ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR NINTH FIXTURE OF THE SEASON.
We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with us- newtonabbotrace On Twitter, Mary Hooper Retiring After 50 Years, newtonabbotracing.com, My Wife Is Lovely, William Hill Leading Racecourse Bookmaker, Sky Sports Racing On Sky 415.
As part of British racing’s industry strategy, fundamental changes to how the fixture list will be structured, promoted and presented from 2024 have been agreed.
At the heart of this is the creation of a segmented fixture list comprising two clearly defined tiers of fixtures:
Premier fixtures will provide a more readily identifiable top end of the sport and see to ensure that racing’s best events are positioned and presented to drive increased customer engagement.
Core fixtures comprise the bulk of the fixture list and aim to produce a consistently competitive product, designed to appeal to racegoers and bettors.
Scheduling will be closely linked to recent changes in betting including growth in the proportion of bets placed via digital platforms, whilst also acknowledging the continued importance of retail bettors to the sport.
It is anticipated that, with improved customer insight, there will be further enhancements in future years and therefore this should be viewed as the beginning of an iterative process.
Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the 2mile 5 furlong start.
Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.
We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.
We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.

MONDAY 17TH JULY

SPONSORS
We were treated to another day of excellent racing here at Newton Abbot with a seven card on Tuesday June.
The opener was an intriguing contest with the Michael Blake-trained Clearance doing just enough to fend off the danger from Enthused in second. The nine-year-o took a keen hold and was pushed along when short of room after three out. The son of Authorized soon went third and was ridden to lead towards the closing stages.
It was an emphatic victory in the following race with Max Of Stars cruising to a 68-length victory over Vitani in second. The Ollie Pears-trained three-year-old, with Brian Hughes on board, made all and went clear from the third. There was never any danger of her relinquishing her lead and it was a marvellous victory for all connected.
Kilcummin was a further seven lengths behind Vitani, with Uncle Matthew, Waitara and Ceejaybe all pulled up.
It was a another comfortable victory in the third race, although not quite the same winning margin! Farouk De Cheneau saw off four challengers in the
iston-Davies, the eight-year-old
prominent in the early stages before joining the leader at the the 10th. Despite being fluent two he produced a good jump at the last and kept on well to secure a near four-length victory over Fat Sam in second. That made it back-to-back victories in 2023 since changing trainers. Kauto The King and Midnight Jewel finished third and fourth respectively. Stormin Crossgales was pulled up before two out.
Philip Hobbs and Johnson White enjoyed success in the EBCS Leisure Giddy Up Novices’ Handicap Hurdle with Sassified winning relatively comfortably by two-and-a-half lengths

ahead of Escobedo. The five-year-old was towards the midfield early on before jockey Michael Nolan manoeuvred him into second approaching the home turn and the son of Excelebration was travelling strongly at this stage. He then led and jumped left two out before running on well to secure the honours. Sassified was joint favourite with Moonshine Spirit, with the latter finishing third.
The following race saw Joe Tizzard and Brendan Powell team up to win comfortably in the Racing Partnership TRP Handicap Hurdle. Name In Lights was prominent and awent second after three out before being ridden when approaching the kept on well a four-andthree-quarter length victory over market favourite
The penultimate race of the day saw Songo justify his short starting price. The Milton Harris-trained seven-year-old, with Harry Cobden on board, didn’t always jump with fluency but soon went clear and was going easily when three out. He completed an 11 length victory over Bala Brook in second, whilst Frankie Faulkner finished third.
Another entertaining day of racing was then completed with Junior Massini cruising to an eight-and-a-half elngth win over Seymour Promise. The eight-yearold made all and kept on well during the run- in to justify his

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PLAY SMARTER
GLORIOUS ZOFF hasn’t looked back since undergoing wind surgery and can make amends for his last-flight fall at Bangor when having the race in safe keeping. For Pleasure took a step back in the right direction when fifth to Fergal O’Brien’s improver at Warwick and rates the chief threat ahead of the reliable Coolnaugh Haze.
PRIZE MONEY
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £349,758 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from May to August 2023.

With the Milton Harris yard going great guns, DANNY WHIZZBANG could be the answer returned to this sphere on an attractive mark and with Harry Cobden up. Given his somewhat in-and-out profile, it remains to be seen if Investment Manager will be able to back up his latest C&D effort, but he is nevertheless feared most ahead of D’Jango.
