We would like to thank today’s race sponsors: The Mason Arms, David Incles, Ther friends and family of Pat & Maurice Vinicombe, The Racing Partnership and William Hill. The Racing Industry faces many challenges currently. Summer Jumping is currently under the microscope, as Trainers want a greater break in the calendar. Other challenges include Small fields in most races, Prize Money compared to other Countries, the cost of taking horses to the Racecourses specifically diesel. Newton Abbot continues to increase to increase prize money as best we can. We are very grateful to those Owners and Trainers who support Newton Abbot. We will continue to invest as much Executive Prize Money as we can over this year, and we will try to maintain those levels in the coming years. We hope all Owners continue to support Newton Abbot Racecourse this year and our exciting race programme. We will continue to support grass roots racing. We have increased all race values in Class 5 Hurdles from £4,300 to £6,500. Class 5 Chases from £4,600 to £7,000. Class 4 Hurdles from £5,800 to £7,500. Class 4 Chases from £6,600 to £8,000. Class 3 Hurdles from £9,100 to £11,000. Class 3 Chases from £10,800 to £12,000. All my staff have been working in difficult circumstances over the past few years and I am grateful to them for all their support. The groundstaff have been very busy since the end of racing last year. We have enlarged and resurfaced the track crossing and built new fences amongst other projects. We have moved our annual members to a larger room and created a new raceday office. 1 1 It was another enthralling day of racing here at Newton Abbot to get the week off to a great start.
In the opener, market favourite Tip Top Tonto looked sure to justify his short price when going clear on the home turn to fall two hurdles out. The race was won by one of the bigger priced horses Haloa Mail. The mare was keen throughout and led on the run in after the last to prevail by a nose on the line. Fortunate Fred probably felt slightly unfortunate when the result of the photo finish was called. Trainer Chris Down saw his gelding Fat Sam notch up a comfortable success, winning by thirteen lengths to L’Air Du Vent. The eight-year-old was prominent and was never in any danger of defeat. That result made him the first winning favourite of the day. It was a resounding victory in the third race of the day with 15/2 shot Chapmanshype winning by 24 lengths for trainer Jaimie Snowden. The

eight-year-old gelding travelled strongly throughout 3 and put in an impressive round of jumping. He led on the home turn and soon went clear when approaching the final two hurdles. Al Roc the favourite was the nearest challenger, but he was left far behind. Tulin trailed in a poor third. It was a much closer finish in the following race with the Peter Bowen-trained Shareef Star fending off the danger from Steady The Ship to win by a length and three quarters. The trainer’s son James was on board

the seven-year-old gelding and the pair won going away at the line. Shareef Star jumped slow on occasions before disputing the lead at the final fence and kept on well to take the honours. Romanor the short price favourite failed to fire finishing a five length third. It was to be another success story for the Bowens, this time Sean took the honours. Karannelle was held up in midfield before taking the lead when two approaching the last hurdle. Shaken up, she stayed on well to secure the victory for trainer David Rees. D J Jeffreys trained the seconed Al Muffrih who probably blew away his chances by jumping left throughout the contest. Windy Cove under the guidance of 7 James Bowen
made sure both brothers came back into the enclosure after the race although she was a well beaten third. The card concluded with a Mares’ open national hunt flat race, which featured entries from the likes of Gordon Elliot, Paul Nicholls and Nigel Twiston-Davies but it was Fergal O’Brien who took the glory. Carrigeen Kampala was held up in the rear before making headway on the home bend. Meeting trouble in the run in , she was able to show enough class to still win in less than ideal circumstances. This result came at the pains of the punters who backed the Elliot trained Come On Du Berlais into odds on favouritism at 8/13. The Paul Nicholls trained Justmyimagination finished third.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

SKATMAN went in at the first time of asking over fences over C&D last month and looks the way to go here with more progress on the cards from this fairly useful winning PLAY SMARTER hurdler. Progressive Balkardy has his stamina to prove but is still feared most in his bid for a four-time ahead of the selection’s stable companion Hell Red.
