THURSDAY 16 APRIL 2026

As we welcome you to Day Three of the Betway Craven Meeting on the Rowley Mile, we arrive at a truly pivotal moment in this early part of the Flat season. The anticipation that has been building all week now centres on one of the most significant trial races of the spring.
Today we are proud to host the Betway Craven Stakes, a race steeped in history and recognised as one of the leading trials for the Betfred 2,000 Guineas. It has long been a platform for emerging stars, with many past winners progressing to claim Group 1 honours later in the season Last year’s winner, the ever-popular Field Of Gold, captured the imagination here before going on to further top-level success - a perfect example of the calibre of horse this race so often reveals.
The Betway Craven Stakes consistently provides invaluable clues for the Classic picture ahead, and this afternoon’s renewal promises to be another compelling chapter. For connections, it is a crucial stepping stone; for racegoers, it is an opportunity to witness potential champions at an early stage of their three-year-old campaigns.
There is a wonderful atmosphere across the Rowley Mile as the meeting reaches its climax - a sense of excitement and expectation that defines this fixture each spring. Whether you are here to identify a Guineas contender, support your connections, or simply enjoy a superb afternoon of racing, we are delighted to share it with you.
We would like to thank Betway, ZYN, the EBF and Rossdales for their kind sponsorship of today’s card. We would also like to thank Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, for their continued sponsorship of our Owners’ and Trainers’ facility.
On behalf of everyone at Newmarket Racecourses, I wish all owners, trainers and jockeys the very best of luck today. Thank you to our loyal racegoers for your valued support throughout the week - we hope you enjoy a memorable finale to the Betway Craven Meeting here on the Rowley Mile
Best wishes,
Sophie Able Newmarket Racecourses and International Director

Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race.
Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

PLAY SMARTER
SOVEREIGN SPELL had a lot to spare in a Wolverhampton maiden last month. The fourth in that race won last week and the handicapper could have been lenient in leaving this Invincible Spirit colt’s mark unchanged. Fellow Wolverhampton maiden winner Albaydaa should have more to offer this season and is second choice ahead of Treanmor and First Legion, who shaped well in a strong York nursery in his previous handicap

This looks a good Craven. HANKELOW returns to the scene of his Group 3 success last autumn and might be able to get the better of Futurity winner Hawk Mountain, who may need further than 1m this season when the ground isn’t riding testing Unbeaten pair Avicenna, who gained a narrow verdict over the selection in a 7f Doncaster Listed race last year, and Hidden Force are other fascinating contenders.

At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.
We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather. Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible.
Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry.
We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.
Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.
In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times. In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings
We are always pleased to hear from our customers and are grateful for any feedback you can provide about your visit today. There are short contact forms available online at thejockeyclub.co.uk/ newmarket and we value your comments
Please keep off the track. The track is for horses, their jockeys and stable staff, please keep them and yourselves safe by remaining inside the barriers. Anyone trespassing on the track will be: Liable to arrest and prosecution; Ejected immediately; Banned from all future Newmarket race meetings; May face a nationwide racecourse ban.
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirementswhilstyouareatNewmarket Racecourses. We would request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing area and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that we do have a first aid room Should anyone require any assistance please speak to the nearest steward
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained Flash photography is not permitted anywhere in the Parade Ring or Winner’s Enclosure areas, or anywhere in the close vicinity of horses.

The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £1,207,590 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 15th September to 31st December 2025
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
