WELCOME TO
Welcome to the July Course for the opening day of the Debenhams July Festival. Today is our Ladies’ Day, where world-class racing meets style and elegance. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our headline partner, Debenhams, for their support across all three days of the July Festival. As title sponsor of today’s Ladies Day, we are also grateful for their ongoing backing of our Best Turned Out prizes. Keep an eye out for our onthe-spot prizes throughout the day. I would also like to thank our fixed odds betting partner, Betway, for their support across the three days, and Edmonson Hall Solicitors for their sponsorship on today’s card. Across the season, we would also like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their continued contribution to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, for their ongoing sponsorship of our Owners’ and Trainers’ facility. Already the longest standing sponsor at our premier summer meeting, the Kingdom of Bahrain have supported our feature race, the Group Three Bahrain Trophy, since its inception in 1991. This year once again sees their support extend to both the Group Two Princess of Wales’s Stakes and the Bahrain Trophy. Bahrain continues to strengthen its position as one of the leading racing jurisdictions in the Gulf region and an increasingly significant player on the international stage. That progress was underlined last month when the Bahrain International Trophy was awarded international Group One status, becoming the first Group One race to be run in the Kingdom’s history. The race, which takes place in November, will also be worth an enhanced $1.5 million, further cementing Bahrain’s place on the global racing calendar. The continued development of Bahrain’s international programme reflects the Kingdom’s longterm commitment to the sport. Alongside a growing portfolio of Pattern races and premier events, the Bahrain Turf Series has evolved into one of the most recognised and competitive winter race series in the region, attracting horses, owners and trainers from across Europe, the Middle East and beyond. After racing, we invite you to stay and enjoy some feel-good tunes from Island Sound Collective, who will be performing live for a 75-minute set. Please refer to the racecourse map within this racecard for details of all activities and entertainment. Looking ahead, we have another outstanding card in store tomorrow as the fillies and mares take centre stage in the Group One Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Falmouth Stakes. Tickets for tomorrow’s racing will be available on the gate for those wishing to join us once again. Beyond the racing, I hope you can explore the town of Newmarket—the historic and global headquarters of our sport. From horses training on the Heath at dawn to independent businesses on the high street, it is a unique community where heritage is woven into daily life. We hope you enjoy experiencing the history and community spirit that make our home so special and wish every horse and connection the very best of luck.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS RACE ONE DEL MARO, Point Of Law and Galiyan all met in the Queen’s Vase where the former came off best. Charlie Appleby’s gelding was only beaten a nose that day and with no obvious reason as to why that form should be reversed, he can come out on top. Alderman finished fifth in the Derby and looks tailor made for another step up in trip and even Nil Bua Gan Dua can’t be ruled out with Ryan Moore taking over in the saddle.
RACE TWO York maiden winner Inner City Blues is the real unknown quantity pitched immediately into a Group contest but Charlie Appleby did saddle the favourite to no avail in this 12 months ago, and it might pay to err on the side of proven Pattern-class form in ADAAY OF SCARLETT. Two from two before filling the runner-up spot in the National Stakes and Coventry, he’s still a horse with bags of potential and can gain his just reward. Hickory Lad is next best.
RACE THREE A few to consider and it might be that RED SPELLS DANGER can turn the tables on his York conqueror Thunder Call. Tim Easterby’s charge, like the latter, had been on a steep upward curve prior to that clash on the Knavesmire and a 2lb swing in the weights could allow him to edge it on this occasion. Calico Blue finished fourth in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse and merits the utmost respect as a result, whilst others to note include Sea Cookie and Pilu.
RACE FOUR Nine-time Group 1 winner Rebel’s Romance justified odds-on favouritism at Meydan when last seen in February and sets the standard for the others to aim at with an official rating of 122. However, he might give way to the younger legs of CONVERGENT. Karl Burke’s colt overcame traffic problems to beat Tenability (third) on his seasonal return in the John Porter at Newbury prior to hating soft ground in the Coronation Cup last time. It’s easy to put a line through that effort and it would be no surprise to see him produce a big display to record his second triumph at this level.
RACE FIVE Scommessa Sicura has found one too good in each of her last three outings, including over C&D latest, and she may fill that spot again, but this time behind PEACEFUL CHARM. The daughter of Dubawi cost 2,000,000 euros as a yearling and is bred to be very smart, so it would come as no surprise to see her start repaying that hefty fee at the first time of asking. Madam Secretary finished an encouraging third at Listowel in May and should build on that effort.
RACE SIX It was hard not to be impressed by MORRIS DANCER’s return from 311 days off the track to make the frame in the Jersey at Royal Ascot. It’s noteworthy that he is the choice of William Buick over fellow Godolphin runner Wild Desert and he looks the one they all have to beat. Shayem took the silver medal home in the German 2000 Guineas in May and will give it a good go from the front, while Oxagon is capable on his day but needs to bounce back to form.
RACE SEVEN Shipbourne successfully made it two wins from three starts on his return to the fray at Doncaster last month and has to be taken seriously off an opening figure of 88. The hat-trick seeking Priapos will have his supporters and understandably so, but SPANISH VOICE could retain his unbeaten record at Newmarket. With the most recent of those victories coming over C&D and the form already working out well, Andrew Balding’s colt can defy his 2lb rise.

KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN JULY STAKES The Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes is the oldest two-year-old race run anywhere in Britain with a history stretching way back to 1786, when it was won by Bullfinch. Initially open to both sexes, it was restricted to colts and geldings in 1977. Formerly a Group Three, the six-furlong contest was upgraded to Group Two status in 2003. In its early years, the winners included horses that went on to excel over longer distances later in their career including future Derby winners Gustavus (1820), Orlando (1843), The Flying Dutchman (1848), Donovan (1888), Cicero (1904) and Nimbus (1948). In the time when it was open to fillies, the most significant winner was Sceptre (1901), the only horse to win four of the five English Classics (1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger). Since World War II, the July Stakes has generally gone to horses who have gone on to prove themselves as specialist sprinters. A notable winner was Green Desert (1985), who went on to Group One success the following year in the July Cup and Haydock Sprint Cup before a long and successful career at stud. The best winner of recent years is Advertise (2018), who went on to win three times at Group One level. George Fordham and Sir Gordon Richards are the most successful jockeys of all time with six wins each while Frankie Dettori has been successful five times. Frank Butters is the winning-most trainer with seven victories while among the current generation Richard Hannon leads the way with four successes and Aidan O’Brien has won it three times. 4/12 RAN IN THE COVENTRY
Godolphin, successful in this race 12 months ago, saddled the red-hot favourite Maximized, while the Coolmore team relied on the well-supported Brussels. Both, however, failed to produce their best, leaving the door open for an upset. Charlie Bishop travelled smoothly aboard the son of Without Parole before asking him to quicken inside the final furlong. The response was immediate as Zavateri swept to the front and never looked in danger of being caught. Do Or Do Not also emerged with plenty of credit in second, but he still finished a length adrift of the impressive winner.

SECOND RACE
PROMISE
Rowley Mile War Secrets Reawakened A Place Where Champions Race & Secrets Still Lie Beneath The Turf Newmarket’s Rowley Mile is usually seen at its most electric during the Flat season, when the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas define the sport’s early Classics and the best horses in the world take centre stage. It is a place of speed, pressure and precision, where history is made in seconds on turf that has hosted generations of champions. Beneath that surface lies a second story—one that, until recently, remained largely out of sight.
Anne Alexandre and Daisy Vincent, descendants of those connected to the wartime missions, stand alongside the historic Westland Lysander.
Between 1939 and 1942, the Rowley Mile was not only a racecourse; it became a covert Royal Air Force base. From this ground, 138 Squadron and 161 Squadron of the RAF’s Special Duties operations launched secret missions into occupied Europe. The work was part of Britain’s hidden wartime effort to support resistance networks behind enemy lines. Aircraft departed Newmarket on night flights into France, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, carrying agents, supplies and equipment into territories controlled by enemy forces. These were not routine sorties. They were flown in darkness, often alone, and frequently without navigational aids that pilots could fully rely on. Every take-off carried uncertainty. Every return was earned. For decades, this role remained known only in specialist history. Now, that legacy has been formally brought back to the very ground where it once began. A Lysander Returns To The Place It Once Departed From To mark this extraordinary chapter in the racecourse’s history, a historic Westland Lysander flew over the Rowley Mile before landing on the airstrip, bringing one of the war’s most distinctive aircraft back to its origin story. The Westland Lysander was designed specifically for missions like these. Built for short take-off and landing, it could operate from rough fields in occupied territory, slipping in and out of darkness to deliver or retrieve agents in complete secrecy. The return of the Lysander to Newmarket created a rare moment where the landscape, the aircraft and the history aligned again. The same skies once used for wartime departures were filled once more by the machine that defined those operations. 42
A Story Now Marked In The Heart Of The Racecourse Alongside the historic fly-past, a permanent blue plaque and information board stand at the entrance to the Millennium Grandstand. The installation, delivered in partnership with Secret WW2, formally recognises the Rowley Mile’s role in RAF Special Duties operations. Placed where thousands of racegoers pass through every season, it ensures this story is no longer hidden in archives or specialist memory. It sits within the everyday life of the racecourse itself. A place known for sporting drama now also holds a permanent reminder of a different kind of risk, carried out in silence and shadow. Families, Memory And The Human Thread Behind The Missions The commemoration brought together historians, local families, and descendants of those involved in the operations, including relatives of French Resistance operatives and servicemen who trained at the Rowley Mile. Their presence highlights the immense risks taken on the ground as well as in the air, bringing the narrative back to the people behind it. These enduring family links add another layer to the story, connecting Newmarket not only to wartime strategy and operations, but to individual lives shaped by them. Together, they reflect how this history stretches far beyond Suffolk, into occupied Europe and across wartime networks built on secrecy, trust and courage. For The Jockey Club, this commemoration speaks to something deeper than simple remembrance. It is about the stewardship of places that carry more than one history at a time. The Rowley Mile is not only a sporting venue; it is a landscape shaped over centuries by very different uses, each leaving its mark on the same ground. Bringing this wartime story into public view reflects a commitment to ensuring that heritage is not hidden, simplified or separated, but understood as part of a continuous living narrative. It also reinforces the idea that racecourses are cultural spaces as well as sporting ones, embedded in national memory as much as sporting achievement. We do not just inherit places. We inherit their stories, and the responsibility to tell them.
The Blue Birds bring wartime nostalgia to life, performing for guests in front of the Westland Lysander.
Newmarket Racecourses would like to express its gratitude to the Secret WW2 Learning Network and the Shuttleworth Collection for their invaluable partnership in bringing this history to light. EL CORDOBES 2025 WINNER
THE PRINCESS OF WALES’S STAKES (Sponsored by the Kingdom of Bahrain)
First run in 1894, the Princess of Wales’s Stakes is named in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who became the Princess of Wales on her marriage to the future King Edward VII in 1862. Over the years the race, which is open to three-year-olds and upwards, has been won by some of the very best horses to have graced the historic Newmarket turf. Initially staged over a mile, it was increased to its present distance of a mile and a half in 1902. Isinglass, who had won the Triple Crown in 1893, was the inaugural winner in 1894 while the 1899 Triple Crown hero, Flying Fox, took in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes in the same year as his 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger victories. Rock Sand, the 1903 Triple Crown winner, was another high-class winner in the early years, scoring as a four-year-old in 1904. Lance Chest became the first horse to score back-to-back victories when he triumphed in 1912 and 1913, while another high-class winner was Blandford in 1922. Although he only ran four times in his life, Blandford went on to a highly successful career as a stallion, as did the 1925 victor, Solario. Airborne, the first post-war winner of the Derby in 1946 at 50-1, won the Newmarket contest in the same season, while a young Lester Piggott enjoyed one of his first big race victories when riding Zucchero to success in 1952. The “Long Fellow”, who was just 16 at the time, also enjoyed back-to-back victories on Primera (1959 and 1960) as well as scoring on Apostle (1961), Lord Helpus (1977), Pollerton (1978), Light Cavalry (1981) and Head For Heights (1984). Due to the quality of its winners, the contest was upgraded to a Group Two affair in 1978. Two very good fillies to have won the Princess of Wales’s Stakes are Lupe (1971), who won the 1970 Oaks, and Height Of Fashion (1982). Owned by The Queen, Height Of Fashion was subsequently sold to Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and became one of the most outstanding broodmares of her generation with the likes of Nashwan, Unfuwain and Nayef among her offspring. Unfuwain himself won the 1988 Princess of Wales’s Stakes. In 1989, Carroll House was the winner of the Newmarket contest and went on to prove himself one of the outstanding middle-distance horses of his generation by landing the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp later in the season.

SEVENTH RACE
Given his excellent pedigree/connections, SHIPBOURNE very much looks the type to improve on handicap debut. He’s narrowly preferred to Asmen Warrior, whose second on penultimate start at Windsor has been well-advertised. Newmarket specialist PLAY SMARTER Spanish Voice is another to note in a competitive affair, along with progressive 3-y-os The Joker and Lion of Alba.

CONDITIONS OF RACECOURSE
ENTRY
TO
Management reserves the right to refuse admission to, or eject from, the racecourse any person without assigning a reason. In particular, any instance of unruly behaviour, such as drunkenness, abusive conduct, singing or shouting, shall entitle the Racecourse Executive to expel the offending racegoer without prior notice. Racegoers must abide by any regulations including the observance of designated non-drinking areas. At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”. We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings. But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather. Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible. Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry. We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic. So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.
Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.
EMERGENCY NOTICE In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse. We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times. In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff. They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings.
FEEDBACK We are always pleased to hear from our customers and are grateful for any feedback you can provide about your visit today. There are short contact forms available online at thejockeyclub.co.uk/ newmarket and we value your comments.
THE COURSE IS FOR HORSES Please keep off the track. The track is for horses, their jockeys and stable staff, please keep them and yourselves safe by remaining inside the barriers. Anyone trespassing on the track will be: Liable to arrest and prosecution; Ejected immediately; Banned from all future Newmarket race meetings; May face a nationwide racecourse ban.
HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTICE The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. We would request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing area and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that we do have a first aid room. Should anyone require any assistance please speak to the nearest steward.

HBLB PRIZE MONEY The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prizemoney for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry.
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses deliver these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
