ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR THE FOURTEENTH FIXTURE OF OUR SEASON.
We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with usThe Talk Tidy Marketing, The Racing Partnership, The William Hill Leading Racecourse Bookmaker, The Neil Evans Memorial, The Happy Birthday Debbie Moss, The Silver Blaze Wessex Cup.
As part of British racing’s industry strategy, fundamental changes to how the fixture list will be structured, promoted and presented from 2024 have been agreed.
At the heart of this is the creation of a segmented fixture list comprising two clearly defined tiers of fixtures:
Premier fixtures will provide a more readily identifiable top end of the sport and seek to ensure that racing’s best events are positioned and presented to drive increased customer engagement.
Core fixtures comprise the bulk of the fixture list and aim to produce a consistently competitive product, designed to appeal to racegoers and bettors.
Scheduling will be closely linked to recent changes in betting including growth in the proportion of bets placed via digital platforms, whilst also acknowledging the continued importance of retail bettors to the sport.
It is anticipated that, with improved customer insight, there will be further enhancements in future years and therefore this should be viewed as the beginning of an iterative process.
Premier fixtures will be staged in two distinct seasons, programmed on the flat between mid-April and October, and over jumps between November and mid-April. The Premier fixture list will comprise a maximum of two such fixtures on Saturdays, as well as midweek festivals and a number of enhanced Sunday meetings. Premier fixtures will be broadcast on ITV, increasing the number of meetings covered on terrestrial television, subject to contractual discussions. They will have a minimum total prize money offering and include an agreed number of higher-class races. With all races run at a Premier fixture offering prize money above a specified floor, significantly increased minimum values will ensure a boost to race values at these meetings.
There has also been focus on ensuring that racing’s Core fixtures, which comprise the bulk of the fixture list, are supported and strengthened to grow their appeal to customers.
Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the 2mile 5 furlong start.
Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.
We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.
We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.
Best wishes,

Despite some winds, we were treated to some sunny weather last Tuesday here at Newton Abbot, the official going as good.
Milton Harris got off to the perfect start as Stepney Causeway came home successful in the hands of Harry Reed. He was last of three on most recent over course and distance and it looks to be the same story in the early parts of the race following a disaster start which was his own making. Helped by the fact they went a steady pace; he found his way into contention and showed a good attitude all the way to the finish to just deny the heavy odds on favourite Valentino Dancer
The Joe And Sophie Finally Got Married Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Race turned into a messy affair, with a lot of these caught in interference, but it was the favourite Saddlers Quest who came out successful. Paddy Brennan went agonisingly close to finish runner-up again on Isabelle Bee but 5lb claimer Joe Anderson who just did enough in the finish for Saddlers Quest to follow up on
Uttoxeter win off a 6lb higher mark. She was begging for the line to come to her rescue, and it saved her victory crumbling.
Birthdays
Celebration
Maiden Hurdle Race, over the miles and two and furlongs trip, was battled out by the three market leaders who all came to the fore. It was another very close finish as Littel Flour almost made use of her mares’ allowance to steal the show but was just touched off by the three time Flat winner in Germany Wonderful Eagle. He didn’t look like justifying the market support for much of the race, but his hurdling improved throughout, and he finished best of all.
LAST MEETING REVIEW |MONDAY 31ST JULY 2023

Could be a smart type.
Our feature race on the day was the Andy Hobbs Memorial Handicap Chase in which Joe Tizzard and Brendan Powell teamed up success. The Brocade Racing owned horse, who are best known for their Cheltenham Gold Cup success with Native River, took the race by the scruff of the neck and was bowled out into the lead. Bagheera Ginge contested the lead with the winner, Investment Manager, a few times due to some outstanding leaps, ultimately the seven-year-old galloped on relentlessly to defy a 5lb rise and the 5/2 favourite. Little else got into the race in-behind and it dominant
The Talk Tidy Marketing Handicap Hurdle Race was a nail-biting finish as there was only a length between the first four horses that flashed past the winning post. This was a steadily run race which turned into a sprint for home off the home bend. Clearance came home first and did well to recover his mistake two from home, with Enthused (2nd) Lady Adare (3rd) and Aliomaana (4th) closely following the nine-year-old home.
Our finale saw another Middleham Park runner come home successful as Lelantos scored for the Nicky Henderson stable. Generously priced considering his recent form and leading connections at 8/1, Nico De Boinville pulled out all the stops to make his mount perform under this huge weight and was always doing enough on the run-in. It was an action packed finish yet again as the unlucky runner-up, Saxon Queen, finished just a behind, with Danzini only a neck behind that

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Milton Harris fields strong candidates in PYRAMID PLACE and Songo. The latter will prove popular following back-to-back C&D novice wins and is accorded plenty of respect. However, his jumping will face a sterner test now pitched into handicap company and Pyramid Place, who was at the top of his game in this sphere prior to a low-key run on the Flat, is preferred at the likely prices. In-form veteran Caius Marcius and Sebastopol are others to consider, while Edison Kent is also worth a look.
