WELCOME TO NEWTON ABBOT

ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR THE FIFTEENTH FIXTURE OF OUR SEASON.

We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with usAttheraces.com, Britbet, The Ben Oliver Memorial, The Talk Tidy Marketing, Newton Abbot on Twitter, The Racing Partnership.

As part of British racing’s industry strategy, fundamental changes to how the fixture list will be structured, promoted and presented from 2024 have been agreed.

At the heart of this is the creation of a segmented fixture list comprising two clearly defined tiers of fixtures:

Premier fixtures will provide a more readily identifiable top end of the sport and seek to ensure that racing’s best events are positioned and presented to drive increased customer engagement.

Core fixtures comprise the bulk of the fixture list and aim to produce a consistently competitive product, designed to appeal to racegoers and bettors.

Scheduling will be closely linked to recent changes in betting including growth in the proportion of bets placed via digital platforms, whilst also acknowledging the continued importance of retail bettors to the sport.

It is anticipated that, with improved customer insight, there will be further enhancements in future years and therefore this should be viewed as the beginning of an iterative process.

Premier fixtures will be staged in two distinct seasons, programmed on the flat between mid-April and October, and over jumps between November and mid-April. The Premier fixture list will comprise a maximum of two such fixtures on Saturdays, as well as midweek festivals and a number of enhanced Sunday meetings. Premier fixtures will be broadcast on ITV, increasing the number of meetings covered on terrestrial television, subject to contractual discussions. They will have a minimum total prize money offering and include an agreed number of higher-class races. With all races run at a Premier fixture offering prize money above a specified floor, significantly increased minimum values will ensure a boost to race values at these meetings.

There has also been focus on ensuring that racing’s Core fixtures, which comprise the bulk of the fixture list, are supported and strengthened to grow their appeal to customers.

Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the 2mile 5 furlong start.

Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.

We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.

We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.

Best wishes,

newtonabbotracing.com

Harry Cobden and James Owen

have a fantastic record as a duo and teamed up Father Of Jazz opener Sent off as the long odds-on favourite, he proved no match over the two miles and one furlong trip under a penalty for Carrigeen Kampala. Coming here in form, Liam Harrison’s knew her quirks and used them to his benefit, as she recorded her second course victory The front-running tactics and the mid-race breather made all the distance here, as this improving sort scooted clear by 15 lengths to win the first race of the day in style.

Our next race turned into a highly tactical affair with just the three runners, but it was Paddy Brennan who came out on top, in the saddle of Valentino Dancer to give Fergal O’Brien a double on the card. Moving up in trip for the first time, he jumped with much more promise than his market rival Time Flies By. He always looked to be travelling the strongest of the trio over the two miles and five furlongs trip, but nearly threw the race

away again on the line, basically pulling himself up towards the winning post. Shot Tower, who 24lb out of weights, a fast approaching second,

followed by the odds-on shot Time Flies By in close finish.

Fergal O’Brien looked sure to make it 3-3 as he saddled Chief Black Robe, the 2-5 market leader. However, it proved a poor start to the day for favourite backers as the certainty of the meeting was dismissed by the Philip Hobbs & Johnson White-trained Dan’s Chosen. Albeit not being the most consistent type, this was one of his better efforts and he humped well throughout the land a second course ad distance

success. Chief Black Robe had to settle for second, three quarters of a length behind, and the podium was complete with the dual Grade 1 winner Reserve Tank a further 26 lengths back.

Our feature race on last Saturday’s sunny afternoon was a 0-150 race over two miles and five and a half furlongs which saw a competitive field of 8 head to post. The market seemed sure that the well-handicapped Songo would get up there in the finish, but he finished a remote seventh and it left the floor wide-open for Stan Sheppard to steer top-weight Sabastopol to victory. Making full use of his lower and returning six month break, he has a good record when fresh and the

writing looked set in stone from 2 hurdles out. Francky Du Berlais ran a good race to finish three lengths back in second, while the rest were strung out across the track.

Our penultimate race was the Happy Birthday Debbie Moss Handicap Chase over two miles and half a furlong. Kauto The King got the best of the close finish to capitalise on his reduced mark, to score by a short head from Romanor. Prominent throughout, Brendan Powell took the lead early on but was constantly pressed by the market leader El Borracho, who had to settle for third at the finish.

The finale race saw a 10/1 winner as Good Impression came home in front in the hands of Ben Jones. He is starting to build up a good relationship with this C&D and he posted another hurdles win after creeping into contention. Leading approaching the last, he pinged it and by one and three quarter lengths Getaway Tom.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PLAY SMARTER

Provided he’s ready to roll following a break, WAY OUT may well complete the hat-trick. The 6-y-o raised his game when landing a Warwick handicap in decisive fashion on his latest start in May and, likely to be allowed to do his own thing out in front, he could take some pegging back round here. The Galahad Kid is likely to pose the biggest threat given that Six And Out needs to improve a chunk and, moreover, All The Glory isn’t certain to go to post following her odds-on defeat on Saturday.

PLAY SMARTER

SLATE LANE arrives firmly on the up for Emmet Mullins and a 10lb hike in the weights doesn’t look sufficient to prevent him from completing a hat-trick judged on his easy Bangor success. Mr Yeats is feared most in his bid to follow up last year’s victory, with Go Chique and Valentino also in the picture.
