ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR THE THIRTEENTH FIXTURE OF OUR SEASON.

We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with usnewtonabbotracing.com, Joe and Sophie Finally Got Married, Heather and Jenny Joint Birthday Celebrations, Andy Hobbs Memorial, Talk Tidy Marketing, William Hill Leading Racecourse Bookmaker.

As part of British racing’s industry strategy, fundamental changes to how the fixture list will be structured, promoted and presented from 2024 have been agreed.

At the heart of this is the creation of a segmented fixture list comprising two clearly defined tiers of fixtures:

Premier fixtures will provide a more readily identifiable top end of the sport and seek to ensure that racing’s best events are positioned and presented to drive increased customer engagement.

Core fixtures comprise the bulk of the fixture list and aim to produce a consistently competitive product, designed to appeal to racegoers and bettors.

Scheduling will be closely linked to recent changes in betting including growth in the proportion of bets placed via digital platforms, whilst also acknowledging the continued importance of retail bettors to the sport.

It is anticipated that, with improved customer insight, there will be further enhancements in future years and therefore this should be viewed as the beginning of an iterative process.

Premier fixtures will be staged in two distinct seasons, programmed on the flat between mid-April and October, and over jumps between November and mid-April. The Premier fixture list will comprise a maximum of two such fixtures on Saturdays, as well as midweek festivals and a number of enhanced Sunday meetings. Premier fixtures will be broadcast on ITV, increasing the number of meetings covered on terrestrial television, subject to contractual discussions. They will have a minimum total prize money offering and include an agreed number of higher-class races. With all races run at a Premier fixture offering prize money above a specified floor, significantly increased minimum values will ensure a boost to race values at these meetings.

There has also been focus on ensuring that racing’s Core fixtures, which comprise the bulk of the fixture list, are supported and strengthened to grow their appeal to customers.

Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the 2mile 5 furlong start.

Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.

We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.

We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.

Best wishes,

newtonabbotracing.com

OUR NEXT MEETING

SATURDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER

Songo got proceedings off to an emphatic start at our last meeting on Monday 31st July

Trained by Milton Harris, the seven-year-old made all and went clear after the fourth. He wasn’t particularly fluent when three out but jockey Harry Cobden asked for a response and he duly obliged, going clear again before two out. He certainly justified his short starting price by winning by an impressive 11 lengths. Donnie Azoff and Spitalfield finished second and third respectively

The following race saw Investment Manager secure the honours for jockey Brendan Powell and trainer Joe Tizzard. The seven-year-old secured his second win of the year with a three-and-a-half length victory in this, the newtonabbotracing.com Handicap Chase. The son of Nathaniel went clear approaching the last and Call Of The Loon had no answer in second. Jony Max finished third, a further two-and-a-half lengths behind Call Of The Loon.

was a much closer contest in the third race of the day, with Clearance holding off Nibras Gold to clinch win in runs, with of those coming here at

Newton Abbot. The nine-year-old trained by Michael Blake was held towards the rear pack in the early stages before a good jump at the last saw him take a share of the lead. He soon led and was always doing enough to fend off the danger from the David Pipe-trained five-year-old. Tom Cannon was on board Clearance, whilst the market favourite Sisterandbrother finished third.

Philip Hobbs & Johnson White enjoyed a fine success in the John Bond 80th Birthday Celebration Handicap Chase

with Dan’s Chosen recording a comfortable three-and-three-quarter length victory over Glajou. The eight-year-old was midfield in the early stages before being nudged along by jockey Sean Houlihan when two fences from the finish. He then led approaching the last before going clear in the closing stages. Enemenemynemo finished a further seven-and-a-half lengths behind Glajou in third.

Market favourite Fat Sam was unable to make an impact on proceedings, falling at the eighth.

The penultimate race of the day saw Caius Marcius steal the trainer Nicky and jockey Hughes. The veteran 12-year-old was in

touch with the leading pack before being shaken up after three out. Hughes then asked the question when leading at the last and the son of King’s Theatre kept on well to fend off the danger from Thirtyfourstitches. Name In Lights came third for Tizzard and Powell.

Another excellent day of racing here at Newton Abbot was then completed with a comfortable nine-length victory for Phantom Gold with Jack Quinlan on board.

The five-year-old made all and went further clear inside the final furlong and cruised to take the honours in this flat race.

Full Monty had gone off as the market favourite but was unable to make much of an impression, finishing fourth. Alright Dai finished second for Neil Mulholland and Harry Cobden and Dontmesswithme was a further three lengths behind in third.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

WONDERFUL EAGLE showed a fairly useful level of ability on the Flat in Germany and should take a fair bit of beating if transferring that sort of form over to hurdles at the first attempt. The Geordie Ginge was collared only in the dying strides by one who’s gone in again since at Stratford, so he’s very much respected, while Little Flour and Climbing need factoring in, too.

Cases can be made for each member of the quintet, with BAGHEERA GINGE shading preference. The form of his effort at Worcester is strong and he shaped like the clear second best at the weights when third at the same course last time. The combination of the drop back in trip and better ground will help, while the addition of cheekpieces may help eke out a little more. Romanor is second choice ahead of Dan’s Chosen, who got the better of Glajou over C&D last time, and Investment Manager

ANDY HOBBS MEMORIAL HANDICAP CHASE

Andy Hobbs, originally from Somerset, began his racing career with David Barrons.

When David left Devon for New Zealand Andy took out his own training licence. He trained briefly in Devon before relocating to Malvern where he trained up to 40 horses at any one time.

In 2013 Andy retired from training and he and his family moved to Cornwall. Among other business interests he ran a small bloodstock operation importing horses from Ireland.

Suddenly on 25th January 2021, whilst out on the yard Andy suffered a major brain haemorrhage and passed away 3 days later He was only 58 leaving his wife Rachel and young daughter Mollie aged 10.

Mollie will be 13 years old on 25th August and this chase is being run in his memory to mark her 13th Birthday.
