My first job in racing was in 1972 when I joined the Racecourse Association’s press office, based in Portman Square. When my family moved to Somerset in the late 1980s I worked for the West Country courses as their Public Relations Officer until in 1994 I started work for the Jockey Club (and then BHA) as a Clerk of Scales – a job I retired from in March this year. I have been lucky enough to work at almost all the racecourses in the country and have officiated at all the major meetings –flat and jumping – but my roots have always been with the West Country jumping tracks.
