ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR FINAL FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON. The past two seasons have been very difficult for Newton Abbot with the many challenges during this pandemic. Whilst we have a crowd on racedays, it has not been possible to have the crowd we would like. We still have restrictions with protocols for our elite athletes, the Jockeys, with two metre distancing and the Marquee together with the Weighing Room complex. In addition, we have no Course Enclosure for the remainder of the season due to accommodating the NHS. Lastly, it has not been possible to service all our bars and outlets due to unavailable staff, some with Covid-related issues or other reasons. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Directors, my fantastic permanent staff and all those casual raceday staff for their support during this pandemic. It has not been easy, and has certainly been a huge challenge, but one we can be proud of. I am sure that 2022 will be challenging, but we’re confident we have the team to get back to what we do best. To ensure that every visitor to our Racecourse goes home with a smile on their face and wants to come back to visit another day. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: Weatherbys, St Austell Brewery and Devon Heat. Other main sponsors include Sky Sports Racing, William Hill, The Racing Partnership and Attheraces. Our first fixture next season is on Friday 25th March 2022. Our fixture list for 2022 is available on the penultimate page of this racecard. I hope you have a very enjoyable day with us. Best wishes PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR

LAST MEETING REVIEW | SUNDAY 10TH OCTOBER 2021
The penultimate meeting of the 1 2021 campaign produced sunshine, an expectant crowd and a novice chaser to note on another enjoyable afternoon of National Hunt action. All eyes were on the Aubrey Loze Memorial Intermediate Chase as Paul Nicholls prepared to unleash the highly touted Bravemansgame over the larger obstacles for the first time. Undoubtedly one of the best novice hurdlers around last term, winning the Grade 1 Challow before placed efforts in both the Ballymore at Cheltenham and Sefton at Aintree, the debutant looked to have been given a tricky enough opening task up against a formidable pair of secondseason chasers in Fusil Raffles and The Big Breakaway. However, in receipt of 12lb and following strong late support in the betting, Nicholls’ charge put in a dominant display of jumping from the front to win impressively under regular partner Harry Cobden, beating Fusil Raffles by just over five lengths. The Big Breakaway was making little impression on the winner when falling at the last, but a big cheer greeted the Tizzard’s gelding as he rose to his feet shortly after his untimely exit.

Bravemansgame’s victory brought up a quick-fire double for the Nicholls team following the success of 5 Skatman in the opening British Stallion Studs EBF ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle. Cobden once again steered from the front but was made to work harder on this occasion due to the persistent presence of the runner-up Yggdrasil and his jockey David Noonan, who kept the winner honest all the way to the line for his two-length winning margin. There should be plenty more to come from this son of Mustameet given this effort came off the back of a long break, with the six-year-old currently holding an entry for the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle trial at

four-and-a-half-length success and bring up the double.
Not to be outdone, the next two races went the way of the father-son team of Nigel and Sam Twiston-Davies as Ballymillsy confirmed market support to deny Nicholls the perfect start with his runner-up Blackjack Kentucky in the 3m 2½f handicap hurdle. The pair looked set to battle out the finish rounding the home bend but the five-year-old readily went clear before the last, eventually scoring by just over seven lengths, with the honourable Ramses De Teillee a distant third.
The 2m Follow WillHillRacing On Twitter Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase looked a tough nut to crack on paper with all four entries representing top yards, but it was eventually the outsider of the quartet in War Lord that would prevail on his debut over fences for the Tizzard’s and Brendan Powell.
Closely related to top-class hurdler and stable legend The New One, The Newest One’s first victory under Rules in the newtonabbotracing.com Novices’ Handicap Chase would have given the Twiston-Davies yard more pleasure than most. Having pressed the leaders three out, Sam Twiston-Davies asked his mount for more between the last two and must have been pleased with the six-yearold’s response, as the pair ran on well to record a cosy
Grangeclare Glory may well have won the Brendon Soper Memorial Handicap Hurdle despite odds-on favourite Seelotmorebusiness falling at the second last, but it certainly made life easier for David Pipe’s gelding as he kept on best under pressure from Tom Scudamore to beat the Jonjo O’Neil-trained Rabski. The final race on the card saw German-bred newcomer Iberio justify favouritism for the Hobbs team by beating fellow compatriot Lallygag by a little under two lengths. Both look capable of making their presence felt in similar contests, as well as over timber, in the future. We very much look forward to welcoming you all back to the course in March 2022.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
