The Racing Industry faces many challenges currently. Summer Jumping is currently under the microscope, as Trainers want a greater break in the calendar Other challenges include Small fields in most races, Prize Money compared to other Countries, the cost of taking horses to the Racecourses specifically diesel. Newton Abbot continues to increase to increase prize money as best we can. We are very grateful to those Owners and Trainers who support Newton Abbot. We will continue to invest as much Executive Prize Money as we can over this year, and we will try to maintain those levels in the coming years. We hope all Owners continue to support Newton Abbot Racecourse this year and our exciting race programme. We will continue to support grass roots racing. We have increased all race values in Class 5 Hurdles from £4,300 to £6,500. Class 5 Chases from £4,600 to £7,000. Class 4 Hurdles from £5,800 to £7,500. Class 4 Chases from £6,600 to £8,000. Class 3 Hurdles from £9,100 to £11,000. Class 3 Chases from £10,800 to £12,000.

All my staff have been working in difficult circumstances over the past few years and I am grateful to them for all their support. The groundstaff have been very busy since the end of racing last year We have enlarged and resurfaced the track crossing and built new fences amongst other projects. We have moved our annual members to a larger room and created a new raceday office. For further information on any event at the racecourse for the rest of the year, please visit our website www.newtonabbotracing.com or call in at the general office today

Like many businesses in the South West, we are looking for staff We have two permanent staff opportunities, one on the track and the other in the catering department. We are looking for Staff for racedays sometimes the day before or the day after. If you would like to join our team, please call 01626 353235.

We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success. Our next upcoming fixture is: Saturday 15 October First Race 1.10pm

Best wishes,

ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF , I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE FOR OUR SEVENTEENTH FIXTURE OF OUR 2022 SEASON.

A sunny but breezy day was the theme of our last raceday, which when coupled with winning favourites made it a great day punters.

The day kicked off with our longest race of the day, an extended three-mile two-furlong hurdle for conditional jockeys. They went a slow gallop in the early stages leaving the back straight it looked as though could be anyone’s race, however once the pace increased, class began to show and Espinator took it up turning for home. Mr Yeats did not have it all his own way and the poor jump of Espinator ultimately put the nail in the coffin for his chances and Mr Yeats was pushed out to victory. Bradley Harris has already ridden seven winners in the 22/23 season and looks to be great value for his claim. Our second race saw six runners go to post, with Time Flies By and Bagheera Ginge vying for favouritism. The latter ended up making the running under Sam Twiston Davies for his father Nigel after his recent success in a Stratford maiden. He arrived here carrying a penalty but saw this trip out nicely, not seeing another rival.

The Torbay Media Novices’ Chase sprung our only real surprise of the day as Adam West and Lee Edwards combined with Noahthirtywored to take victory by an eased down four lengths. Mascat was subject to a lot of market support

his chasing debut and after leading narrowly early on he threw in some sketchy jumping which eventually cost him later down the Empire novice company after was beaten at short

odds on his last start however he couldn’t bridge the gap to winner but was giving him 10lbs. The eventual winner was a four over hurdles and made a winning start to his chasing career He isn’t the biggest at his fences but jumped soundly throughout, no doubt he will go well again under a penalty

Archie Watson has had a good time of it this summer over obstacles and he found himself once again in the winners’ enclosure with Nifty Getaway A winner of her three starts in bumpers, she was well held in a Listed contest back in March but capitalised here to make a winning hurdling debut. No doubt she will find plenty of improvement from this effort and

could pick up some black type later down the line. Lady Jane P was returning from a 245-day absence, having previously shown some useful form in bumpers and then followed it up with a good debut over hurdles. She hit the last hard, which ultimately cost her any chance but she will be winning races in the future. Milton Harris once again found himself in the winners’ enclosure but this time it was regular jockey Mitchell Bastyan doing the steering. Appreciate made his life hard back hurdling when clouting two out, hampering a couple of his rivals in the process, but his class came to the fore to take victory There could be more the short term to come from him and he could well go even further in the future. Good Impression could well come on for the run and looks to be lurking off a dangerous mark. Minella Voucher gave claimer Toby good victory penultimate race, travelling strongly

throughout before staying on well to victory D’Jango showed that there is still an appetite for the game after some below par performances and could well win again despite not getting any younger Our final race of the day saw our shorter price winner for the Bowen family Sean Bowen kept things nice and simple in the bumper to win by however many lengths he chose. Always Busy made good headway turning from home but was never going to catch the winner, who very much was in a league of her own.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
