ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE FOR OUR FOURTH FIXTURE OF OUR 2022 SEASON. We would like to thank today’s race sponsors: Racing Welfare and Mental Health Awareness Week, Totnes and Bridgetown Steeplechase Company, The Racing Partnership, Sky Sports Racing, St Austell Brewery, newtonabbotracing.com, NewtonAbbotRace On Twitter. Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This will continue throughout the season. We still have the NHS within the Course Enclosure which restricts some facilities, however the entrance price reflects that. The children’s play area is within the Course Enclosure as well as a picnic area. Drinking outside is allowed anywhere on the racecourse, however with the one criteria that no glass is to be taken outside. If you are in Silks or the private hospitality suites, you will have the option to ask for a plastic vessel. We will continue to invest as much Executive Prize Money as we can over this year, and we will try to maintain those levels in the coming years. We hope all Owners continue to support Newton Abbot Racecourse this year and our exciting race programme. We will continue to support grass roots racing. We have increased all race values in Class 5 Hurdles from £4,300 to £6,500. Class 5 Chases from £4,600 to £7,000. Class 4 Hurdles from £5,800 to £7,500. Class 4 Chases from £6,600 to £8,000. Class 3 Hurdles from £9,100 to £11,000. Class 3 Chases from £10,800 to £12,000. All my staff have been working in difficult circumstances over the last few years and I am grateful to them for all their support. The groundstaff have been very busy since the end of racing last year. We have enlarged and resurfaced the track crossing and built new fences amongst other projects. We have moved our annual members to a larger room and created a new raceday office. Like many businesses in the South West, we are all looking for staff. We have permanent staff opportunities in both track staff and catering staff. If you would like to consider joining our team please call 01626 353235. For further information on any event at the racecourse for the rest of the year, please visit our website www.newtonabbotracing.com or call in at the general office today. We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success. Our next upcoming fixtures are: Wednesday 25 May - First Race 1.30pm Friday 1 June – First Race 1.10pm Best wishes

pace to aim at and went clear when two out before being pushed along to extend that lead. Cannon’s mount ran green when hitting the front but won going away. There was a popular result in following race, with the Jackie Du Plessis challenger Valentino taking the honours, denying Nicholls his third winner of the day with Scatman. Valentino was held up behind the leaders and led at the last and battled hardest in a sustained battle with Scatman up the run in. Next up, it was
Romain De Senam who took the hounors in what was probably the feature race of the day. The David Pipe - trained veteran disputed the lead throughout the race before hitting a flat spot where it looked like victory was out of the question, but the ten-year-old battled back gamely to regain the lead at the last before going on to win by five lengths. The penultimate race of the day saw Sweet Nightingale cruise to victory over Gibraltarian, under a confident Deutsch. The five-year-old was held up and led by a length when going clear approaching the last. Wednesday’s card was then completed with Camembert Electric seeing off all who came to

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

JEAN GENIE and Gaulois possess much the best form on show and Tim Vaughan’s fair hurdler/chaser is taken to gain a deserved first success after numerous near misses. TULIN ran poorly at Wincanton on his latest start in December, but he resumes on a 4lb lower mark and is worth siding with here, in the hope that his subsequent wind operation has the desired effect.
