ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE FOR OUR FIRST FIXTURE OF THE 2022 SEASON We would like to thank today’s race sponsors: The 69 Racing Club, Happy Birthday Tosia and Lily, have a fantastic day, Sky Sports Racing on Sky 415, The Racing Partnership and William Hill. Following the end of the season last year, the racecourse has undergone changes and improvements aimed at enhancing the customer experience for all racegoers. This will continue throughout the season. We still have the NHS within the Course Enclosure which restricts some facilities, however the entrance price reflects that. The children’s play area is within the Course Enclosure as well as a picnic area. Drinking outside is allowed anywhere on the racecourse, however with the one criteria that no glass is to be taken outside. If you are in Silks or the private hospitality suites, you will have the option to ask for a plastic vessel. We will provide over £1million in prize money this year, and we will try to maintain that level in the coming years. We hope all Owners continue to support Newton Abbot Racecourse this year and our exciting race programme. We will continue to support grass roots racing. All my staff have been working in difficult circumstances over the past two years and I am grateful to them for all their support. The groundstaff have been very busy since the end of racing last year. We have enlarged the track crossing and built new fences amongst other projects. We have moved our annual members to a larger room and created a new raceday office. For further information on any event at the racecourse for the rest of the year, please visit our website www.newtonabbotracing.com or call in at the general office today.

We wish all Owners and Trainers with a runner here today every success. Our next upcoming fixtures are: Easter Saturday 16 April - First Race 1.00pm. Wednesday 4 May - First Race 1.00pm. Wednesday 11 May - First Race 1.00pm Wednesday 25 May - First Race 1.10pm The meetings on 4 & 11 May will have one race on each day live on ITV. Best wishes

LAST MEETING REVIEW |THURSDAY 21ST OCTOBER 2021

3

Our final meeting of 2021 delivered 1 an excellent seven race card, that was headlined by the St Austell Brewery Novice’s Hurdle, won by Harry Fry’s exciting Might I. Our first race saw Shantou Sunset win in slightly fortuitous style after Do Ya Feel Lucky took a crashing fall at the last. The ground was extremely heavy after a deluge of rain the previous Tuesday and there were a few that would have enjoyed a slightly sounder surface. Shantou Sunset was probably just losing out in the argument before Tom Scudamore’s mount fell but it was hard to tell who would have won. Thankfully she was up okay but has failed to get her nose in front since that fall. Our second race of the day went to the Tizzard trained Investment Manager. The five-year-old was being upped in trip on handicap debut and seemed to relish the extra few furlongs to win by four and a half lengths. He is by no means the finished article and showed signs of greenness up the run in but had enough in hand to win nicely. Oscars Moonshine had been off the track for

4

just over a year and put in a fine performance after such a long break. He was attempting to give 5 away 16lb and did give the leader something to think about but eventually he tired late on. The favourite Steady Away had proved popular in the market but was unable to go with the two as they quickened clear off the bend. Might I had a big reputation before coming to this race and was the runaway winner for Harry Fry. The well backed favourite, he was quite keen early on but this was a weaker event that his previous runs and

there would be no stopping him this time. He has since gone up in Grade but failed to really make his presence felt and there may be a nice handicap in him before the season is done. Thunder Rock would have wanted further than the two miles two furlongs on offer and has gone onto improve this season with the step up in trip. Phillip Hobbs and Tom O’Brien made it two on the day in our fourth race. He’d won this race off a 13lb lower mark twelve months earlier and was presented with a follow up win when the leader fell. It was carnage in the home straight as Orrisdale, who looked to have the race at his mercy, came crashing down at the last. Kevin Brogan did well to get out of the way and he badly hampered the second Chinwag, who looked set to capitalise. Arian was in the right place at the right time and with a clear passage to the finish line, ran away to win by four lengths. Lady luck was certainly on the side of

Phillip Hobbs and Tom O’Brien! Ten Past Midnight showed improved from after his second last time out at Uttoxeter. The testing ground seemed to bring about improvement and he showed a good attitude to keep plugging away all the way to the line. The favourite had won over further in the summer but couldn’t reel in the eventual winner and was forced to settle for second. Our penultimate race was won in emphatic style by Isla Di Milano, who had fallen back in June when making eye catching headway. He got into a great rhythm and won with his head in his chest after the favourite disappointed. Our final race of the day was won by Milton Harris. Mitchell Bastyan kept his cards close to his chest on the 11/1 shot but cleared away readily inside the final furlong. Milton Harris has had a fine season with his younger horses and has a few nice prospects to go to the races with over the coming months.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
