ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE FOR OUR EIGHTEENTH AND FINAL FIXTURE OF OUR 2022 SEASON.

The Racing Industry faces many challenges currently Summer Jumping is under the microscope, as Trainers and Jockeys want a greater break in the calendar Other challenges include small fields in most races, Prize Money compared to other Countries, the cost of taking horses to the Racecourses specifically diesel. Newton Abbot continues to increase prize money as best we can.

We are very grateful to those Owners and Trainers who support Newton Abbot.

We will continue to invest as much Executive Prize Money as we can and try to maintain those levels in the coming years. We have increased all race values in Class 5 Hurdles from £4,300 to £6,500. Class 5 Chases from £4,600 to £7,000. Class 4 Hurdles from £5,800 to £7,500. Class 4 Chases from £6,600 to £8,000. Class 3 Hurdles from £9,100 to £11,000. Class 3 Chases from £10,800 to £12,000.

All my staff have been working in difficult circumstances over the past few years and I am grateful to them for all their support. The groundstaff have been very busy since the end of racing last year We have enlarged and resurfaced the track crossing and built new fences amongst other projects. We have moved our annual members to a larger room and created a new raceday office. For further information on any event at the racecourse for the rest of the year, please visit our website www.newtonabbotracing.com or call in at the general office today.

Like many businesses in the South West, we are looking for staff. We have two permanent staff opportunities, one on the track and the other in the catering department. If you would like to join our team, please call 01626 353235.

We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success.

Best wishes,

It was an enthralling and tense finish to our opening race of the day on Monday 26th September with holding on for defeat Yaazaain by a head.

Theight-year-old was towards the rear of the midfield for large parts and was hampered on the turn after the fifth, but he soon recovered and despite not being at his fluent best over the second to last hurdle, he found enough for jockey Bradley Harris to secure the win for trainer Milton Harris.

Yaazaain started as the market favourite but just couldn’t find that marginal extra to cut the deficit to Sufi as he had to settle for second. It was a completely different story in the following race, with Paris Dixie recording an emphatic 16-length victory in the Trevor Leslie Scheu Memorial Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.

The Anthony Honeyball-trained seven-year old went clear when two out and continued to extend his lead over Wild Wilbur who was the nearest challenger in second. Present Storm was unable to justify the market support and was subsequently pulled up under Brian Hughes. Foillmore finished third but was over 22 lengths away from the rampant Sufi. It was a similar story in the third race, with the 2-5 favourite Hang In There in no danger whatsoever in this three runner race. The

He had a unbeleivable comfortable outing and made four wins on the bounce. Hell Red aiming to make it 2022 but had no answer to the winner Oborne Lady completed the field over 50 lengths behind Hang In There.

Sea The Clouds took the honours in the following race, defeating Star Of Valour by three-and-a-half lengths under a smart ride from Gavin Sheehan.

The Jamie Snowden-trained five-year-old was prominent and wasn’t particularly fluent in the early stages but improved later on and took the lead two out befor staying on well to fend off any potential danger that Star Of Valour

could present. Robert Walpole went off 10-11 favourite but was unable to justify that support, finishing fourth, 18 lengths off the winner. Alnitak completed the top three. Sea The Clouds made it back-to-back wins after a success at Stratford in early September

There was not to be a comfortable victory in the next with The Height Of Fame and Maroochi involved in a dead heat. Maroochi went off as the favourite and was held up towards the rear of the pack She was then shaken up by jockey Harry Kimber and went second two out. She then kept on well was unable to find that little bit extra to clinch the win.

The Height Of Fame made all and went clear after the third but was not fluent at the following hurdle. Her lead heavily reduced at seventh. She made a at the last but on, however she was joined by

Maroochi aty the post. Sevenofus came in third, 13 lengths behind the leading duo. The comfortable victories soon returned in the penultimate race of the day with Romanor winning by 12 lengths ahead of Coal Stock. The eight-year-old went off 11-8 favourite and he certainly justified his support with a commanding performance. He gained the lead after the fourth from the finish and continued to extend his lead over Coal Stock.

The day’s racing was then completed with a one length victory for Getalead. The Paul Nicholls-trained Gaulois was expected to steal the show but couldn’t hold off the danger from the Claire Harris-trained six-year-old

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

While a few of these have already shown a fair level of ability, MULLINS BAY’s credentials are pretty compelling on account of his pedigree, price tag and the top connections that he represents. If the market vibes surrounding this newcomer are positive the hint should be taken. Izayte went down narrowly on his Rules debut at Worcester and he is just about second choice ahead of American Land and Madaa.
