ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR ELEVENTH FIXTURE OF THE SEASON.

We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with us- The Brendon Soper Memorial Hurdle, The Linda and Martin Wedding Anniversary, The Kathy Furneaux Remembering Deano’s Beeno Hurdle, The Racing Partnership, Happy 70th Birthday Steve Robinson, The Sky Sports Racing Sky 415.

As part of British racing’s industry strategy, fundamental changes to how the fixture list will be structured, promoted and presented from 2024 have been agreed.

At the heart of this is the creation of a segmented fixture list comprising two clearly defined tiers of fixtures:

Premier fixtures will provide a more readily identifiable top end of the sport and seek to ensure that racing’s best events are positioned and presented to drive increased customer engagement.

Core fixtures comprise the bulk of the fixture list and aim to produce a consistently competitive product, designed to appeal to racegoers and bettors.

Scheduling will be closely linked to recent changes in betting including growth in the proportion of bets placed via digital platforms, whilst also acknowledging the continued importance of retail bettors to the sport.

It is anticipated that, with improved customer insight, there will be further enhancements in future years and therefore this should be viewed as the beginning of an iterative process.

Premier fixtures will be staged in two distinct seasons, programmed on the flat between mid-April and October, and over jumps between November and mid-April. The Premier fixture list will comprise a maximum of two such fixtures on Saturdays, as well as midweek festivals and a number of enhanced Sunday meetings. Premier fixtures will be broadcast on ITV, increasing the number of meetings covered on terrestrial television, subject to contractual discussions. They will have a minimum total prize money offering and include an agreed number of higher-class races. With all races run at a Premier fixture offering prize money above a specified floor, significantly increased minimum values will ensure a boost to race values at these meetings. There has also been focus on ensuring that racing’s Core fixtures, which comprise the bulk of the fixture list, are supported and strengthened to grow their appeal to customers.

Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the 2mile 5 furlong start.

Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season. We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.

We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.

OUR NEXT MEETING

MONDAY 31ST JULY

newtonabbotracing.com
TODAY'S SPONSORS

Monday saw another excellent day of racing here at Newton Abbot.

Frankie Faulkner proceedings off start with a relatively comfortable two-and-threequarter length victory in the opener with Isobel Williams on board. Trained by Evan Williams, the six-year-old had his second run for Williams having changed trainer from Tristan Hughes in June. He raced in second in the early stages before taking the lead when four out. He made an awkward jump at that hurdle and bumped a rival and was headed after three out. However, he regained the lead soon after and kept on well to fend off the danger from Ryder’s Rock in second. Fortunate Fred went off market favourite but was unable to justify the support, finishing third.

Another favourite was beaten in the following race with First Angel finishing 20 lengths off the winner, Heronord, in third. Heronord made it a quick-fire double for Williams, winning by four lengths ahead of Tikkinthebox with Adam Wedge riding. That success made it the six-year-old’s first win in 24 attempts on the turf, ending a long wait for that honour Heronord took a keen hold early on and

the day with success in the third race, the Fiddy Thornes Birthday Handicap Hurdle, with Thirtyfourstitches. The eight-year-old, ridden by Charlie Hammond, did just enough to deny Eritage, winning by two lengths. It was his first run since April and the break clearly helped, finding just enough to win. He led briefly early on before going clear when four out. Eritage then mounted a serious challenge but was unable to cut the deficit in the closing stages. Pyramid Place was 6/5 favourite but was just under a length behind Eritage in third.

It was a very comfortable victory in the

fourth race, with the Milton Harristrained Call Me Rocky cruising to a six-length victory in the newtonabbotracing.com Handicap

Hurdle with Bradley Harris on board. The son of Society Rock was prominent and led two out and a good jump at the last saw him go clear before he kept on well in the closing stages. Clearance was aiming to make it back-to-back wins here, having won here last month. However, the Michael Blake-trained nine-year-old was unable to match Call Me Rocky Nevendon finished third for Alexandra Dunn and jockey Nick Schofield.

Evan Williams then completed a superb treble in the penultimate race of the day with Honey

was also a for jockey Williams. The seven-year-old won easily, finishing five-

and-a-half lengths ahead of Romanor in second. The daughter of Califet changed trainer from Bradley Gibbs last month and got her first win at the second attempt for Williams. Red Happy went off favourite in this four-runner race but was disappointing and finished over 16 lengths behind the winner

Premiumaccess completed the group in fourth, a further 20 lengths behind Red Happy.

Another fine day of racing at Newton

Abbot was then completed with a surprise. Shakiyra was expected to take the honours, going off at 4/9 but disappointed, finishing last of five. It was the Anthony Honeyball-trained Fountainspinklady who stole the show, seeing off Dontmesswithme in second. The five-year-old made all and increased the tempo over four furlongs out. She was then asked for more from jockey Sam Twiston-Davies and she duly obliged. She kept on well to secure a length-and-a-half victory. Princess Unique Honey Crisp finished third and fourth respectively.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
