtures on Saturdays, as well as midweek festivals and a number of enhanced Sunday meetings. Premier fixtures will be broadcast on ITV, increasing the number of meetings covered on terrestrial television, subject to contractual discussions. They will have a minimum total prize money offering and include an agreed number of higher-class races. With all races run at a Premier fixture offering prize money above a specified floor, significantly increased minimum values will ensure a boost to race values at these meetings.

There has also been focus on ensuring that racing’s Core fixtures, which comprise the bulk of the fixture list, are supported and strengthened to grow their appeal to customers.

Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the 2mile 5 furlong start.

Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.

We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.

We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.

With the September weather kicking in, it proved to be heavy ground last Friday but that not stop some action here.

Our opener was a contest run over two miles and five furlongs which saw just two rivals head down to post. Outlaw Peter was sent off the 1/4 hot favourite in the newtonabbotracing.com Novices’ Chase but he didn’t blow his opposition, Wa Clover out the water as expected. Jumping slightly right throughout, he made all on his chasing bow receiving 3lb from his only rival, making gradual improvements at his fences as the race went on. He eventually scored by half a length and always looked to be doing enough in the finish. This 134 rated hurdler could have a bright future over fences.

It was twice lucky for favourite backers in the Colin Willcocks Memorial Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle as Gearoid Harney’s 8lb claim proved too strong on Ben Lilly who was previously 0-10 over hurdles. A race over three miles and two and a half furlongs with 3 hurdles omitted, Ben Lilly put his useful Flat form to full affect and built on his third in the race last year

The six-year-old was always to the fore and albeit stumbling two out and idling in the closing stages, always looked the market seemed to get it spot on

though, as the other joint-favourite Honey I’m Good was two lengths in second.

Dan and Harry Skelton got on the board next as Presenting Nelly landed the Devondale Electrical Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, run over two miles and one furlong. Winning over further at Worcester previously may have had an impact on this result, as she grinded out the finish with the market leader Manimole who will have to take pride in her defeat, albeit being at a short price. The pair finished just a head a part, but it was her abundant stamina that got her the victory here on the tough going and the duo pulled a further 23 lengths

clear of the third finishing Nathan Walker

Our fourth race was another one for the stayers’ lovers, run over three miles and two furlongs, which saw another nail-biting finish. The Racing Partnership Handicap Chase proved a tactical affair, but it didn’t come without drama as this three runner field was very tightly grouped heading from home. Frankie Faulkner looked to have the race at his mercy and is another unfortunate loser on the card, as Isabelle Williams saddle slipped before four out and nearly fell off on the run in. This left the gate wideopen for Harriet Tucker who made all in stronger race than when denied over course and distance last time out to score by a short head and justify her short price.

Nolan added success at Newton Abbott as he rode the Germanbred horse

Wonderful Eagle in our penultimate race, the Devondale Electrical Novices’ Hurdle. A previous winner on testing ground over 1m2f in Germany, he is another on the card who used his strong Flat form to his advantage to come home victorious. Held up in last, he made smooth headway to win a shade cosily in the end by two and a half lengths. Willie Mullin’s first ever runner at Newton Abbot, Alvaniy, proved unsuited by the significant step back up in trip and ground and could only finish last of the 4 who finished at 1/3.

Our finale was the Rob Gilbert 70th Birthday Bash Handicap Hurdle which saw Evan Williams eventually come away with a winner after going agonisingly close previously. Imperial Measure was showed that he was capable of winning a race of this nature when a good fourth in a similar contest over further around here. Well backed on the testing ground that seemed to favour him more than his rivals, the five-year-old tanked into the lead and won well once organised from between the last two hurdles in the of usual companion Adam Wedge.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys

We are delighted to sponsor five great races across a card today.

The first race that we sponsor is the Weatherbys Stallion Book Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Handicap Hurdle, and the weights areheadedbyVorashann

Vorashann heads the weights in the opening contest of the day.

The seven-year-old was a good winneratFontwelllastterm, besting subsequent London Handicap Hurdle winner Highway One O Two in determined fashion. He has since switched from Gary Moore to Jake Coulson and makes his stable debut here; he has dropped down tohislastwinningmarkandsetsthe standard.

Absolute Ruler was the winner of a Huntingdon maiden hurdle back in May and has been kept busy throughout the summer. Jennie Candlish’sfour-year-old had a spin on the flat when last seen and this unexposedsortmakeshishandicap debutfromafairmarkof105.

Withtheessentialguidetothejumps now released, the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Novices’ Hurdle

lookssettobeaninterestingcontest with many of these making their hurdlesdebut.

Jamie Snowden landed the prize here last year and sends RogerPol in search of another success this year. The five-year-old showed plenty of potential in bumpers last term, winning twice, and looks a horse to keep on side now hurdling. ColonelWhizzhadjusttheonestart in a bumper last term, finishing second at Market Rasen in May. He was far too keen that day but does holdplentyofpotential.

Prince Imperial is yet to win over hurdles in four starts but has been kept busy on the flat through the summer months. Rated as high as 96onthelevel,hehasnowswitched toMiltonHarrisandmayhavefound a good opportunity to get off the markoverobstacles.

Fantastikas makes his return in the Weatherbys Handicap Chase and, after being unable to win last term, has now dropped to a real tempting mark. Rated as high as 144 in 2022 following a good win at Lingfield, he has been highly tried since and tests calmer waters here.

Dan Skelton’s Jet Plane burst onto the scene with a wide-margin 24

length victory at Hereford last term and is a big, imposing staying chaser. He struggled up in the weights on subsequent starts but gotbackintothewinners’enclosure last time at Ludlow; this progressive type looks to be back on track if his jumpingholdsup.

Course and distance winner

Ben Lilly heads the weights in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Handicap Hurdle and will look to build on his impressive victory here last time. A real strong stayer who will appreciate the testing conditions, he is up 3lbs for that victory, but he did idle out in front that day and was worth more thanthewinningmarginsuggests.

Syd Hosie’s Astroman was back in fourth that day but can get closer to that rival with a 4lb swing in the weightswhentheymeetagain.

Best Mate Dave is not always the mostfluentoverhishurdlesbutwas a good winner at Worcester on his penultimate start and was unlucky not to win again at that course last time, caughtclosehometogodown byjustaneck.

That form has been enhanced with thewinnergoinginagainsince, and he must be a serious player here underTomBellamy.

Astroman can get closer with a pull in the weights.

CoalFire was back in third that day and Peter Bowen’s seven-yearold leaves the impression that the further he goes the better he gets, so can improve with the step up in triphere.

The closing race on the card is the weatherbysshop.co.uk Mares’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, and it looksarealcompetitivecontestwith thefieldcloselymatchedonform.

Caitlin’s Court was a mightily impressive winner at this course back in May, powering home to an eight-length victory. She appeared to be slightly outpaced back at this track last time and is calling out for thisstepupintripsoisaninteresting contenderunderBryonyFrost.

Baby Sham has had wind surgery afterbeingpulledupatCartmellast time, but it is too late to give up on this mare as if returning to the form ofherwidemarginFontwellsuccess inJune, shecangoclosehere.

Lady Berlais is still a maiden after fivestartsoverhurdlesbuthassince switched to the powerful Skelton yard and is dangerous to write off onstabledebut.

PLAY SMARTER

BABY SHAM had excuses on both outings since scoring at Fontwell in June and, after a short break, she’s worth a chance to bounce back and land a weak contest. Lady Berlais is an obvious threat on debut for Dan Skelton and the market should be informative with regard to her chance.
