ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR THE TWELFTH FIXTURE OF OUR SEASON.

We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with usThe Racing Partnership, newtonabbotracing.com, attheraces.com, John Bond 80th Birthday Celebration, Follow on attheraces on Twitter and Talk Tidy Marketing.

As part of British racing’s industry strategy, fundamental changes to how the fixture list will be structured, promoted and presented from 2024 have been agreed.

At the heart of this is the creation of a segmented fixture list comprising two clearly defined tiers of fixtures:

Premier fixtures will provide a more readily identifiable top end of the sport and seek to ensure that racing’s best events are positioned and presented to drive increased customer engagement.

Core fixtures comprise the bulk of the fixture list and aim to produce a consistently competitive product, designed to appeal to racegoers and bettors.

Scheduling will be closely linked to recent changes in betting including growth in the proportion of bets placed via digital platforms, whilst also acknowledging the continued importance of retail bettors to the sport.

It is anticipated that, with improved customer insight, there will be further enhancements in future years and therefore this should be viewed as the beginning of an iterative process.

Premier fixtures will be staged in two distinct seasons, programmed on the flat between mid-April and October, and over jumps between November and mid-April. The Premier fixture list will comprise a maximum of two such fixtures on Saturdays, as well as midweek festivals and a number of enhanced Sunday meetings. Premier fixtures will be broadcast on ITV, increasing the number of meetings covered on terrestrial television, subject to contractual discussions. They will have a minimum total prize money offering and include an agreed number of higher-class races. With all races run at a Premier fixture offering prize money above a specified floor, significantly increased minimum values will ensure a boost to race values at these meetings.

There has also been focus on ensuring that racing’s Core fixtures, which comprise the bulk of the fixture list, are supported and strengthened to grow their appeal to customers.

Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the 2mile 5 furlong start.

Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.

We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.

We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.

OUR NEXT MEETING

FRIDAY 22ND AUGUST

newtonabbotracing.com TODAY'S SPONSORS

Our Twelfth fixture was opened with the Brendon Soper Memorial Juvenile Hurdle which great battle between the two market leaders.

Hourless put up a classy display under a 6lb penalty after landing his hurdling debut at Hexham, but form was quickly turned around by Ollie Pears-trained Max Of Stars. She gained her second course and distance success of the summer, with the sharp track aiding the front-runners’ tactics, to readily land the opener by one and a quarter lengths. The fillies allowance worked its wonders again and the pair pulled readily clear of the remainder Honey I’m Good made it 2-2 for favourite backers with a dominant display in the Linda And Martin 35th Wedding Anniversary Mares’ Handicap Chase. Easily following up her win at this track six days ago with a 7lb penalty to shoulder, the longer trip seemed to suit even better, and she has seemed a new mare since joining this yard. Held up by 3lb claimer Isabel Williams, she cosily picked off her rivals one by one to lead from 3 out, to eventually landed

paid off in the Kathy Furneaux

Remembering Deano’s Beeno

Handicap Hurdle, again over a staying distance, as Ben Godfrey went pillar to post with Nickelsonthedime. He produced a well-judged ride, although a scare at the fourth last, and secured the deal with a great leap at the last. The Owners Group-owned Sandalwood was a disappointing heavy favourite and was reported to be lame after the race, so Jack The Farmer picked up second place – two lengths behind.

LAST MEETING REVIEW |SUNDAY 23RD JULY 2023
the spoils by nine and half lengths. Brianna Rose picked up second but was no match for the winner on the Another bold front running ride
2 1 3

Our Feature race of the evening was the Racing Partnership Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase over the three miles and two furlongs trip which saw a phenomenal display by the exciting Farouk De Cheneau. Kept in the stalking position behind his market rival Landen Calling, he quickly dispatched his rival two from home in the hands of Sam Twiston-Davies to give him a double on the day This victory made it 3-3 for his new home in the Anthony Honeyball stable and the 16 length success over this longer trip opens a lot of options.

White-trained Sassifield four winning favourites from five with a gutsy performance in the

Novices’ Handicap Hurdle. Stepping down in distance when winning last time out here, he followed up in gritty fashion off a 6lb higher mark. The five-year-old didn’t have the race run exactly to plan, hitting a few obstacles along the way, but should have the ability to go in again with a stronger pace to aim at. Getaway Tom will go down as an unlucky loser only a neck behind, with Cumhacht rounding out the placings.

Our sixth and final race was the Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap Chase over the two miles and five furlongs trip. All the support before the off was for Justshortofabubble who was just narrowly denied on the line again, in a nail-biting finish. Scrumpy Boy, however, picked up the gold under strong 3lb claimer Harry Kimber who just did enough to get home. He clearly Newton Abbot as both successes come here now and it’s good to him go in again at 11.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
