ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR FIFTH FIXTURE OF THE SEASON.
We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with us- Newton Abbot Racecourse on Facebook, Talk Tidy Marketing, William Hill, The Racing Partnership, Download The At The Races App, Totnes and Bridgetown Chase Company, newtonabbotracing.com.
Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar. We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the two mile five furlong start.
The Racing Industry faces many challenges currently, Summer Jumping is under the microscope as the majority of Trainers and Jockeys want a greater break in the calendar. This will hurt those Summer Jumping racecourses who have changed their business models and others will have to. Other challenges include small fields in races, the cost of transport to get horses to the racecourses, and diesel costs. Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.
We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated
We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.
Best wishes,

Inferno Sacree got the day off to a great start for Nigel Hawke and Tom Buckley
The five-year-o it five wins from his last six starts. He’s become known as a gutsy type and once again proved that to be true when keeping on to win by just over three lengths, after doing all of the donkey out in front. Tom Buckley is great value for his 3lb claim and Inferno Sacree is horse rapidly improving through the weights.
It didn’t take Olly Murphy long to get on the scoresheet, as Oakley Dancer took home the spoils in our second race. She made light work of short priced favourite King Of The Lake to win by six lengths after making all, like Inferno Sacree in our first. She had previously won at Chepstow in a mares’ only contest but showed she is more than capable of mixing it with the boys. The form of that race had worked out well, with the second and third winning, so all the signs were there for a big run. She looks to be ground versatile and is a useful type for the Murphy stable.
Shortcross Storm sprung an even bigger surprise in the next, obliging at odds of 40/1 for Chris Honour and Bryan Carver
The third horse of the day to benefit
from front running tactics, Shortcross Storm was having his second run since a wind operation and it looked had done His wasn’t without fault and
despite making some mistakes, the experienced eight-year-old continued to find pressure to hold off the challenge of Lady Wilberry
Our feature race of the day was a 0-110 Handicap Chase for five-yearolds and upwards. Two miles five furlongs awaited the seven hopefuls, with Investment Manager for the Tizzard’s being sent off favourite. Despite being prominent throughout, the seven-yearold never really picked up and could only manage a fifth placed finish. The race went to Jeremy Scott’s Petticoat Lucy instead, who unlike our previous winners, had been held up at the rear of the field.
LAST MEETING REVIEW |WEDNESDAY 17TH MAY 2023
3 2 4
The mare made steady progress before being shaken up three out to take command of the race. She kept on impressively to win by an eventual six ½ lengths.
Caitlin’s Court had struggled in her previous four starts over hurdles, but this was a much-improved win, despite it coming in a slightly fortuitous manner Clongowes looked to have the race in the bag before falling at the last and Per Vino Veritas was keeping on again before being bought down by the former. Thankfully, both horses were up okay and should be back next season.
Young Buck was an emphatic winner for the Nicholls family, with Olive teaming up with father Paul, to win by nine ½ lengths. The ld did have a tendency to jump his right but never really looked like getting pegged back
and only extended the winning margin up the run in. Our finale saw Edmond give Rod Millman his first winner and Bryan Carver a double on the day. It was also our shortest winning margin, with only half a length separating first and second. Edmond had been knocking on the door on her previous starts, so it was great to see her get off the mark and will no doubt improve for a trip once when she goes over hurdles.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PLAY SMARTER
While BASFORD’s string of runner-up efforts raise doubts about him being one to be taking very short odds about it’s very hard to find an alternative to him in this line-up. If there is one that might shake him up it’s probably Joe Tizzard’s Bala Brook, who showed a bit of promise on the first of 2 bumper starts at the end of 2022.

The combination of a breathing operation/first-time tongue tie worked wonders for SHERBORNE when he sauntered to victory at Ffos Las just over 3 weeks ago and Joe Tizzard’s charge is fancied to go in again partnered by a conditional for the first time.
