ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE FOR OUR EIGHTH FIXTURE OF OUR 2022 SEASON. We would like to thank today’s race sponsors: Mr Michael Denning, St Austell Brewery, newtonabbotracing.com, EBCS Leisure Giddy Up, The Racing Partnership, Attheraces.com, Newton Abbot on Twitter. The Racing Industry faces many challenges currently, not just with small field sizes, but prize money against other countries and the cost of travel for horse boxes to the racecourse to give some examples. We are extremely grateful to all our owners for continuing their support of racing. We will continue to invest as much Executive Prize Money as we can over this year, and we will try to maintain those levels in the coming years. We hope all Owners continue to support Newton Abbot Racecourse this year and our exciting race programme. We will continue to support grass roots racing. We have increased all race values in Class 5 Hurdles from £4,300 to £6,500. Class 5 Chases from £4,600 to £7,000. Class 4 Hurdles from £5,800 to £7,500. Class 4 Chases from £6,600 to £8,000. Class 3 Hurdles from £9,100 to £11,000. Class 3 Chases from £10,800 to £12,000. All my staff have been working in difficult circumstances over the past few years and I am grateful to them for all their support. The groundstaff have been very busy since the end of racing last year. We have enlarged and resurfaced the track crossing and built new fences amongst other projects. We have moved our annual members to a larger room and created a new raceday office. For further information on any event at the racecourse for the rest of the year, please visit our website www.newtonabbotracing.com or call in at the general office today. Like many businesses in the South West, we are looking for staff. We have two permanent staff opportunities, one on the track and the other in the catering department. If you would like to join our team, please call 01626 353235. We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success. Our next upcoming fixtures are: Friday 1 July – First Race 2.00pm Monday 11 July – First Race 1.00pm Sunday 17 July – First Race 1.45pm Best wishes

LAST MEETING REVIEW |FRIDAY 10TH JUNE 2022

1

A beautiful summer evening at Newton Abbot saw a few useful performances in competitive races.

1

Outsider Craan Run denied favourite backers a winning start to the evening with an upset in the opener. Ridden by Jay Tidball and trained by Alastair Ralph, Craan Run made all in impressive style under the seven-pound claimer to win decisively, easing to a two and a half length victory. He showed considerable improvement from an opening run for the yard at Uttoxeter last time and saw off the 10/11 favourite to win cosily. Milton Harris dominated the finish in the next race, with the judge needed to separate Appreciate and Tarseem. There was only a head between them at the line, with Mitch Bastyan galvanizing his mount home by the shortest of margins despite hanging left late to see off Bradley Harris and Tarseem in a photo. The two were held up at the back and made smooth headway between them, with a few messy jumps causing a closer finish than it could have been.

2

Top weight Peltwell proved all class in the third 4 race, which cut up with a few non-runners. Sam Twiston-Davies tracked early leader Kilmington Rose, who set a nice pace out in front and ran in snatches. She didn’t jump well and was well beaten in the end, setting the race up for a close finish between Peltwell and favourite Cool Stone. Neil Mulholland’s charge saw off her rival by a length, winning under the heavy burden of 12st 1lb. Kauto The King hasn’t quite proved as good as his King George-winning

newtonabbotracing.com

3

namesake but he was good in victory in the Racing Partnership Handicap Chase, winning cosily by a length and a half for Joe Tizzard under a confident ride by Brendan Powell. Always prominent, Kauto The King jumped well and sealed the race with a fine jump at the last, keeping on well up the run in to see off Mercian Prince by a length and a half. Romanor broke the hearts of ite backers when beatImperial Joe by a head in the next, benefitting from a fine hold up ride by Mi-

7

cheal Nolan. He made steady headway and was delivered up the run in, getting up in the final strides to provide a welcome winner for Seamus Mullins. Backers of Tim Dennis’ Imperial Joe would have praised Sean Houlihan for his fine ride were it not for the late run of Romanor who relished the long run in. Skatman was the only finisher in the novice chase, but sent off as 8/11 favourite he was sure to win. Story Of Friends lost his action and was pulled up early, and Skatman’s win was all but assured with the fall of Lakota Warrior at the second last, providing Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden with a winner. The concluding bumper saw an impressive win by the David Pipe-trained Tango Arumba, who was strong in the market and made all under David Noonan to win impressively. A £75,000 purchase at the Tattersalls Cheltenham Sale, he won a point-topoint in good style in April and looks a horse to follow for shrewd connections.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PLAY SMARTER

Paul Nicholls saddled the winner of this race in 2021 and can repeat the does with BIRDS OF PREY, who pulled nicely clear of the rest when chasing home a progressive type here last month and this drop back in trip looks a good move. Mascat was disappointing on his latest start in this sphere, but he has since proven his well-being on the Flat and is feared off a potentially handy mark, while Samba Dancer is third choice ahead of Ayr of Elegance.

PLAY SMARTER

This race revolves around PORT O’CLOCK, who went close on debut for David Pipe at Worcester on Sunday and he’ll surely prove hard to beat if allowed to take his chance off the same mark here. If he doesn’t go to post, last month’s C&D winner My Lady Grey will probably be the way to go. Belle Jour is best of the rest.
