On behalf of everyone at Betfred I would like to wish you a very warm welcome to Newmarket for The Betfred Guineas Festival.
Last year Betfred became the first ever company to sponsor all five British Classics, and I’m delighted to be supporting all five races once again
British horse racing is undoubtedly the best in the world, and I will indeed be a very proud spectator this weekend here at Newmarket
As well as putting the British Classics back on the map, I also want to reinvigorate the Triple Crown and therefore, once again, I am offering a two-million-pound bonus if any horse can win this year’s Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred Derby and the Betfred St Leger
Fifty-six years has been far too long to wait for a repeat of Nijinsky’s outstanding feat.
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who helps make these days so special, the management and staff of Newmarket Racecourse, who have made Betfred feel so welcome, Jockey Club Racecourses, ITV Racing, Racing TV, and never forgetting you, the racegoer.
I hope you all win a few quid off the bookies but most importantly, have a fantastic day and enjoy the 2026 Betfred Guineas Festival
Enjoy the racing and be lucky.
Fred

Welcome back to the Rowley Mile for day two of the Betfred Guineas Festival. We’re looking forward to another fantastic day of top-class racing and entertainment off the track.
I would like to begin by thanking our sponsor, Fred Done and all the team at Betfred, for their generous support across all three days of the Festival We are excited to see the Betfred Triple Crown Bonus return for 2026, with £2 million on offer to anyone whose horse wins the Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred Derby and Betfred St Leger.
We are also extremely grateful to oddschecker, World Pool and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Turners, The National Stud, Boodles, and Air Charter Service for their valued support of today’s racecard Throughout the season, we extend our thanks to the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money, and to Al Basti Equiworld for their continued support of our Owners and Trainers facility.
This afternoon features nine races and is headlined by the Group One Betfred 2000 Guineas, the first Classic of the season Run over a straight mile, this prestigious contest has been won by legends including Frankel, Sea The Stars and Nashwan.
Away from the racing, there is plenty of entertainment to enjoy around the course. Racegoers can take advantage of a wide variety of food and drink, along with familyfriendly activities in the Garden Enclosure The Betfred Sports Zone will feature live darts throughout the day with Keith Deller, Colin Lloyd and Paul Wilson, alongside multi-sport simulators.
After racing, stay on for Shuffle, who will deliver a 75-minute, high-energy set of funk, pop and soul on the Hyperion Lawn Expect feel-good anthems, mash-ups and dancefloor favourites.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, the Festival concludes with the Betfred 1000 Guineas and another outstanding day of racing and entertainment. Tickets are still available online and at the gate
We hope you have a wonderful day here at Newmarket and wish all runners and their connections the very best of luck

YEARLING horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.
William Haggas has won three of the last seven runnings of this race and is represented by SKY MAJESTY in 2026, already a Group 2 winner and last seen finishing 10th to Asfoora in the Prix de l’Abbaye in October. If she is ready to roll on her first start of the season, the four-year-old could get the better of Flora Of Bermuda, who is rated 2lb her superior but yet to win on her seasonal return, leaving Rosy Affair for third
DOUBLE RUSH is hard to oppose despite this being a competitive handicap on paper He returned to action over C&D in mid-April with an impressive success by close to five lengths, and a 5lb penalty here leaves him 8lb well in at the weights compared to future contests. Addison Grey is due to go up 2lb after finishing a head second at Newbury and looks his biggest rival, followed by Robert Cowell’s Jakajaro
Alcarath is lightly raced for a four-year-old with just the four starts and is expected to have more to offer, but he might have to give way to BULLET POINT A winner of both his starts at Newmarket, he returns after going over to Australia when not disgraced in November and the five-year-old is more than capable of defying top-weight Mister Winston made all to win here in April but he may be caught late on carrying a 5lb penalty
Asfoora debuts for a new yard with solid claims. She landed a couple of Group 1 sprints last year, including the Nunthorpe at York, where AIN’T NOBODY finished runner-up at a massive price. However, the latter reopposes on more favourable terms and Ryan Moore’s presence suggests a bold bid is anticipated. Rumstar won last year’s renewal on his seasonal return and can’t be left out of calculations, while Jm Jungle won a Group 2 at Goodwood last term and Beckford’s Folly is another worth a second look.
Narrowly beaten in the National Stakes and the Dewhurst, both good trials for this, GSTAAD ticks plenty of boxes. The form of his second in the Dewhurst here has held up particularly well, given the Ballydoyle colt had Distant Storm back in third, with last month’s Craven winner Oxagon and the Greenham winner Alparslan further behind. Bow Echo puts his unbeaten record on the line having ended last season with a victory in the Royal Lodge over C&D. George Boughey’s hope is a solid option, while King’s Trail landed the same conditions race at Kempton as the 2024 winner Notable Speech and he could also prove competitive.
SOVEREIGN SPELL looks a sprinter on the upgrade. The son of Invincible Spirit opened his account at Wolverhampton prior to landing a competitive sprint over C&D last month and a 6lb rise may not be enough to halt his good progress Advertised finished a respectable second to the selection and will likely finish thereabouts once again, while there was little between Comical Point and Ten Carat Harry at Wolverhampton, where they finished third and fourth respectively
BELLUM JUSTUM benefitted from his seasonal reappearance to go on and win the Jockey Club Stakes (over C&D) at last year’s Guineas meeting. In need of the run when fifth in the John Porter at Newbury a fortnight ago, he can emulate the feat with his sights lowered on his first ever try in a handicap. Nightime Dancer also drops in class and his younger legs can carry him into serious contention on these terms. The low-mileage Gamrai is likely to be popular after winning readily over 1m3f at Kempton. However, he’s back on turf off 9lb higher and has another furlong to tackle
Stellar Vision and SIERRA SANDS were third and fourth in a similar event over C&D last month and it would come as no surprise to see the latter turn the tables now he has a recent run under his belt and is armed with a 1lb pull Nanoscience made a successful return in a maiden at Kempton and the Andrew Balding-trained filly may be the biggest danger to the selection debuting in a handicap off a feasible rating Thaluna and Lohoobb are other notable options to consider.
This is a real conundrum and cases can be stated for many The hat-trick seeking Man Of La Mancha, Redcar winner Skipper and I Still Have Faith are just a trio of live contenders based on their peak efforts However, there could be some value to had with EARL OF ROCHESTER, who was well fancied when second to Gamrai (a leading fancy engaged in the 4:45 here) when last seen Picked up for 30,000gns after that effort, this low-milage son of Dubawi could be a surprise package from 1lb lower.

The first race today, the Oddschecker Ellen Chaloner Stakes, formerly the Kilvington Stakes is named after someone many racegoers might not be aware of
Ellen Chaloner was the first woman trainer in Britian which she became in 1886 following the death of her husband Tom, a ten time Classic winning jockey who also trained Scot Free to win the 1884 2000 Guineas
Ellen, who was born in Middleham in 1846, was steeped in racing. Her father John Osborne snr was a trainer and her brother John Osborne jnr rode twelve Classic winners including the 1869 Derby on Pretender Ellen’s brother rode the winner of the 2000 Guineas six times, the last in 1888 when aged 55
Stepping up to replace her husband, Ellen trained from Osborne House, Newmarket where Group 1 winning trainer Sir Mark Prescott now trains from A remarkable lady Ellen ran a family of seven, six boys and girl and trained horses between 1886 and 1894
Her biggest achievement came in 1887 when her filly Jersey Lily, who had run unplaced in that year’s Oaks won the Triennial Stakes at Royal Ascot, now the Jersey Stakes, to become the first woman to train a winner at the Royal meeting. Ellen’s son George rode the filly. George missed a Derby victory coming 2nd in 1895 and 3rd in 1894
Ellen died in March 1944 aged 98 and was closely associated with the racing scene in Newmarket all her life
Until recently Ellen was buried in an unmarked grave in Newmarket cemetery, across the road from the Rowley Mile course, but following a campaign by members of her family, led by Marietta Krikhaar, Ellen’s great granddaughter, and supported by the Jockey Club, a beautifully designed headstone recognising the trailblazing trainer was erected in October 2023.
A ceremony to unveil two headstones for Ellen, Tom, and members of her family on 21st October was attended by Simon Bailey, the National Chaplain to Horse Racing, Sir Mark Prescott, and many family members
Members of Ellen’s family are at the races today to celebrate this special lady in the history of turf
For those of you at the Rowley Mile today spare a thought for Ellen
For more details of Ellen’s story, you will find a podcast recorded live at the Jockey Club rooms in Newmarket in March 2023 to celebrate International Women’s Day on The Paddock and The Pavilion’s YouTube channel.

The youngest licensed trainer in the UK, Charlie Pike, will attempt to do something even the mighty Aidan O’Brien never achieved when Padraig Dawn lines up in the first Classic of the Flat season, the £525,000 Group One Betfred 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday (May 2nd)
It took O’Brien until he was 28 to saddle the first of his 10 victories so far in the mile colts’ Classic when King Of Kings was successful in 1998. But Pike is just 25 years old and was only granted his training licence by the British Horseracing Authority in December 2025, meaning he would become the youngest trainer in living memory to win one of Britain’s five Classic races should he triumph on Saturday
Speaking on a Zoom call organised by The Jockey Club, Pike said: “There’s a great buzz around the yard this week and I haven’t really slept for the last week – I am just tossing and turning in the night!
“It’s more excitement than anything. The nerves haven’t really kicked in yet, but I’m sure they will come closer to Saturday I am blessed with my head lad, Connor Padraig Dawn is his pride and joy, so he’s up there even more than I am checking in on him.”
Asked what it will feel like to be in the parade ring alongside the likes of Aidan O’Brien and Charlie Appleby at the weekend, Pike added: “A privilege, if anything. They’re the people that everyone looks up to To be on the same field as them, I think that’s a massive privilege
“It’s definitely a pinch me moment for me It’s a Classic. Obviously, Frankel, winning the Guineas was amazing and if we got our name on list of winners it would definitely be an amazing thing.”
Padraig Dawn is a son of 2018 2000 Guineas hero Saxon Warrior and his dam, Termagant, was also a Group One winner having landed the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh in 2009 He was sold for 30,000 Guineas as foal at Tattersalls in December 2023
He became Pike’s only winner to date when successful on debut over seven furlongs at Southwell in February and then was runner-up, beaten just a neck, in the Listed Burradon Stakes over a mile at Newcastle on Good Friday
Padraig Dawn gained his placed in the 2026 Betfred 2000 Guineas when he was supplemented at a cost of £30,000 on Monday Sponsor Betfred make him a 33-1 chance for glory on Saturday and to recoup that, Padraig Dawn would need to finish in the first four.
Pike said: “After Newcastle, we mentioned it. And the more me, Gary (Gillies) and Niall (Keating) (owners) spoke about it, it did seem like a good option for him. There was no persuading or having to convince anyone Everyone was happy to go and pay the supplementary fee, so we put him in
“At Newcastle, the way the race ran was definitely not in his favour. He showed signs of being a very nice horse and I think he probably got beat out of greenness that day, as well as there being no gallop for him. But he has definitely improved off the back of that I’d like to sit in within the first four on Saturday, which I think we could be more than capable of doing. Obviously, everyone wants to win.”
Although both of Padraig Dawn’s victories have come on the All-Weather, Pike is not at all concerned about the switch to turf on Saturday
He continued: “We’ve done plenty with him at home on the grass. And to me, he seems to be more of a turf horse You have to treat the 2000 Guineas with respect, because it is a Classic at the end of the day and there are some nice horses still in there.”
In the saddle on Saturday will be 27-year-old Eddie Greatrex, who has a long-established link with the trainer. Pike said: “Eddie rides the majority of ours and if he can’t, his brother Tom will. We only occasionally see Eddie the odd time in a week He’ll come in and ride work, just because he’s so busy
“But I’ve known both the boys for years now. We used to ride out together at Richard Hannon’s so, it’s been a relationship that’s going on for a while, which I think helps. We communicate quite well We don’t sugarcoat things, because we are friends at the end of the day. And we’re both trying to achieve the same thing.”
After a brief riding career, Pike got the chance to train at just 24 years old and felt it was too good an opportunity to turn down
He said: “I stopped race riding - I didn’t have an awful lot of race rides and I was looking for the next stage in my career And it was always going to be within the racing industry
“I spoke to Gary Gillies (owner of Danebury Place Stables) for a while. Gary has a keen interest in racing, and he was happy to take me on and be my main backing to get me going, which he has done. And that’s led us to where we are now.”

The Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes Newbury

The Betfred 2000 Guineas, which was founded in 1809 and has a glittering roll of honour, celebrates its 218th running in 2026 and has a total prize fund of £525,000
Along with the Betfred 1000 Guineas, also over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, the 2000 Guineas is one of the five Betfred British Classics, all restricted to three-year-olds - the others being the Betfred Derby and Betfred Oaks, both over a mile and a half at Epsom Downs in early June, and the extended 14-furlong Betfred St Leger, which takes place at Doncaster in September.
Sir Charles Bunbury, who played an important role in the development of British racing, including overseeing the extension of The Jockey Club’s authority, was inspired to introduce the two youngest Classics - the 2000 Guineas for colts and fillies and the 1000 Guineas for fillies only The name derived quite literally from the initial prize fund for the race – 2000 Guineas was in effect a guaranteed sweepstake, irrespective of the number of subscribers
The inaugural running was won by Wizard, who gained £1,522 for his connections, in the silks of Yorkshire sportsman Christopher Wilson Bill Clift steered Wizard to that success and, five years later, completed a famous double for the same owner when partnering Charlotte to take the first running of the 1000 Guineas Both were trained by Tom Perren
The Betfred 2000 Guineas is the first Classic of the season. There have been many outstanding performances by both horses and jockeys over a distance of one mile on The Rowley Mile, which was won by Ruling Court in 2025 We take a look at the previous 10 winners of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION: The first of the Classic races that highlight the season, this one mile race for three-year-olds is also a Group 1 contest; the highest level of racing Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland, occasionally from as far away as France, Australia, South Africa or the USA due to the prestige of these historic contests. Victory in a Classic race is the ultimate pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those horses that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers at stud.

PLAY SMARTER
The Charlie Appleby stable has been the dominant force in this in recent times and that trend may continue courtesy of DISTANT STORM, who quickened up in very good style to win a 7f course Group 3 last autumn. That devastating turn of foot was missing when third (Gstaad second) in the Dewhurst but he’s taken to bounce back with a bang on his return. Unbeaten Royal Lodge winner Bow Echo is second choice ahead of Gstaad and the selection’s stablemate King’s Trail.

PLAY SMARTER
GAMRAI looked a different model on the back of being gelded when scoring at Kempton on his return and can defy a 9lb hike in the weights. Last year’s Jockey Club winner Bellum Justum kept good company last season and could prove the one to give John and Thady Gosden’s improver most to do on his handicap debut ahead of Daiquiri Bay and Hopewell Rock.

SIERRA SANDS travelled well throughout the race and left the impression that he would come on for the run when a close fourth in a similar C&D handicap at the Craven meeting. He again has the assistance of Ryan Moore and shades preference ahead of well-bred filly Nanoscience, who opened her account on the all-weather last month and brings potential to this handicap debut. StellarVision, who was just ahead ofthe selection in the aforementioned C&D handicap, also has solid claims.

At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.
We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings
But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather. Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible.
Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry.
We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.
Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.
In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times. In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings
We are always pleased to hear from our customers and are grateful for any feedback you can provide about your visit today. There are short contact forms available online at thejockeyclub.co.uk/ newmarket and we value your comments
Please keep off the track. The track is for horses, their jockeys and stable staff, please keep them and yourselves safe by remaining inside the barriers. Anyone trespassing on the track will be: Liable to arrest and prosecution; Ejected immediately; Banned from all future Newmarket race meetings; May face a nationwide racecourse ban.
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirementswhilstyouareatNewmarket Racecourses. We would request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing area and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that we do have a first aid room Should anyone require any assistance please speak to the nearest steward
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained Flash photography is not permitted anywhere in the Parade Ring or Winner’s Enclosure areas, or anywhere in the close vicinity of horses.

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prizemoney for 2026
Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
