ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE FOR OUR FIFTH FIXTURE OF OUR 2022 SEASON. The Racecourse received very sad news last week, when Colin Willcocks a previous Chairman and Honorary President passed away at home. His funeral will take place at Torquay Crematorium followed by the wake at the Racecourse on Monday 6 June. We would like to thank today’s race sponsors: Newton Abbot Racecourse on Facebook, Talk Tidy Marketing, Brain and Gill’s Golden Wedding Anniversary, The Racing Partnership, Download the Attheraces App, Totnes and Bridgetown Steeplechase Company, newtonabbotracing.com. Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This will continue throughout the season. We still have the NHS within the Course Enclosure which restricts some facilities, however the entrance price reflects that. The children’s play area is within the Course Enclosure as well as a picnic area. Drinking outside is allowed anywhere on the racecourse, however with the one criteria that no glass is to be taken outside. If you are in Silks or the private hospitality suites, you will have the option to ask for a plastic vessel. We will continue to invest as much Executive Prize Money as we can over this year, and we will try to maintain those levels in the coming years. We hope all Owners continue to support Newton Abbot Racecourse this year and our exciting race programme. We will continue to support grass roots racing. We have increased all race values in Class 5 Hurdles from £4,300 to £6,500. Class 5 Chases from £4,600 to £7,000. Class 4 Hurdles from £5,800 to £7,500. Class 4 Chases from £6,600 to £8,000. Class 3 Hurdles from £9,100 to £11,000. Class 3 Chases from £10,800 to £12,000. All my staff have been working in difficult circumstances over the few years and I am grateful to them for all their support. The groundstaff have been very busy since the end of racing last year. We have enlarged and resurfaced the track crossing and built new fences amongst other projects. We have moved our annual members to a larger room and created a new raceday office. Like many businesses in the South West we are all looking for staff. We have permanent staff opportunities in both track staff and catering staff. If you would like to consider joining our team please call 01626 353235. We look forward to hearing from you. For further information on any event at the racecourse for the rest of the year, please visit our website www.newtonabbotracing.com or call in at the general office today. LAST MEETING REVIEW |WEDNESDAY 11TH MAY 2022
1
Our meeting on Wednesday 11th May consisted of seven races.
1
Our first race, the newtonabbotracing.com Maiden Hurdle saw short-priced favourite Gaulois justify his market position when just prevailing over a fast finishing Jean Genie. The Paul Nicholls-trained six-year-old travelled strongly leading throughout and a good jump when at the last saw him seal the win when landing two lengths clear, before weakening approaching the line, with jockey Tom Buckley on board to secure Nicholls only success on the day. It was the market favourite in the second who filled the runner up spot when the 9/2 My Lady Grey who bolted up by thirteen lengths, to Joe Tizzard his only winner on the day. Market favourite Wetanwindy travelled much the strongest throughout the race but failed to make any impact when push came to shove. It was a similar story in the third race
2
with yet another easy winner this time a 4 different Buckley was on board, Kieren who dictated the pace on the well supported favourite Diligent returning at 13/8, Chapmanshype was the distant second but this was a step back in the right direction for a horse who was once thought to have a big future. Al Roc broke the streak of winning favourites when battling hard from the last to beat Oxwich Bay, who seemed to have the race at his mercy before a horrendous blunder at the last where

Adam Wedge performed miracles to maintain the partnership. The Philip Armson riden Al Roc was prominent throughout the contest leading a different stages but his game jumping won him the race. There was a popular result in following race, with the Alexandra Dunn trained Kapitaliste who gave Philip Armson his second winner of the afternoon, disputing the lead early on, Armson lost his place after the second

hurdle but got the gelding back in a rhythm, before producing a turn of foot two out and shooting clear. Next up, it was Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Mares’ Open National Hunt Flat Race. Rosy Redrum went to post the favourite but was only just unable to live up to market expectations when finding Kiss My Lucky Egg too strong, the Noel Williams trained filly was in touch throughout before making a race winning move rounding the home turn keeping on gamely all the way to the line. The final race of the card was a match contest between Wotzizname and Smithscorner with Wotzizname seeing off his only rival, despite a few mistakes including a blunder at the last Megan Bevan and her mount remained 45 lengths clear at the line.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

A weakly-contested chase in which PASSING SECRETS looks to have been found a good opportunity to open his account after a run of near misses. Arizona Glory isn’t the most reliable of chasers but is still feared most on the back of his Worcester victory. Chasing-debutante Miss M has been in good nick over hurdles so needs considering too.
