ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR THE FIFTEENTH FIXTURE OF OUR SEASON.
We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with us-. Colin Willcocks Memorial, Devondale Electrical, Racing Partnership, Devondale Electrical, newtonabbotracing.com, Rob Gilbert 70th Birthday
As part of British racing’s industry strategy, fundamental changes to how the fixture list will be structured, promoted and presented from 2024 have been agreed.
At the heart of this is the creation of a segmented fixture list comprising two clearly defined tiers of fixtures:
Premier fixtures will provide a more readily identifiable top end of the sport and seek to ensure that racing’s best events are positioned and presented to drive increased customer engagement.
Core fixtures comprise the bulk of the fixture list and aim to produce a consistently competitive product, designed to appeal to racegoers and bettors.
Scheduling will be closely linked to recent changes in betting including growth in the proportion of bets placed via digital platforms, whilst also acknowledging the continued importance of retail bettors to the sport.
It is anticipated that, with improved customer insight, there will be further enhancements in future years and therefore this should be viewed as the beginning of an iterative process.
Premier fixtures will be staged in two distinct seasons, programmed on the flat between mid-April and October, and over jumps between November and mid-April. The Premier fixture list will comprise a maximum of two such fixtures on Saturdays, as well as midweek festivals and a number of enhanced Sunday meetings. Premier fixtures will be broadcast on ITV, increasing the number of meetings covered on terrestrial television, subject to contractual discussions. They will have a minimum total prize money offering and include an agreed number of higher-class races. With all races run at a Premier fixture offering prize money above a specified floor, significantly increased minimum values will ensure a boost to race values at these meetings.
There has also been focus on ensuring that racing’s Core fixtures, which comprise the bulk of the fixture list, are supported and strengthened to grow their appeal to customers.
Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the 2mile 5 furlong start.
Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.
We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.
We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.
Best wishes,

com Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase, where market favourite, Ya Know Yaseff, justified the support, winning by half-a-length ahead of Janeslittlevoice. The David Pipe-trained six-year-old was prominent in the early stages before a couple of mistakes which didn’t prove costly She came into this on the back of a comfortable five length victory at Worcester and she produced another strong showing here with Gearoid Harney on board. It was a four-runner race in this opener, with Sharp Note and Prince Cleni finishing third and fourth respectively. It was a much more comfortable victory in the following race with the Syd Hosietrained Way Out cruising to a 10-length success over All The Glory The six-yearold gelding made all and despite a mistake at the second, he soon continued to a fine win for jockey Michael Nolan. The pair went further clear from the last and were never in any danger of relinquishing his lead to the Jonjo O’Neill-trained mare in second. This was a third consecutive victory for Way
Out, having won his last two runs back in May The Galahad Kid finished a further seven-anda-half lengths behind whilst Six Out and Buck Of Maine
finished fourth and fifth respectively
The third race saw another four-runner with Opening Bid completing a relatively comfortable victory over market favourite Investment Manager Trained by Chris Down and ridden by Bryan Carver, the eight-year-old jumped particularly well throughout before going clear from the last. He was never really troubled by the remainder of the field.
Frankie Faulkner and Astroman completed the field in third and fourth respectively It has been an excellent year for Opening Bid,

with this victory being his fourth of the year, including a second success here at Newton Abbot.
Short-priced favourite Slate Lane had no trouble justifying the market support, completing a two-and-a-quarter length victory over Tommie Beau in second. The Emmet Mullins-trained five-year-old took a keen hold in the early stages before going second when four out. He then led before two out and was shaken up by jockey Richie McClernon in the closing stages to ensure a comfortable success. Hunting
Percival finished third, while Presenting Yeats came fourth.
It was a enthralling contest in penultimate race of the
NewtonAbbotRace On Twitter Mares’
Handicap Hurdle. Saddlers Quest, trained by Debra Hamer, found just enough to fend off the danger from Karanelle to win by a neck. The nine-year-old with Joe Anderson on board, was pushed along when a bit short of room before two out. She then went third approaching the last before staying on well to lead in the final stride. It was an agonising finish for trainer David Rees and jockey Adam Wedge in second, but it was a strong showing from Karanelle. Pepsiwithacap finished third.
Another excellent day of racing here at Newton Abbot was then completed with a three-runner National Hunt Flat Race, where Bradford Lady went off 1/3 favourite. However, it wasn’t to be for the Milton Harris-trained four-year-old, who was unable to justify the support, finishing second behind Jukebox Annie. Trained by Claire Hitch and ridden by Ciaran Gethings, daughter of Jukebox Jury went clear the final 100 yards to clinch a three-length victory Who’s Sorry Now finished third.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Narrow preference is for OUTLAW PETER who progressed well over hurdles last term and appeals as the sort to make an even better chaser for the Paul Nicholls yard. Walk In Cover has experience on her side though so seems sure to go well in what promises to be a close-run match.

BEN LILLY showed plenty of ability remains after a year off the track when third at Worcester recently and with that outing sure to have blown away any cobwebs, David Pipe’s 6-y-o gets the vote to open his account in this sphere. Presenting Yeats is not the most reliable of customers, but he can give the selection most to think about, with Honey I’m Good rounding off the shortlist back over the smaller obstacles.
