ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR SIXTH FIXTURE OF THE SEASON
We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with us - The Racing Partnership, Andy Blight and His Amigos, Newton Abbot Racecourse on Facebook, Talk Tidy Marketing, newtonabbotracing.com, Visit attheraces.com, newtonabbotrace on Twitter.
Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar. We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the two mile five furlong start.
The Racing Industry faces many challenges currently, Summer Jumping is under the microscope as the majority of Trainers and Jockeys want a greater break in the calendar. This will hurt those Summer Jumping racecourses who have changed their business models and others will have to. Other challenges include small fields in races, the cost of transport to get horses to the racecourses, and diesel costs. Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.
We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.
We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.
Best wishes,

Carrigeen Kampala made light work of her 7lb penalty in the first to get favourite backers to a good start. Harrison kept things simple from the front on the five-year-old and ran home a ready winner. There is plenty of stamina in her pedigree and she could well get further when sent over hurdles. The first of our handicaps saw Tommie Beau capitalise on a mark 5lb below his career high mark. He seems to have no issue going on a variety of grounds and is now 5-15 over fences. Favourite Trevada wasn’t as fluent at his fences and paid the price in the latter stages, if he could improve his jumping, there will be races to be won in the near future. Basford had a bit of a penalty kick in our third race of the day and was sent off 1/5 favourite. Jonjo O’Neill Jr was prominent throughout the race and pressed the leader at the sixth. He jumped to the lead three out and despite not being fluent at the second last, he was driven out to victory. He came into the race much the bestlooking horse on paper and duly delivered, there will be more competitive races for him down the line.
Swapped set out to make the running under Nico De Boinville but was hesitant over the first and was headed. He way to the front after the third
and ended up making the running for the majority of the race. His was reduced jumping the 10th and by they got to two out, the race was all but over, as Chief Black Robe powered to the front.
Fergal O’Brien’s seven-year-old was 5lb ahead of the game, despite carrying a 7lb penalty for his success at Market Rasen. He made light work of this field and will no doubt be of interest when he goes for the hattrick.
Sherborne gave local trainer Joe Tizzard his first winner of the afternoon. Sherborne was held up by Freddie Gingell and won rather comfortably in

contrasting conditions to his previous success. Another who will likely be well supported wherever he chooses to go next.
No Getaway was the outsider in our penultimate race of the day. Going off at odds of 10/1 in a three-runner affair Robbie Llewellyn’s ten-year-old raced last of the trio but improved rapidly coming into the straight. The well backed Espoir De Teillee wasn’t the most fluent and jumped right throughout the contest, ultimately costing him any chance of winning. The quicker conditions looked to suit the eventual winner and in winning, he gave his jockey Mr Sean Clarke his first winner under rules.

In stark contrast to most of our other contests, this was an excellent front running ride that produces a nail-biting finish. Only Fools looked like he may well pip the favourite up the run in but Charlie My Boy continued to find extra to hold off the persistent challenge. An excellent final race to round off what was another fantastic afternoon of National Hunt action.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

A useful winner on the Flat, DANCILA made an impressive start over hurdles when successful at Musselburgh in February and was left with too much to do when third at Huntingdon on his latest outing. He can resume winning ways on his handicap debut, with Just The Man feared most after he was only narrowly denied last time. Coolnaugh Haze also merits consideration.

This looks a gilt-edged opportunity for DANCINGONTHEEDGE to get off the mark over hurdles, beaten only by narrow margins on 2 of her last 3 starts and clearly still on a workable handicap mark. The danger could be Rubys Reward, who will be suited by this stamina test and can take another step back in the right direction.
