ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR FOURTH FIXTURE OF THE SEASON.
We would like to thank today’s race sponsors and hope they have a great day with us- Racing Welfare Mental Health Awareness Week, Alan (Rabbit) Welch Tribute, St Austell Brewery, newtonabbotrace on Twitter, The Racing Partnership, Totnes and Bridgetown Steeplechase, Sky Sports Racing on Sky 415.
Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone some big changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This includes building a new state of the art cellar to ensure the customers have a better experience at the bars. This cellar connects with the three main bars - the Tribute bar, Paddock bar and Thatcher’s bar. We have installed solar panels within the racecourse to help the high energy costs, and created a new canter down for the horses to the 2mile 5 furlong start.
The Racing Industry faces many challenges currently, Summer Jumping is under the microscope as the majority of Trainers and Jockeys want a greater break in the calendar This will hurt those Summer Jumping racecourses who have changed their business models and others will have to. Other challenges include small fields in races, the cost of transport to get horses to the racecourses, and diesel costs.
Newton Abbot will continue to invest in prize money at all classes during this season.
All my staff have been working hard despite the challenging weather during the past month.
We thank you for attending today’s meeting, your support is very much appreciated.
We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.
Best wishes,

The crowds were out, the ground soft and the weather sunny for our last meeting here on Saturday 8th April.
A competitive seven card beckoned, with the day getting off to a fine start with the cosy success of Inneston, who returned a well-backed 4/9 favourite for Gary Moore under Jamie Moore.
A talented five-year-old on the up, the winner had contested competitive races on his previous two starts at Sandown and Newbury but despite his price this was no walkover as he faced the Paul Nicholls-trained Holetown Hero, who himself has some smart form to his name.
Inneston ran out a comfortable winner in the end, despite clambering over the final hurdle, and proved too good on his drop back into novice company Dual Taunton winner Holetown Hero set the early pace, but got done for speed in the closing stages, with the pair finishing miles clear of the remainder. The second race had favourite backers cheering again, with Begin The Luck returning a well-supported winner under seven-pound claimer Bradley Roberts for trainer Brian Barr.
A runner up four times for his current connections, the winner built on the promise of his third on chasing debut merely three days earlier, proving well enough handicapped under his talented claiming jockey A slow jump at the last put him briefly in trouble, but eventual second Man Of The North just didn’t
have enough to overhaul his rival, despite being well below his last winning mark. There should be plenty more to come from the winner who can further over
The success of favourites continued in the third, with recent Plumpton winner Ramo landing the three and a quarter handicap hurdle in of a progressive horse. Apprentice Ned Fox steered his mount to an 11-length victory for
Venetia Williams, and the winner travelled much the best throughout the contest. While the race for the lead changed a few times throughout the affair, eventual runner up Premier D’troice came from the back of the field and could never trouble the winner, despite staying on strongly in the closing stages. The feature contest of the day saw 11/1 shot Fox Pro come home in front in what was a competitive race. The Jane Williams-trained gelding looked in trouble turning in but

favourite Le Ligerien made a bad mistake at the second last and threw away all chance of winning, leaving Fox Pro to fight it out with Nocte Volatus. The two had a good battle up the run-in, with David Noonan galvanizing his mount close home to overhaul Stan Sheppard and Nocte Volatus to win by two and a half lengths, with Knight In Dubai trailing back in third.
Joe Tizzard found redemption from Le Ligerien in the next race, with 1/3 favourite Western General recording a cosy success under Harry Kimber He was dropping back into maiden company from handicap company and took advantage of the ease in class, making to win his first race over hurdles.
jumping stood the test over the final few flights and saw off a challenge from Knowwhentoholdem, who ran with credit and should be breaking his duck hurdles sooner rather
The penultimate race on the card saw Kings Krackertara gifted the race with the fall of Via Dante at the second last. While the winner was lucky to cross the line in front, she was only a few lengths down when the likely winner bowed out and she still had to see off the challenge of the held-up Kym Eyre.
Brian Barr and Bradley Roberts made it a double on the day, teaming up with Pak Army who won the last in fine fashion. He made all the running and was always clear of his rivals, and despite coming into this a 15-race maiden he was totally dominant in finally breaking his duck over hurdles. The switch to riding him prominently worked wonders and he won in a canter.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
