The Racing Industry faces many challenges currently, not just with small field sizes, but prize money against other countries and the cost of travel for horse boxes to the racecourse to give some examples. We are extremely grateful to all our owners for continuing their support of racing. We will continue to invest as much Executive Prize Money as we can over this year, and we will try to maintain those levels in the coming years. We hope all Owners continue to support Newton Abbot Racecourse this year and our exciting race programme. We will continue to support grass roots racing. We have increased all race values in Class 5 Hurdles from £4,300 to £6,500. Class 5 Chases from £4,600 to £7,000. Class 4 Hurdles from £5,800 to £7,500. Class 4 Chases from £6,600 to £8,000. Class 3 Hurdles from £9,100 to £11,000. Class 3 Chases from £10,800 to £12,000. All my staff have been working in difficult circumstances over the past few years and I am grateful to them for all their support. The groundstaff have been very busy since the end of racing last year. We have enlarged and resurfaced the track crossing and built new fences amongst other projects. We have moved our annual members to a larger room and created a new raceday office. 1 1 A beautiful summer evening at Newton Abbot saw seven competitive races take place.
Joe Tizzard got his day off to a brilliant start at a track the Tizzard’s often have a few winners on. Mascat began his life on the flat for Ralph Beckett but has recently changed trades and after a few unsuccessful tries, he got his National Hunt career up and running in our first of the day. Mr George Hiscock never looked to be in any serious trouble and went onto win by seven lengths to the fourteen-year-old, Applesandpierres. Captain Square obliged in the St Austell Brewery Juvenile. In a maiden that attracted six runners, it was Stan Sheppard’s Captain Square that took home the purse. Warm favourite Hill Station was going the best when three lengths clear and looked to have the measure of Captain Square, however he over-jumped the second last and took a heavy fall. Thankfully both he and Jamie Moore were quick to rise and that left the Sir Percy three-year-old to win by and eased down 15 length victory.

A jumps card wouldn’t be complete without a 3 Dan and Harry Skelton winner. Gentle Connections was well found in the market and Harry was keen to keep it simple on the favourite. The mare was coming in search of a four timer and duly obliged after an excellent front running performance. Miss Chantelle battled on gamely back in second but was only ever playing for second spot with second favourite Belles Benefit. Joe Tizzard fired in his second of the day when Allsfineandandy ran on well under the Harry Kimber drive to pull away from the fast-closing Tarseem. There looked to be

quite a few in with chances turning for home and Allsfineandandy’s stamina was certainly put to the test. He came through it with flying colours and may be even better when he tries a few furlongs further.

Al Roc tried to make it a test for the favourite but the eight-year-old was more than a match for this and won comfortably by an emphatic seven lengths. The final race on the card was also the longest, at three miles and two furlongs. After the day Joe Tizzard was having, it was no surprise to see his runner My Lady Grey go off favourite and despite looking well held coming down to the second last, she had a little

bit of luck when Kennack Bay fell. My Lady Grey was left in front and despite idling she rallied well when joined by Belle Jour to win by a neck and give Joe his fourth winner on the day.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
